The Background

Economic development is an indispensable aspect of international trading systems. Economic development is calculated as proportionate to international trade. Free-er the trade, the better will be the development of the state has long been the neoliberal argument. The normative structure governing international trade are unilateral measures, bilateral, plurilateral and multilateral arrangements. The dispute settlement body, by implementation and interpretations of the trade rules, has further deepened the regulatory control over trade. The dominant neoliberal normativity, however, has raised questions concerning underlying trade politics, trade topics, the dominance of actors, and the process of dispute settlement to name a few. Not only has WTO regulation on every aspect of trade triggered discontent but also, its growing engagements with non-trade issues have been very controversial. The RTA/FTAs have been rightly described as a ‘Spaghetti bowl’ as they run parallel to the global regime being counter-productive in promoting favourable treatments among state parties. India along with Brazil has been voicing the concerns of the developing countries as compliance towards WTO’s obligation has raised conjectures as its actions towards domestic food security, subsidies, minimum support price, Covid-19 treatment, the import tax on certain ICT products, and taxing foreign corporations have been treated as trade distortions by WTO members raising discontent and giving way to dispute resolution.

This conference is intended to bring together and provide a platform for a scholarly debate among academicians, lawyers, experts, policymakers and students regarding the emerging ideas and recent developments in international trade law
