It was great listening to Mrs. Fetter read The Mitten by Jan Brett. Here are a few activities that you might want to try at home. You can also check out Jan Brett’s website for more stories and information about the author. https://www.janbrett.com
Activity 1: Grab a mitten at home to play this activity. If your child needs to work on letter sound relationships, this will be a fun way to practice sounds and letter identification.
Have your child close his eyes while you hide one alphabet letter in the mitten.
Call out 3-4 words that begin with the letter sound. For example, if you hid the letter t, you might call the words: town, tiger, Tuesday and ten.
Ask your child to identify the sound he hears at the beginning of each of those words. Your child may need to repeat the words you said to help with this step.
Then ask, “What letter do we use to represent the /t/ sound?” Let your child answer and pull out the mystery letter from the mitten to see if he is correct.
Repeat with a different letter and continue the same sequence of steps. Have fun building phonemic awareness and letter/sound relationships with this Mystery Mitten Letter Sound game.
Activity 2: Print out the animals and mittens. Color the print outs and then cut them out. Tape the mittens together and have your child retell the story by putting each animal in the mitten.
