Satellites for Navigation
Resource Person: Dr. Rajesh Gopal,
Department of Physics
Date: 25 September 2025
In this club session, participants learned how navigation satellite systems such as GPS, GLONASS, Galileo, and NavIC enable receivers to determine their latitude, longitude, altitude, and time by processing timestamped signals from multiple satellites. Each satellite transmits its position and time, allowing the receiver to measure signal travel time and calculate a “pseudorange.” Using the principle of trilateration, the receiver computes its position by finding the intersection of imaginary spheres (or circles in 2D) centered on the satellites. Since the receiver’s clock is less accurate than the satellites’ atomic clocks, a fourth satellite is used to correct timing errors. The session also covered common error sources—such as atmospheric delays, multipath effects, and clock inaccuracies—and discussed how modern systems apply correction techniques to improve positioning accuracy.
