Homework Policy and Procedures
Philosophy
Homework at Cheyenne Mountain Elementary School is an essential part of our school’s instructional program. Assignments will vary in accordance to the needs of the class and individual students and will relate to our core curriculum and classroom instruction. Homework assignments are intended to reinforce and extend learning initiated in the classroom and serve as a tool for teachers to assess student understanding of classroom instruction. Completion of routine homework can assist students in developing good work habits, while fostering initiative and responsibility. Daily homework activities and long-term assignments will be instructionally relevant and purposeful while enhancing the learning experiences of all students. The guidelines below indicate the role of the student and their parents, for the successful completion of homework.
Homework Policy Guidelines for Students
Always do your best!

Bring home the proper materials to complete the assignments
Hand in completed assignments on time
Budget time properly for long-term assignments
Complete any work missed due to absence from class (For every one day of an excused absence, students have two days to complete missed assignments.)
Understand that homework will affect your class performance
Talk to your parents and teacher if you are having difficulty with homework
Homework Policy Guidelines for Parents

Check and sign your child’s planner (3rd-6th grade) and consistently consult the teacher’s website (K-6)
Provide a time and place to do homework assignments with limited interruptions
Monitor homework completion, assist your child, but do not do the work for them
Oversee completion of long-term assignments to assist in understanding time management
Contact the teacher with questions or concerns especially if your child exceeds the allotted time frame or is having difficulty with the homework content
Understand that homework will not be assigned during school vacation except for the completion of previously assigned long-term projects and/or required reading
Homework Requests and Make Up Work Policy
If a student has been absent from school, a request for homework may be phoned in to the office or e-mailed to the teacher. Homework requested before 10:00am may be picked up in the office after dismissal that day or the following morning. Students are given a day to make up work for each day absent, plus 1 day.
Time Guidelines of Homework Assignments
While it is understood that the time it takes to complete homework assignments may vary with each child, the times below are the general guidelines for each grade level. If your child is having difficulty on a consistent basis completing assignments within the time frames established or experiencing frustration with content, please contact your child’s teacher for assistance. If a student is experiencing difficulty, parents/guardians have the option of signing off at the upper time limit for completing homework, if the student has worked studiously and has produced quality work.
