The Department of Teacher-Leadership continues to extend the reach and impact of high-performing teachers in Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools each year.
There were 99 applicants in the first talent pool in 2014 and 323 applicants in the sixth talent pool in 2019! We had a 76.49% acceptance rate for the 2020 talent pool, with applicants from places as far as California, Florida, New Jersey, and Virginia.
Accepted candidates include 46.7% who hold a Master's degree, 14.3% who are National Board Certified Teachers, and 9.3% who hold both a Master’s degree and are National Board Certified Teachers. In addition, candidates average 9 years of experience in the education field!
During the 2018-19 school year, 58.06% of participating schools exceeded EVAAS student growth standards with an additional 29.03% meeting student growth. Proportionally, 14.91% more teacher-leader schools are meeting or exceeding student growth standards as compared to non teacher-leader schools.
The graph below highlights the different staffing models by position at each participating school in CMS. Principals have the ability to design a customized plan, hiring teacher-leaders in various roles to best suit the needs of their school.
In the 2019-2020 academic year, 58 Teacher-Leader Pathway schools staffed 55 MCLs that supported and coached 242 teachers!

Our goal is for more schools to participate each year until all schools in the district have the opportunity to offer teacher-leader roles and advanced pay to excellent teachers.
With an increase in schools, more teacher-leaders are hired and reach more students with excellent instruction and coach more teachers towards excellence!
