World Language Academy Course of Study

The World Language Academy at North Mecklenburg High School is open to any student with a strong interest in world language study as long as the student meets specific district academic requirements and fulfills a number of world language class prerequisites.

At the high school Level, magnet students are integrated into the comprehensive high school experience by taking companion classes in 9th, 10th, 11th, and 12th grades complimenting the accelerated course of study in Honors, International Baccalaureate (IB) and Advanced Placement (AP) classes in the target language. Upon graduation, many former immersion students who have completed the World Language Academy course of study, will have had an average of 12 years of language study.

Students with a more limited background in a language, or beginning a new language, have the opportunity to advance to, and sometimes exceed, the AP/IB Level while completing a seven-course sequence of study. In addition, the pursuit of dual languages taken concurrently may also qualify a student for satisfactory completion of the seven-course requirement.

World Language Academy Magnet and Graduation Requirements

World Language Academy magnet students in grades 9, 10, and 12 must be enrolled in and pass two (2) world language magnet theme-related courses each year. Students in grade 11 must be enrolled in and pass one (1) world language magnet theme-related course. In order to graduate from the World Language Academy and receive a language magnet cord at graduation, students must successfully complete this seven (7) course sequence, in addition to completing other graduation requirements. Students must study their primary language through at least Level V (or IB SL/HL II). They may begin studying an additional language, if desired, after completing level III of their primary language.
