Nightly Assignments…

Students will have homework every night, Monday - Thursday. Please look for the following to come home with your child daily:

  • Agenda– This is an organization and communication tool. Each day it will be the student’s responsibility to copy their nightly homework assignments into their agenda. I will check student agendas daily and add notes as needed. Please check and sign the daily agenda nightly.

  • Night Book– For homework, students are required to read for a minimum of 20 minutes nightly. After reading, students should write 2 – 3 sentences in their Night Book in response to the story. Attached to the inside cover of the Night Book is a list of “sentence starters” for those times that your child cannot think of what to write. They should refer to this list of prompts to help them decide how to respond to their reading.

  • Math and Reading– Daily Math homework will be sent home. Please return it by Friday. Reading comprehension worksheets may be sent home on Monday’s and are not expected to be returned until Friday’s.

The student’s Agenda and Night Book should go home daily and returned to school the next morning.

Communication…

Email or Class Dojo is the best way to reach me throughout the day! I will send home weekly emails to let you know of important things coming up.

I must receive written notification for any changes in your child’s afternoon transportation. Without verification from a parent, your child will go home by their usual means of transportation. Students may not be signed out after 2:15 pm.

Monday Folders are sent home each week with graded or checked assignments. You may keep the papers and return the folder only on Tuesday. Finally, Class Dojo, (an online communication tool) will be used to share special events, units of study, and other information particular to our school and class.

Ways to help at home

-Review papers in weekly folder with your child. This will allow them time to see and correct errors in their class work.

-Check Agenda for notes and be sure your child is completing all nightly homework. If reading independently, make sure your child is reading books on his/her reading level.

-Read aloud to your child to model fluent, expressive reading and to expose them to higher level books.

-Practice basic addition and subtraction facts nightly. Flashcards work great for this and students can make their own using index cards. Let me know if you need index cards—I will gladly provide them if needed!

-Play board games or do puzzles together. Such “old fashioned” entertainment requires thinking, strategy and problem solving skills!

-Volunteer! If you would like to volunteer for field trips, CMS requires a level 4 clearance. Go to the following website, or ask for information in the office. https://www.cmsvolunteers.com/volunteer.php?newflag=1.
