In the beginning levels of any language, the students are expected to perform at a level that exemplifies their proficiency. This does not mean perfection. This means that students are consistently able to meet certain goals. For level 1 students, they are expected to perform at a novice high level of proficiency. For level 2 students, they are expected to perform at an Intermediate low level of proficiency. These levels and their markers are given to us by the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages. This is the national council that sets our guidelines the same as you might find in any class at South or any high school. For more information, or to see what markers I am looking for from you or your child, please visit:

We will follow CMS as well as SMHS guidelines for grading procedures. This means that about 70% of your grade comes from formal assignments, and the other 30% comes from informal assignments. Formal grades include tests, projects, quizzes, and your exams (midterm and final). Informal grades include classwork practices, homework, notebooks, daily checks for understanding.
Late work will also follow the policies. Please see your students handbook for more information.
Please be sure that you are aware of the expectations as outlined in your contract. All magnet students are expected to take and pass a language class to the AP level as well as any other magnet classes they choose to take. They are also expected to adhere to any CMS/ SMHS behavior guidelines.
