Objective: Be able to explain some of the important concepts that we will study this year in 6th grade social studies and understand how to construct the vocabulary foldables.
Brief Video Instructions for lesson 1
Assignment 1: Construct Social Studies Subject Page on the first page.
Step 1: Take a ruler and go up a third of the page. Then from that line You need to write your name, then social studies, and then whatever block you have. Could be Block 1,2,3 or 4. The writing needs to be neat, colorful, and legible.
Step 2: Underneath that orginal line take a ruler and seperate the rest of the paper in four boxes. You are going to pick one of the four topics we cover and put each in a box. You shoud include title and colorful representation. You can use your chromebook to look up topics to give you visual ideas. If you use search engine you can change to images and they should give you a lot of ideas.

Geography, culture, government, economics, history, Paleolithic era, Neolithic era, Ice age, Latitude, Longitude, Mesopotamia, Religion, Ancient India, Ancient China, Ancient Japan, Middle Ages, Indus River Valley, Ancient Egypt, Ancient Greece, Ancient Rome, The Mongols, Ancient Africa, The Aztecs, The Incas, The Mayans, The Renaissance.

Assignment 2: Historical Figure Instructions
Pick one of the following historical figures at the top of the page make a creative neat way to write his name. On the top of the page should be his name and you can either print out a picture of him/her or draw a colorful picture of the historical figure. (Should go in middle of page) If you print out a picture in black and white, make sure you go back and take a colored pencil to the picture to make it colorful and neat. Then underneath write a famous quote from that figure in quotation marks.

Assignment 3: How to do vocabulary words for Mr. LaGrange
Time Permitting start on vocabulary words
You have a vocabulary definition provided for you. There are 30 words in Unit 1. In the last section of your five subject notebook you will make that a vocabulary section. Starting on page 1 you will make your first vocabulary foldable page. Fold the page to the red line and them make 4-5 evenly spaced flaps. On the front flap goes the term on top with illustration below. Then on the inside of the flap is the definition. The term and definition must be in pen and illustration in colored pencil. An example is shown below.

Friday August 24th
Objective: Be able to explain and understand the 5 themes of social studies and how to explain and elaborate based on specific examples of each.
Assignment 1: Take Cornell notes on the slideshow of 5 branches of social studies. You will set up Cornell Notes as shown in the videos on the Cornell notes tab. Please look at example and watch at least two of the videos . All notes on the slideshow will go on the right side and then you need to develop questions based on your notes. At the end of the notes do a summary of all the notes you took on 5 branches of social studies.

Group Assignment 2: 5 Branches of Social Studies (partner only table partner of 2) Should have 2 worksheets titled " 5 Branches of Social Studies"
Mrs. Connor will give you worksheets and read each summary of each standard. Then work with partners on slides 9-13 and figure out where the examples go on your worksheet and do visual for each.
Homework: Work on vocabulary words Unit 1
Tuesday/Wednesday August 29th/30th
Objective: Explain how human and physical characteristics impacted migration and settlement in various regions in Africa, Asia, Europe and the Americas.
Warmup: (In notebook) Write as much as you can in complete sentences. Title the top of your page Continents & Oceans Warmup.
Warm Up: Question 1: What is a Continent?
Question 2: What makes living by water advantageous for civilizations? Why do you think early civilizations were located near bodies of water?
Question 3: Using the numbers & letters provided, label the continents & oceans to the best of your ability
Assignment 1: With the two worksheets that are guided notes. Using the slideshow fill out the two worksheets guided by Mrs. Connor. At the end of the guided notes make sure you complete. The reflection question and then place in your notebook.

Activity 2: Complete both map activity worksheets and make sure they are colored, neat, and labeled.
Directions: Students will work in partners or groups to complete a map identifying continents & oceans. Complete both worksheets and put in notebook.
Your notes and slideshow should help you complete these.
Activity 3: Students will work with their partner and play an interactive game using their notes & map.
