Math 3

Math 3 is the third course in the integrated high school mathematics sequence, typically taken by students in the tenth or eleventh grade. It builds on the foundations of NC Math 1 and NC Math 2, delving into more complex algebraic concepts, exploring different types of functions and extending geometric and statistical topics. 

Core curriculum topics

NC Math 3 includes advanced study in algebra, geometry, and statistics.

Algebra and functions: 

• Polynomial functions: Students study polynomial functions, including how to perform operations with them, graph them, and find their zeros.

• Rational functions: The course covers the operations, graphing, and applications of rational expressions and functions.

• Exponential and logarithmic functions: Students extend their understanding of exponential functions and learn about their inverse counterparts, logarithmic functions.

• Trigonometric functions: NC Math 3 introduces the unit circle and extends trigonometric ratios to trigonometric functions like sine and cosine.

• Function transformations: Students analyze how changes to a function's equation affect its graph and other key features. 

Geometry:

• Circles: The curriculum includes theorems about circles, including relationships between chords, secants, and tangents.

• Conic sections: Students learn to derive the equation of a circle using the Pythagorean Theorem.

• Modeling with geometry: Geometric concepts are applied to solve real-world design and optimization problems involving area and volume. 

Statistics and probability:

• Statistical studies: The course covers the design of sample surveys, experiments, and observational studies, including the role of randomization.

• Statistical inference: Using simulation, students learn how to make inferences about a population from a sample. 

NC Math 3 EOC test

Similar to NC Math 1, NC Math 3 includes a state-mandated End-of-Course (EOC) test that measures student proficiency in the course's standards. 

• Assessment weight: The EOC test counts for at least 20% of a student's final course grade.

• Test format: The online test consists of multiple-choice, numeric-entry, and technology-enhanced item types.

• Calculator policy: The NC Math 3 EOC test is a "calculator-active" exam, meaning a graphing calculator is permitted throughout.

• Graduation requirement: Passing NC Math 3 is a mandatory step toward meeting the state's four-course math requirement for high school graduation.
