Most prepare and rehearse assignments are in class completion grades with verbal feedback. This means that over 50% of the quarter grades are based on in class effort. If all assignments are completed on time they will pass the course.

Visual Arts Grade Designation Guide

A: The student is highly self-motivated, uses problem solving skills, and works independently as much as possible. The student is a risk taker and an original thinker. The student completes all assignments according to the guidelines given. The student uses teacher feedback to improve his work. The student completes all assignments by the deadline, often spending time outside of class. The student’s artwork demonstrates a great understanding of the skills and techniques taught in the lesson. The student seems to be working to maximum ability.

B: The student is motivated and enthusiastic. The student usually takes risks and makes an effort to be creative and original. The student completes all assignments according to the guidelines given. The student uses teacher feedback to improve his work. The student completes all assignments by the deadline, spending time outside of class when necessary. The student’s artwork demonstrates an understanding of the skills and techniques taught in the lesson. The student’s artwork is consistently above average.

C: The student does satisfactory work, but it is felt that better work should be expected. The student is sometimes reluctant to take risks and occasionally draws upon other’s ideas more than his own. Selected work habits (completing assignments on time, following directions, staying on tasks) may need some attention. The student uses most teacher feedback to improve his work. The student’s artwork demonstrates a basic understanding of the skills and techniques taught in the lesson. The student’s artwork is consistently at standard.

D: The student is rarely motivated and seldom works without teacher redirection. The student is usually reluctant to take risks and tends to draw heavily upon other’s ideas instead of his own. The student makes a minimal effort to follow the guidelines given for each project. The student rarely uses teacher feedback to improve his work. The student turns in many late or incomplete assignments. The student’s artwork demonstrates little understanding of the skills and techniques taught in the lesson. The student’s artwork is consistently below standard.

F: The student is not motivated and will not work without constant teacher intervention. The student makes a minimal effort to follow the guidelines given for each project. The student refuses to use teacher feedback to improve his work. The student’s assignments are usually late, missing or incomplete. The student’s artwork demonstrates little or no understanding of the skills and techniques taught in the lesson. The student’s artwork is consistently well below standard.

RUBRIC STRUCTURE

Formal projects will be graded based on the following criteria (each of these categories will be discussed in class with project specific rubrics to assist students in achieving their goals):

1. Effort and use of class time

2. Unified Composition and Design

3. Creativity and Original Solutions

4. Craftsmanship and Technique

5. Followed Format/Overall accomplishment

Each area of the rubric will be scored on a 6 point scale where:

5-6.0=A or well above average

4-4.9=B or above average

3-3.9=C or average

2-2.9=D or below average

0-1.9=F or well below average.

LATE/INCOMPLETE WORK


All late work must be submitted through Canvas.

Work that is not submitted correctly will be considered late.


Prepare and Rehearse assignments

Late assignments will be accepted for a grade until one week (5 school days) after the “Perform” date or the submission cut off for the quarter whichever comes first.

Late penalties of 5 points per day (unless absent) will be deducted for late work.

Assignments submitted up to one week after the “Perform” date will receive a 50% . All parts of the assignment must be completed with reasonable effort to receive credit.


Performance assignments

5 day grace period/Work submitted after this time will lose 5 points per day.

Assignments will be accepted without penalty until one week (5 school days) after the “Perform” date or the submission cut off for the quarter whichever comes first.


Retest Policy

Perform projects can be retaken for up to an 80. Must be taken within three weeks of the original project due date or end of quarter.


Absences

Students are required to take missed assessments (prepare/rehearse) the first day they return from being out. Students who refuse to take assessment at the assigned make up time lose the opportunity.

Students who miss more than 10 days of class must complete recovery or receive an F in class regardless of their grade. For each absence over 10 students will complete a 4-step written critique of an artwork using the template provided from the department. 1 critique = 1 class.
