General Information

Academic Integrity: You are expected to be honest and responsible for your own schoolwork. This means that you may not copy another student’s work or allow someone to copy your work. You may not use on-line translators to write sentences or essays. You will receive no credit on any assignment that does not meet this standard.

COURSE OBJECTIVES

Students will begin to acquire communication skills (listening, speaking, reading, writing) in Spanish as well as acquiring knowledge of other cultures. Students will be able to compare their knowledge of other cultures as well as the structure of the language to their own. These are the Colorado Content Standards for World Languages. These skills will build as students move on to Spanish 1B (intermediate Spanish). After completing two years at CMJH students typically move on to Spanish 2 at CMHS in 9th grade.

SUPPLIES (ONLY NECESSARY FOR IN-SCHOOL LEARNING) If it is more convenient to purchase these now, you may do so.

Retake Policy: Students may retake quizzes only after demonstrating mastery of the material by redoing assignments and class-work leading up to the aforementioned quiz. Chapter tests may not be retaken. Students can receive full credit upon demonstration of mastery of materials assessed in quizzes.

Make-Up Work: In accordance with district policy, for any excused absence you will have the number of days absent plus one day to turn in any make up work. Please check my school website calendar for information on what you missed so that you can come prepared to the next class period. If assignments are given prior to a student’s absence and are due on the day the student is absent, he/she is required to turn in the assignment on the day he/she returns.

Late-Work: Time will be given in class to complete assignments, however most assignments will not be due on the same day as assigned. Students may complete this work at home or during Access if necessary to be turned in the following day. If students will be given digital assignments this can be completed at work or during Access in the computer lab. Work must be turned in on the due date.

Media Usage in the World Language Classroom: Using contextually rich and authentic materials in language instruction is a proven method of making the language more meaningful, applicable and understandable to the listener/learner. In so doing, I use many music videos, commercial clips, authentic leveled reading text and many other types of realia “real life” examples as possible. The materials I use are considered G or PG. Any materials considered PG-13 would require a permission slip signature.

STUDENT EXPECTATIONS: (In Classroom Learning)

Learning Spanish is fun, come to class with a positive attitude.

-        Respect your classmates, teacher and classroom environment. Be in your seat and ready to work when the bell rings.

-        Keep your cell phone and other electronic device silenced and out of sight.  School policy: All electronics that violate this policy will be sent to the office and you may pick the up after 24 hours.

-        Beginning of class: Check the lesson plan and copy down any assignments in your planner.

-        End of class: Class is not over until you are dismissed. Do not put your materials away early, line up at the door, or walk around the room.

-        Pick up any trash around you and make sure you have all of your belongings before you leave.

-        Let others learn. Every student in this class has the right to learn. NO student has the right to interrupt the learning of another student.

-        Speak as much Spanish as possible. Learning a language requires practice – use the Spanish that you have learned and know that it is okay to make mistakes.

-        Be on time and come to class with all required materials. School-wide tardy policy: You are considered tardy to class if you are not in your seat when the bell rings. On the third tardy, you will be referred to administration.
