CMS Grading Guidelines for ELs: Student work should be graded in accordance with what they “Can Do” based on English language proficiency levels. Classroom teachers should design and modify instruction, assignments and tests based on students’ English language proficiency levels in reading, writing, listening and speaking as determined by the WIDA W-APT or ACCESS test. The WIDA Can-Do Descriptors highlight examples of what students can do at each English proficiency level. It is a grade-specific resource designed to guide teachers in planning for meaningful activities with ELLs. Report card grades should reflect these instructional and language modifications without limiting the student from earning the highest grade in the content area. Students should not receive grades of “D,” “F,” or “1” on assignments based solely on their limited English proficiency. A student could receive a “D,” “F,” or “1” only if the student’s lack of performance on appropriately modified work warrants such a grade.
ELs may receive language modifications and testing accommodations in the classroom, while being instructed with Core Curriculum State Standards on grade level. The WIDA English Language Development Standards should be used as a tool to access Core Curriculum State Standards.
IMPORTANT ADDITIONAL GRADING INFO FOR NEWCOMERS:
Based on recent guidance regarding equity of grading for English Learners, the following guidelines have been created. You will find a detailed version of the guidelines here. The most important information in this guidance is:
EL students who have been in the country 12 months or less and who have also received a composite score of 2.9 or below on the WIDA Access Test should not receive a grade lower than 70% on all assignments and assessments.
ALL EL students should receive an opportunity to be re-assessed if needed and if the re-assessment grade is higher, it will replace any initial assessment grade. Note: although the CMS grading plan states that students cannot receive above an 80% on a re-assessment, English Learner students should not be limited from receiving top grades in a class even with amplified assignments; therefore, the re-assessment grade for English Learners is not capped at 80%.
Re-assessment opportunities for all English Learners may be in an alternative format to maximize student success; for example, project-based assessments, portfolios, student conferences, etc. More options are listed in the linked guidance above.
Please complete the separate setting request form for English learners (located on Ardrey Kell Teachers Canvas page) at least 24 hours in advance. We are teaching too, and can't always provide a separate setting. We need time to make alternate arrangements for the student if necessary.
When you fill out the Google form, please include anything we should know about the test. For example, may the student use his/her notes? A calculator? A formula sheet? Your website? Does the student need a code to access the test? What is it? Are there any specific requirements or instructions you want us to carry out?
Please write your name on the test AND answer document. Place testing materials in the ML Testing Bin on the counter in the teachers' mailroom.
We keep a folder of completed work in the ESL office, and at the end of the day we return the work in teachers' mailboxes.
Finally, here is some important information we’d like you to know about ESL Separate Settings:
We do not give students the answers to questions. However, we do try to clarify the meaning of questions and answer choices if students don't understand them and request our help. For novice-level students who are allowed to use their notes, we may also help them to find the relevant section of their notes.
If students do not finish their tests during the block, we give them additional time when they have our classes (if applicable). This is why you may not always get the test back on the same day. If you have a concern about this, please discuss it with us via email, prior to the testing period.
