Sharon graduated from Clermont Northeastern High School in 1978. After graduating, Sharon went to Eastern Kentucky University where she earned a degree in Elementary Education. She served in many roles as a professional educator including as a teacher at CNE Elementary, Gifted-Student Coordinator, Director of Personnel, and Assistant Superintendent at the Clermont County Educational Service Center. While working tirelessly to educate her students, Sharon continued to learn herself earning a master's degree from Northern Kentucky University and a doctorate from the Ohio State University.
After a career that spanned over 30 Sharon retired, although her desire to serve the community only continued to grow. Sharon became active in the Clermont County chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma, a group of active and retired educators. As a member, Sharon mentored new teachers and raised money for scholarships and local community organizations. Sharon was also an active member of the CNE Cares organization and her church. Additionally, Sharon was elected to the Clermont County Educational Service Center where she continued to have a positive impact on the education of students county-wide.
We were honored to induct two alumni, Niles Light and Sharon Titus Averwater into the Clermont Northeastern Distinguished Alumnus Hall of Fame. Those who nominated Niles and Sharon described them best, so we would like to share some of their comments and stories in their own words.
Sharon earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education from Eastern Kentucky University, a Master of Arts in education from Northern Kentucky University, a Doctorate from The Ohio State University, and a Superintendent’s certificate from Xavier University.
With all these educational degrees, one would expect that she devoted her life to education, which is exactly what Dr. Sharon Titus Averwater did.
Sharon spent 36 years in education, starting as a Clermont Northeastern Elementary math teacher, later working as a gifted student coordinator, Co-Chair of Curriculum, Director of Personnel and lastly as the Assistant Superintendent for the Clermont County Educational Service Center which provides educational service to all Clermont County’s local school districts.
Sharon’s commitment to education did not end when she retired, she ran for, and waselected to, the Clermont County Board of Education where she served until her passing in January 2022.
Despite her busy career, Sharon always found time to help outside the classroom. She was active in the personal education of individual students and helped some Clermont Northeastern students secure scholarships through her work with Delta Kappa Gamma, a professional organization for women educators.
Sharon loved to bake and decorate cakes, donating them for various fundraisers. She helped distribute food to those in need through CNE Cares. And she silently lent her
ear and hand, helping a homeless family find employment and a place to call home.
Tom Averwater, the boy who once sat behind Sharon in third grade and pulled her pigtails and the man who became her husband joined us at the August 20 th All-Alumni Celebration, along with several members of the Titus and Averwater families to celebrate her legacy.
