Impact on Local Weather
Jet Stream: (air current, from west to east) The Jet Stream creates a barrier between the warm and cool air masses; colder in the north and warmer in the south
North Carolina will have warmer weather when the jet stream is above the state
North Carolina will have cooler weather when the jet stream is below the state
Gulf Stream: (water current, from south of Florida up the eastern seaboard and then across the Atlantic) moderates weather along the eastern seaboard, warming the air and land there during the cooler months
El Nino: Water in the Pacific Ocean gets warmer than usual and the flow of the jet stream is disrupted; in winter in NC it will be wetter and cooler than normal (Nino, Wetter, cooler)
La Nina: Water in the Pacific Ocean gets cooler than usual. In winter in NC, warmer and drier than average pattern (Nina, warmer, drier)
