Guidelines:

• 2 measure excerpt in common time

• All pitches will be wihin a major scale 

• Start and End on Tonic 

• A combination of stepwise patterns and intervals that fall within a I, IV, V 

• Within an octave ascending or descending from tonic

• Made up of the following as notes or rests: whole notes, half notes, dotted half notes, dotted quarter notes, eighth notes (a grouping of 2, individually preceded by a dotted quarter note, or following a quarter note (as a syncopation), sixteenth notes (only as a group of four) 

Two measures will be played twice through with a pause in between each listening. Students will then hear a count in and repeat the two measure phrase a cappella. 

Students will receive a score for pitch and rhythm accuracy. Current aural recall is worth 8 points- 1 point per correctly recalled beat. Students may hum/sing/vocalise and practice along with the second listening.

Students are encouraged to perform the rhythmic sight-reading on any syllables of their choosing, and only spoken rhythms can be scored.

• 4 measures long.

• in common time.

• in a major key.

• completely diatonic.

• beginning and ending on the tonic.

• mostly stepwise.

Additional features may include: 

• skips within the I chord and/or skip within the V chord 

• can include:  eighth notes, one rest, one dotted quarter note and/or a tie across a barline
