Hospitality and Tourism

This course focuses on economic impact and marketing strategies for hospitality and tourism destinations. Emphasis is on destination complexity, customer relations, economics, legal and ethical responsibilities, safety and security, and tourism promotion. English/language arts, mathematics, social studies and technology are reinforced. Work-based learning strategies appropriate include cooperative education, entrepreneurship, internship, mentorship, school-based enterprise, service learning, and job shadowing. Apprenticeship is not available for this course. DECA (an association for Marketing Education students) competitive events, community service, and leadership activities provide the opportunity to apply essential standards and workplace readiness skills through authentic experiences. The prerequisite course for this course is marketing, principles of business and finance, or sports and entertainment marketing IA. MARKETING, BUYING BEHAVIOR, AND MARKETING RESEARCH

Marketing

In this course, students develop an understanding of the processes involved from the creation to the consumption of products/services. Students develop an understanding and skills in the areas of distribution, marketing-information management, market planning, pricing, product/service management, promotion, and selling. Students develop an understanding of marketing functions applications and impact on business operations. Mathematics and social studies are reinforced. Work-based learning strategies appropriate include cooperative education, entrepreneurship, internship, mentorship, school-based enterprise, service learning, and job shadowing. DECA (an association for Marketing Education students) competitive events, community service, and leadership activities provide the opportunity to apply essential standards and workplace readiness skills through authentic experiences.

Unit 1 and 2 Marketing

Unit 1 . Understand marketing, marketing functions, marketing mix components(4ps), marketing strategies and tactics, target market identification segmentation, the need for marketing research and data and career opportunities in marketing

Unit 2 Understand product service management, branding, product life cycles, new product development, marketing of services, product positioning and the technological, legal, and ethical components of product/service management

Unit 3 and 4

Unit 3 Understand promotion and types of promotion including selling and the technological, legal, and ethical components of promotion

Unit 4 Understand pricing and factors affecting pricing decisions including technological, ethical and legal consideration

Unit 5

Unit 5 Understand safety and security and legal and ethical responsibilities at hospitality and tourism destinations.

ENTREPRENEURSHIP

Students will develop a business plan for owning and operating their own business. Financing the business, site location, advertising and selling, governmental regulations and management will be major topics of study. This class also offers DECA, a student organization, as an integral part of the marketing program. It offers students the opportunity for leadership training, community service, travel to conferences and competition in the marketing area on a district, state and national level.

Apply economic concepts when making decisions for an entrepreneurial venture.
