Tips for AP Computer Science

  1. Understand the expectations: AP courses more closely resemble college classes than they do high school offerings. It is important that you are prepared to work from the first day of class. While other courses may ease into their schedules, AP classes must address a lengthy curriculum in a compressed period of time. Prepare mentally for this reality.

  2. Complete your work each day: This applies to both in-class assignments and homework. AP courses are fast-paced, and you may be unable to catch up if you do not remain current with your work.

  3. Pay attention, and take thorough notes every day. Review your notes after class to clarify concepts and identify areas of confusion. Do not miss a homework assignment. If you must be absent, touch base with your teacher. The class will not slow down for you.

  4. Study for all tests: Although AP courses are designed with the AP exam as their primary focus, this does not mean that you can avoid studying for regular tests in the class. Regardless of whether you sit for and succeed on the AP exam, you will receive a grade in the course. Don't risk a low mark on your transcript. In addition, reviewing for each test will aid you immensely when it comes time to study for the AP exam. You cannot cram for the AP, as there is simply too much material. You should think of unit tests as signposts, and consider the time you spend reviewing for them as time spent studying for the AP exam at the end of the year. You will thank yourself later.

Advice from former students

  • While the class may seem easy, it is important to understand the different concepts rather than just memorize their definitions.

  • Do the work, and if you don't understand something ask questions

  • Just do the classwork. I have friends in other classes that struggle just because they don't do their work but I usually finish all the classwork and homework in class and I've done great this year.

  • Make sure that you are organized and have a strong work ethic. It is important to stay focused and concentrate on your learning, in order to do well in this course.

  • Don't be stressed and enjoy because it's a creative course.

  • Be present, physically and mentally. The most important thing for the class is that you need to be here. Sometimes you might have to use some sort of resource to revise or clarify something, do it. Resources such as Quizlet flashcards are really important.
