Literacy and Social Studies

*General literacy information: This year, students will learn specific skills in informational text, literary text, and vocabulary recognition and application. A large part of the 5th grade reading EOG (End of Grade) is using context clues to identify the meaning of a word in the text. Because of this, vocabulary will be studied daily through word work.

*Reading- We will assess students on their reading levels at the beginning of the year. In class, students will read in their "book band." This means that students may read one level below, at, or above their reading level. This will be one data point, in addition to reading MAP scores, and common assessments in class. Students will be placed into guided reading groups (small groups) where specific needs will be identified and addressed.

*Word Work- Students will be studying Greek and Latin roots, as this is what they have been exposed to in MAP testing, and aligns with 5th grade literacy objectives.

*Writing- We will be going through many writing cycles this year. This includes narrative writing, research based writing, persuasive writing, and writing memoirs. The writing process will be used for each cycle (drafting, editing, revising). Writing will be graded with a rubric.

*Reading Homework- Students should read at least 30 minutes a night. Studies show that reading consistently at home will increase stamina and help to develop reading skills and practices!
