College Applications and Admissions
HOW TO CHOOSE A COLLEGE
Using the SuperMatch tool in Naviance is a great way to start your college search. You select criteria that you want in a college and it will generate a list (with links to tons of information) of colleges that fit what you're looking for.
Begin with a range of choice, a range of selectivity, a range of options. Then you’re able to make informed choices as that list becomes a little smaller — perhaps because you’ve done even deeper research, or perhaps you’ve started visiting campuses — that list will ultimately become a manageable list of schools to which you’ll ultimately apply. Then you’ll be in a really strong place because you’ll have a range of choices.
You should have a foundation school, one where you are highly probable to be admitted. And then think about, what’s a mid-range school? A school that it’s highly likely — not a guarantee, but highly likely — you’ll be admitted. And then we all have the “reach” schools on our list. You know, these are the ones that — as we consider our own personal profile and we examine the first-year profile of that class — it’s a reach that you might be admitted.
The National Association for College Admissions Counseling is a website with numerous resources for prepping and applying to college. Here's is their guide to the college admissions process.
APPLYING AS A MIDDLE COLLEGE STUDENT
Wondering whether you apply as a first-year/freshman student or as a transfer student?
If you will not be completing an associate's degree before you graduate from the Middle College, or are applying to a college outside of North Carolina or a private college in North Carolina, you will be required to apply as a freshman or first-year student.
If you will complete an associate's degree, you have the option of being evaluated as either a transfer student or a first-year/freshman student for colleges within the UNC System. The application process and requirements vary by college- check at each school to see how they recommend you apply. Remember, being evaluated as a transfer student does not necessarily mean you go in as a transfer student. You may still enroll as a freshman and be held to freshman requirements for housing, orientation, registration, etc.
Here's a list that provides links to each college in the UNC system admissions policies for Cooperative Innovative High School (Middle College) students:

Transcripts
High School Transcripts- Request high school transcripts through Naviance (see the Naviance page for directions).
CPCC Transcripts- Requests for official CPCC transcripts need to be made through your MyCollege account. There is a fee. Most colleges do not require you to submit official CPCC transcripts for admissions purposes if applying as a freshman. You will need to if applying as a transfer.
Below are lists of colleges that have confirmed whether you need to send a CPCC transcript or not. If your college is not listed, check with them.

North Carolina Residency Determination Service (RDS)
All UNC system schools require students to complete the Residency Determination Service as part of their college application. This is used to confirm whether students are North Carolina residents and qualify for in-state tuition. After completing the application, students will be given a Residency Certification Number (RCN) that they will enter into all applications for colleges in the UNC system.
Test Scores
Official ACT scores can be requested through your ACT account
Official SAT scores can be requested through your CollegeBoard account
*Check to see if you can self-report scores before paying for offical copies.
Teacher Letters of Recommendation
If your college requires/accepts teacher recommendations, you must request these through Naviance. Harper MCHS teachers are already in Naviance. If using a CPCC instructor or a teacher from another CMS school, email Mr. Crutchfield the instructor's name and email address and I will add them to Naviance (let them know to expect an email from Naviance). Do NOT request letters of recommendation through Common App- this will mess up a lot of things for your applications. Also, ask your teachers if they will write a recommendation for you before selecting them in Naviance, and allow at least 2 weeks.
See the Naviance page of my website for directions on how to request letters of recommendation.
For LMCHS teacher recommendations, please complete the Teacher Brag Sheet to help with their letters.
Counselor Recommendation
To request a counselor recommendation, please complete the Request for Recommendation and return it to me at least two weeks before the recommendation is due (this is helpful to give to teacher recommenders too).
COLLEGE ACCEPTANCE DATA
Colleges usually publish the data (average or midrange ACT, SAT, GPA, etc.) of the students they accept. It's helpful to check this to get an idea of your chances of being accepted.
