Course Description:
Earth Science is a study of the planet Earth, including physical properties, structure, and development. The formal discipline of Earth sciences include the study of the atmosphere, lithosphere, hydrosphere, exosphere and biosphere, Typically Earth scientists will use tools from physics, chemistry, biology, chronology and mathematics to build a quantitative understanding of how the Earth system works and how it evolved to its current state.
THE EVER-INTERACTING SYSTEMS OF EARTH
EXOSPHERE - sun, stars, galaxies, nebulas, black holes, meteors, comets, Big Bang
LITHOSPHERE - rocks, earthquakes, volcanoes, plate tectonics, earth layers
HYDROSPHERE - rivers, wetlands, groundwater, glaciers, ocean currents, springs
ATMOSPHERE - storms, jet stream, ozone layer, smog, humidity, winds, air pressure
BIOSPHERE - biomes, human interaction with environment and Earth’s resources
Course Standards:
EEn.1.1 Explain the Earth’s role as a body in space.
EEn.2.1 Explain how processes and forces affect the lithosphere.
EEn.2.2 Understand how human influences impact the lithosphere.
EEn.2.3 Explain the structure and processes within the hydrosphere.
EEn.2.4 Evaluate how humans use water.
EEn.2.5 Understand the structure of and processes within our atmosphere.
EEn.2.6 Analyzes patterns of global climate change over time.
EEn.2.7 Explain how the lithosphere, hydrosphere and atmosphere individually and collectively affect the biosphere.
EEn.2.8 Evaluate human behaviors in terms of how likely they are to ensure the ability to live sustainably on Earth.

Academic Honesty
All staff and students at Hough are expected to conduct themselves with integrity. Cheating, in any form, will not be tolerated. All students involved will receive a zero for the work. Cheating includes, but is not limited to, copying someone else’s work and turning it in as your own, looking at someone else’s paper during a test, even if you do not write anything down, talking about anything at all with another student during a test, even asking for a pencil. Taking photos of test items with cell phones cameras, or otherwise copying test materials, whether or not they are ever shared with others is considered cheating.
From the Hough High School Honor Code:
The Hough High School honor code is the following:Each student is honor-bound to refrain from cheating, lying or misrepresenting the truth, and stealing.
- Cheating: Cheating is giving, receiving, or attempting to give or receive unauthorized help that could result in an unfair advantage in completing work. The student is to assume that all work is to be done individually unless the teacher specifies that collaboration is acceptable. Cheating includes plagiarism. Plagiarism is the action of presenting others’ work, words, or ideas as their own. All Hough High students are expected to turn in their own work.
Examples of cheating may include, but not be limited to:
- Copying information or answers from someone else’s work, homework, projects, reports, essays, quizzes or test papers.
- Allowing others to copy your work or doing their work for them, i.e. giving another student your homework to copy.
- Giving or taking assistance of any kind while taking a quiz or test. This includes talking or gesturing during the examination period.
- Using unauthorized aids such as cheat sheets, translation devices, notes, books, formulas or information in calculators or computers or via any internet source. Having any of these aids or any technology device out during a test or quiz without permission will be considered a violation.
- Discussing a quiz or test with someone who has not taken the quiz or test.
- Direct copying of key phrases from another source.
- Direct copying of key phrases from another source with minor adjustments such as changing verb tense or word order.
- Using another person’s ideas or arguments without proper citation.
- Stealing: Stealing is the taking of anything without the expressed consent of the owner.
Examples of stealing may include, but not be limited to:
- Stealing copies of tests or quizzes.
- Stealing another student’s homework, notes or notebook.
Assessment Practices:
Assessment will mainly consist of multiple choice test questions and constructed response questions. Students will be responsible for all information that has been presented since the beginning of the semester on each test. Assignments not turned in and tests not taken will be counted as “0.” Extra Credit will not be allowed.
Students who fail to make up an assessment after 10 days will receive a maximum score of 60 unless there is medical documentation and approved by admin.
Attendance:
Students are required to attend class regularly. Hough has a 10 day policy - Any student who misses more than 10 days of one class will be required to complete recovery. Students who do not complete recovery will fail the course.
Make-up Work:
Students are expected to make up any missed work due to any absence from class. It is the responsibility of the student to contact the teacher before or after class to discuss any assignments or schedule make up work. Make-up work is to be completed outside of class time. Students have five school days to return all make-up work for full credit when absent.
Late Assignments:
Assignments done in class are due before you leave class. Overnight assignments are due at the beginning of the next class period. Students will be responsible for turning in assignments on time. Work that is received after the day and time it is due is considered late. Students will receive a maximum score of 80 for assignments turned in one day late, 60 for assignments turned in two days late and 50 turned in thereafter.
Retest Policy:
Students who score less than 79% will have the opportunity to retest after completing an intervention/reteaching. The maximum score on a retest is an 79%. Retests must be taken within two weeks of the original test date. The second test grade will be recorded even if the first grade was higher.
Students must complete all homework for the unit before taking a retest.
Grading Policy:
Grades will be calculated as follows:
Formal - 70% (Exams, Tests, Projects)
Informal - 30% (Class work, Homework, Quizzes, Labs)
Grading Scale:
A - 90-100
B - 80-89
C - 70-79
D - 60-69
F - 59 and below
Honors Earth Science: Honor students will be required to complete projects. These projects will be determined by the teacher and may include presentations, written papers, or investigations. Students will also be required to purchase an assigned novel (Age of Miracles).
