According to NC DPI: “Student chronic absence refers to missing so much school, for any type of absence—excused, unexcused, disciplinary—that a student is at risk of falling behind.”

Completing high school on time—meaning graduating in four years or less—is critical for student success. Do your part to make your attendance a priority here at West Charlotte.

Over 8 million U.S. students miss nearly a month of school each year.

When students improve their attendance rates, they improve their academic prospects and chances of graduating.

Research shows that missing 10 percent of the school, or about 18 days in most school districts, negatively affects a student’s academic performance. That’s just two days a month and that’s known as chronic absence.

Attendance improves when schools engage students and parents in positive ways and when schools provide mentors for chronically absent students.

Absenteeism in the first month of school can predict poor attendance throughout the school year.

For all racial/ethnic groups, male students are more likely to be chronically absent than female students.
