Newman Voices
Our flagship choir is open to all students and rehearsals take place on Fridays from 10.50-11.20am in CG12. (Students are allowed to miss tutor time in order to attend). The choir performs at all school events and students who are members are invited to apply for our visit to Disneyland Paris in July 2027.
Year Bands
Our year bands are open to all students in their year group who learn a musical instrument or who enjoy singing. The rehearsals take place as follows:
Y7 - Tuesdays 10.50-11.20am in CG12
Y8 - Wednesdays 10.50-11.20am in CF12
Y9 - Wednesdays 10.50-11.20am in CG12
Y10 - Thursdays 10.50-11.20am in CG12
Y11 - Tuesdays 10.50-11.20am in CF12
Sixth Form Band - Wednesdays 2pm-4pm in CB9 (Music Academy Time)
(Students are allowed to miss tutor time in order to attend and we will register them there).
Music Tech Club
For students who want to learn how to use Garageband and Logic to record and edit their own music.
Mondays after school in CB9
String Orchestra
The string orchestra is open to all students who learn violin, viola, cello or double bass. The rehearsals take place on Wednesdays lunchtimes 1.30-2pm in CF12. We will join with brass and woodwind to make the orchestra.
In the Chapel Choir we will sing sacred music and learn how to sing in harmony and parts. The Chapel has a fantastic acoustic and it's really enjoyable to sing in. We will support school liturgies and there will be the opportunity to perform outside of school too. Students are allowed to miss tutor time to attend this choir. We will register them there.
The blues band is open to all students who sing or learn an instrument. It takes place on Fridays from 10.50-11.20am in CF12. The teacher is Mr Wall. Students are allowed to miss form time to attend.
Brass Ensemble
The brass ensemble is open to all students who learn trumpet, cornet, trombone, euphonium, tuba or french horn and is led by our trumpet teacher, Richard Baker. The rehearsals take place on Wednesdays from 1.30-2.00pm in CG12. The group joins with woodwind and string players to make the orchestra. (Students are allowed to miss tutor time in order to attend).
Sixth Form Band/Music Academy
Bands for all students in years 12-13 who play an instrument or enjoy singing. Rehearsals take place on Wednesdays from 2-4pm in CB9.
Production Band
The music department will create a small band to accompany this year's musical We Will Rock You. If you want to apply to be apart of the band then please complete this online application form by 22nd September.
Music Theory Lessons
For students who want to learn more about music theory. Students work at their own pace towards attaining grade 5 in ABRSM music theory, coached by our tutor. This club is paid for by parents and costs £50 per term (including all workbooks and exam fees) though please contact Mrs Lane: c.lane@cncs.co.uk if you need financial support. Lessons take place on Wednesday after school but you must book through Mrs Lane.
Music Theatre Club
This club is a singing group for students who want to learn musical theatre songs. It takes place on Thursdays from 10.40am-11.05am in CF12. Students can miss tutor time to attend this club and we will register them there.
Our Songwriting Club is provided by an external provider. It will take place on Thursdays from 3.15pm-4.15pm. Please contact the Brighton School of Music direct.
Students are normally taught in small groups and the lessons are paid for by the parent unless the student is entitled to Pupil Premium or Free School Meals funding.
