You are cordially invited to join the first ever HMM Family Book Club!
The first book selection (and hopefully not the last!) is Wishtree by Katherine Applegate. Some of your children may be familiar with Wishtree, as HMM did a whole school read of this book in January of 2020. A wonderful thing about this book is that it is perfect for readers of ALL AGES!
Participants will be provided with a copy of the book, a suggested reading calendar and list of brief "big idea" questions for family discussions.
The book club kicks off the week of October 6 and will conclude with a special family book club event at HMM on November 20.
Why?
Reading together as a family has numerous benefits.
-Encourages a lifelong love of reading and learning -Strengthens family bonds
-Fosters empathy and emotional intelligence
-Strengthens cognitive development
-Enhances concentration and focus
-Develops critical thinking
-Improves language and vocabulary skills
-IT'S JUST PLAIN FUN!
When?
Reading starts the week of October 6 and is broken up into 6 weeks.
On Thursday, November 20 HMM book clubbers will celebrate all things Wishtree at a special HMM Family Book Club event. Look forward to interactive discussions with friends, fun activities and creative projects all inspired by the book. This celebration will offer families the chance to connect over literature, share insights and strengthen the home-HMM partnership through the joy of reading!
How?
Most importantly: do what works for your family!
You can read a bit every day or read it all on the weekends.
Parents read aloud or take turns with your kids.
Use an audiobook while driving to school or activities. It's available from public libraries on Libby or Sora. (Check CMS, CML and NC Kids Level Up)
Stop and talk while you read or don't
Use the guided focus questions for family discussions or skip them!
