Students are expected to be confident readers of music on DAY ONE, as musical literacy will be the foundation for thorough understanding of the topics covered in the course. Students will develop a nuanced understanding of MELODY, HARMONY, FORM, TEXTURE, and RHYTHM – the “INNER WORKINGS” of WESTERN MUSIC. While knowledge and skills acquired in AP Music Theory will be applicable to many genres of music, the course places emphasis on COMPOSITIONAL PRACTICES of Eighteenth and early Nineteenth century European composers; an artistic era known as the “COMMON PRACTICE PERIOD.” Composers of this period include BACH, HAYDN, MOZART, BEETHOVEN, SCHUBERT, SCHUMANN, MENDELSOHN, and CHOPIN. This course meets for NINETY MINUTES every other day. The course has TWO major components: AURAL SKILLS and WRITTEN THEORY.
