Class overview
This course explores movement as a creative art form. Students learn basic choreographic principles, structures and processes. Movement skills and performance values are studied. Students analyze dance and explore connections in history, to other arts disciplines, and to health. Students will begin to self assess their dance based on established criteria.

Meet Ms. Gibson
Ms. Gibson is originally from Mt. Holly, NC. She graduated from East Gaston High School in 2004 where she was a member of the Dancing Warriors dance team. She graduated from Lenoir-Rhyne College, where she was a member of the cheerleading team, in 2008 with a degree in Elementary Education. Ms. Gibson later received her Master’s in Education from Appalachian State University in 2012. Ms. Anyea was the 2017 Hickory Public School’s Mathematics Teacher of the Year and the 2020-2021 Hickory Public School’s Teacher of the Year.
Ms. Gibson danced for fifteen years and competed all across the United States for 9 of those years. She began dancing at the age of 2½ at Dance Connection in Mt. Holly, NC. She later moved to Rhythm in Effect, now called Studio 73, in Huntersville, NC. Ms. Gibson was awarded the Key to the City of Mt. Holly in 2003 for her outstanding work during her reign as Teen Miss Mt. Holly. She was also a Carolina Princess in the 2004 Miss North Carolina Pageant.
Ms. Gibson currently works at Hickory Ballet Academy located in Hickory, NC where she teaches students from age 3 to 70. She has won numerous choreography and entertainment awards throughout her dance teaching career. Ms. Gibson has choreographed for several musicals which include: The Color Purple, Evita, 9 to 5, and Memphis. She also teaches dance at her church Hartzell Memorial United Methodist Church and was the head coach of the Lenoir Rhyne Dance Team from 2018-2020. Along with the head cheerleading coach, she led the LRU Spirit team to their very first NCA National Championship in school history. Ms. Anyea was inducted into the Nu Chapter of the Delta Kappa Gamma Society International for Women Educators in 2022. Anyea became a member of Carolina Dance Masters Chapter #15 in 2017.
