About us

Cardinal Newman is supporting students to achieve their equestrian goals alongside their academic goals in a friendly, knowledgeable and inclusive environment.

Our academy supports aspiring equestrians in a number of ways. For some students that will mean competing at an elite level within our Equestrian Team which will be competing in County and National competitions which include the NSEA (National Schools Equestrian Association), British Riding Club and grass roots competitions. For others it means developing their riding skills through our various training opportunities with some fantastic certified instructors at some of our BHS (British Horses Society) approved venues.

Students with their own horses

Experienced riders with access to their own horse or pony and transport can have the privilege of representing our school at prestigious NSEA inter-school equestrian competitions local to Sussex and hopefully to the annual National Championships pending qualifiers. Disciplines include Dressage, Show Jumping, Arena Eventing, One Day Events, Hunter Trials, Eventers Challenge and Grass Roots competitions.

The team has already celebrated many successful trips with several wins and qualifications for championships so far.

Riding schools lessons open to all

Riders of all levels without their own horses are welcome as members and invited to join our monthly training sessions held at one of our BHS certified venues with horses available for hire. During these training session students have access to highly qualified trainers at exclusive training days and will be able to train alongside the rest of the academy as well as a chance to compete in our summer inter school competition.

Students progress will be closely supported with regular check in and goals agreed and supported by our team captains. Riders that wish to ride more regularly will be able to access the riding venues and book into additional lessons as and when they choose.

In order to register for lessons please follow the link below and note you are a CNCS academy member. Lessons prices start from £32.00

We are also able to support students in their equestrian qualifications and career pathways with our bespoke training packages which include their sliver awards in horse care and management and their

BHS equine excellence pathway courses 1 & 2.

The BHS Groom Pathway is aimed at students looking to have a career as a professional groom. This qualification leads students towards opportunities as foundation groom, senior groom/head groom, riding centre manager, stud manager, yard manager of different disciplines or an equestrian business manager.

This course will run weekly 10am-3pm on Wednesday. The morning will be spent on yard skills and horse care practice, there will be a break for lunch. Students will need to bring a packed lunch for break. The afternoon between 1-3pm will be spent with the centre BHS coaches learning the theory and practical skills required for assessments.

College students will be able to access the same course options between 1-3pm every Wednesday during academy time.

Students will start with the silver challenge care award assessments at Lancing College Equestrian Centre, which once achieved are the equivalent of the BHS Stage 1 Care Assessment. These give the student direct entry to the BHS Stage 2 Care assessment once the student is fully prepared for assessment with a BHS Coach having signed off the key skills required. Likewise training towards the BHS Stage 2 Lunge assessment will be available.

There is also the option for students to train for their BHS level 1&2 in riding. However, this must be taken after the riders have achieved their silver award in horse care.

The BHS Professional Rider Pathway is for those wanting practical riding skills. This is especially useful for those wanting to become a professional dressage or jump rider. The stages of this pathway include riding a horse individually, understanding the scales of training for the horse, and adapting your riding to suit any horse.

Students on the pathway riding course will attend weekly from 10am-3pm. The morning will be spent on yard skills and horse care practice, there will be a break for lunch. Students will need to bring a packed lunch for break. The afternoon between 1-3pm will be spent with the centre BHS instructors learning the practical skills required for assessments.

Students can only undertake one course at a time.

Academy Racing industry trip

The Equestrian Academy were lucky enough to be invited to visit the Moore's Racing Stables last week. The Stables are set in 180 acres of beautiful countryside and woodland, Cisswood has top-class training facilities with stabling for over 150 racehorses.

Students had the privilege of meeting with the highly renowned racehorse training duo Jayne and Gary Moore. Gary started as a National Hunt jockey with over 200 career wins.  He retired from riding and is now a renowned racehorse trainer with numerous champion horses and jockeys under his wing.

The Moore children have followed in their parents’ footsteps and passion for all things equine and they have all competed in various equestrian disciplines growing up, whilst attending school here at Cardinal Newman. The Moore family were able to look back fondly on their time here at Newman with Mr Miller having taught them all!  He was able to tell a few funny stories along the way which was wonderful for the students to hear.

Jamie and Joshua Moore are both winning National Hunt jockeys and their brother Ryan Moore is a champion flat jockey with over 2,400 wins to his name. Hayley is a National Hunt jockey and a regular face within racing media as a presenter. The students were able to ask questions and receive advice about how to aspire to work in all areas of the racing industry.

We feel hugely privileged and proud as a school to have a connection with such a successful equestrian family. Cardinal Newman has in fact had over 8 winning jockeys go through the school. Colin and Mark Bolger and Ian Mongan and Robert Lucey-Butler have also done extremely well within the racing world.

The Moore’s have kindly offered to support our aspiring equestrians with offers of VIP tours of their training facilities.  They will have opportunities to meet and speak with staff and trainee jockeys working for the family and the student’s personal favourite part, being able to watch the race horses out at exercises on the gallops and meet the champions horses themselves.

Hayley Moore has a wealth of experience and is known for her support and producing of grooms and young riders and many aspiring Jockeys. Academy students will have further opportunities to do work experience and training days, watch this space!

Well done to Rider Bella for qualifying for the Elite Hickstead National championships!!! Sadly due to horse injury she was the only student able to qualify this year.

She had two wonderful rounds against 172 schools! Sadly she just missed the placings but she and her lovely Horse Remi looked great in the Newman colours and had the honour of jumping in the huge international ring. Looking forward to next year with more of the team.

Micsha was the first student to take an early BHS level one exam. fingers crossed for results day!

Bella is through to the final rounds at the Hurst College national schools finals next week at the Hickstead international show ground. Good luck Bella!
