At Oakland, we are in the process of updating our behavior management program. I will send home information soon!
In our classroom, we will say our Class Promise each day. It aligns with our school OWLS matrix. We will focus on four areas:
-Own Our Actions-Be Kind
-Work Hard Together-Do Our Best
-Listen to Learn-Raise our hand to speak or leave our seat
-Stay Safe
We will always offer warnings and grace, but repeated negative behaviors will result in mandatory reflection time, calls home, detailed notes home, or office referrals. We do not tolerate negative behaviors such as back talk, not following directions after several reminders, being unkind, hurting another student, defiance, etc. Severe behaviors such as refusing to obey adult authority, hitting, fighting, or being physically violent, use of obscene language or gesture, or the willful destruction of property will result in a parent phone call and an office referral. These expectations will be discussed with your student. Please discuss them at home as well.
Calming Corner
If a student needs a break to calm themselves down, they will be allowed to do so in our calming corner. This is a cozy area in the room for students to sit and use calming items to assist in self-regulation. At times, a student may be asked to go to the calming corner. This does not mean that they are going to time out or that they are in trouble. It simply means that the teacher can see they need some space. This may be because a student is feeling sad, embarrassed, anxious, angry, etc.
Behavior System
Earning Hoot Loot
Students will earn points on our classroom rocket scoreboard for making positive choices, following our OWLS expectations, working hard, being kind, and showing safe and responsible behavior.
When a student reaches 10 points, they will receive 10 punches on their hoot loot punch card which equals a Hoot Loot dollar! They will continue collecting Hoot Loot to use toward rewards. Students may also receive a hoot loot dollar sporadically for amazing choices from myself and other staff!
What Happens When We Make a "Hoot-Oops"?
Everyone has moments when they make a choice they need to work on—including adults! When a student needs reminders or redirection, I will help them reflect, reset, and try again.
If your child has a particularly difficult day and receives 3 behavior redirections, I will send a "Hoot-Oops" message so you know what happened and can help us talk with your child about making better choices.
The message will include the specific behaviors or incidents from that day. This is not meant to be a punishment, but simply a way for us to communicate and work together to help your child be successful.
Treasure Box Fridays
Students who did not receive more than 2 Hoot-Opps will get to visit the treasure box on Friday!
Weekly Snapshot
Students will come home on Fridays with a weekly snapshot of areas they soared in and areas they had a hard time with.
Every day is a fresh start, and we will always have another opportunity to make great choices!🦉
Thank you for your continued support and for partnering with me to make this a wonderful year!
P.S. More information on rewards will come out soon!
