AVID is a program that promotes the best teaching practices to develop consistency in thinking, processing, and delivering information by both students and teachers.

Mission: To close the achievement gap by preparing all students for college readiness and success in a global society
AVID, which stands for Advancement Via Individual Determination, is a college readiness program designed to help students develop the skills they need to be successful in college. The program places special emphasis on growing writing, critical thinking, teamwork, organization and reading skills. It was originally designed for disadvantaged high students in San Diego. With the success of the program it spread throughout the country. It then moved down into Middle school and now into Elementary. Reedy Creek is piloting the program with 8 classes where teachers received training in the summer. Our goal is to continue training other teachers and take it school wide over the next few years. Our focus this year is on organizational binders and three column focus notes. Teacher will also work on time management skills. All of these foundational skills are necessary for academic success.

Reedy Creek's Gifted Program (AIG) program is based on the catalyst model. The AIG teacher brings the expertise of gifted education and the understanding of best practices and applies it to the classroom. The AIG teacher works, collaborates and consults with classroom teachers to best serve our students. For advanced students in grades 1-5 have two classrooms with a focus on accelerated instruction and rigor, with the AIG teacher co teaching with the classroom teacher, consulting with students and pulling small groups for special projects and book studies. Instruction is flexible and differentiated to meet the needs of all students.
In First grade we are working on being creative inventors through many different STEM activities., such as group building challenges. Our overall goal is to create a product that isn't currently available and then create a plan to market it. Our next project will be to create informational science board sharing information from research we did on the Sun, Moon, Stars and the earth.
In Second grade we will be focusing on creative writing. We will be engaged in many creative writing activities to stir up the creativity within all of us. We will also be introduced to the generalization Change and learn to relate it to our studies. We are also studying the novel Frindle, by Andrew Clement. This book is about a student who makes up a new word which stirs up lots of problems in his school and especially his language arts teacher. We are learning to dive deeper into characters personalities and studying hidden themes. Our next novel will be Lunch Money. It's a battle of two students trying to outsmart and outwit each other with creative ways to make money.
In Third grade we will be focusing on creative writing and taking our generalization Change from second grade and moving to the next level in third grade relating it what we are learning in third. We are currently studying the novel The One and Only Ivan . This is about a gorilla who is held captive and his evolving relationships with the other animals in captivity. We will later on study the novel Holes. This is a story about a boy who was wrongly accused of a crime and has to spend time in a camp for juvenile offenders. We are working on projects such as embellished letter home to mom and we are also creating survival guides for new campers.
In Fourth grade we are diving deep into character study. Our generalizations focus for this year is Systems. Throughout the year we will relate systems to all aspects of learning and knowledge. We will then study the novel City of Ember which explores a community which is housed underground. We are learning about the many challenges the community faces.
In Fifth grade we are learning about Structure as our Generalizations, topic the focus for this year. We will be in training to lead discussion groups and will be training our minds to conduct an academic debate. With skills being taught in analytical and critical thinking we'll be well prepared for research into finding solutions to real world problems. We have been studying famous Black Americans and Americans with disabilities.

Hello, My name is Mr. Felker and I have been an AIG teacher since 2011. I have been a teacher in North Carolina for 31 years. I worked as a AIG teacher for the past 18 years, including my time at Idlewild Elementary. My goal is to ensure that all students receive the highest quality instruction possible. My personal interests include running, biking and hiking and exploring new places or settling down into a great adventure book. I enjoy spending time with friends, family and my three rescue dogs, Rudy (terrier mix), Winnie (terrier mix) and Bruno (Chihuahua) . I've enjoyed working with the students at Reedy Creek and always look forward to working with students each and everyday.
