Syllabus

Course Overview:


Students will analyze the historical foundations and democratic principles that continue to shape North Carolina and the United States. This analysis will begin with a brief overview of major events preceding the foundation of the United States and focus on the Revolutionary Era to contemporary times. Students will evaluate how political, social, economic and geographic factors impact society over time. Through analysis and evaluation of the North Carolina Essential Standards, students will gain an understanding of our democratic republic and develop skills to become responsible and engaged citizens.

Supplies you will need:


2-reams of copy paper (optional)

2-boxes of tissues

2-hand sanitizers

1-2" three ring binder

1-package of tab dividers for binder

3-packets of notebook paper. College rule preferred

1-package of 5"x 8" notecards



Class Requirements:

  • Be prepared daily with your notebook, binder, paper, and pens.
  • Be on time to class.
  • Be in your seat when the final bell rings
  • Be respectful to your teacher, your peers, and yourself.
  • Be responsible.
  • You are dismissed by your teacher, not by the bell.


Guidelines for Turning in Assignments:

  • Full heading: Name, class period, and date will appear on all work in the upper left side of the paper.
  • Cover sheets should be included on all essays.
  • Handwritten papers must be legible and written in blue or black ink.
  • Typed papers should use 12-point font, Times New Roman font, and be double spaced.
  • All sources must be properly cited.


Make-up Policy

  • Make-up work will only be given with a written excuse from a doctor, parent, or guardian.
  • Students have 2 days after an absence to request make-up work.
  • Students should request make-up work before or after school.


Late Work:

  • 10 points will be deducted from the final grade of late essays and assignments for each day late.


Grading Scale:

  • 45% Class work/Informal Assessments.
    • Warm-ups, notebook checks, pop quizzes, etc.


  • 45% Formal Assessments.
    • Tests, major quizzes, projects.


  • 10% Homework.

Homework:

  • Homework will include various assignments, some of which will include reading, written exercises, projects, presentations, and studying for tests and quizzes.
