Breaking News! The first Congress of MPHS has been chosen!
Each student is assigned alphabetically by last name.
The House has 81% of the class population, and the Senate 19%
54.4% of the House membership is Democrat, while 45.6% is Republican
47% of the Senate membership is Democrat, while 53% is Republican
Each class Congress must:
First, we must choose whether we are creating a law for the United States, or for Myers Park High School. Which would be easier? Why?
Elect leadership - Speaker, Majority, Minority, Whips (at least... we can discuss other positions if needed)
Create committees - Standing, Select/Special and Joint, and appoint committee leadership
Each committee must craft a bill and work with the leadership to see if it can pass the committee and go up for debate.
Leadership determines whether bills that pass their respective committees can be put up for debate and/or revision. In other words, the leadership has to set the docket (a list of bills up for debate and/or vote).
The bill is debated and voted upon.
Once the bill passes one house, it has to be sent to the other house for debate and passage... AND then we will discuss further.
Turn in hard copy of bills that your group proposed. In addition, you must write a reflection on what part you played in the passage of the bill. To reflect means to think deeply and carefully, so I want to see what you thought about the process and your bill(s). Did you think it was going to pass? Why or why not? What was your interest in the bill? What were others interests? Were you equally dissatisfied?
GOOD LUCK!
