Due to growth in the county, the City Board of Education approved the building of a new school. The school was completed on August 7, 1952, and was named in honor of Mr. Norman F. Smith, who for many years was Chairman of the City Board of Education and devoted his life to public education. In 1991, the school was completely renovated and a new classroom wing was added. In 1996, with over fifty percent of its student population on free and reduced lunch, our school became a School-wide Title 1 school.
Today, there are classrooms for pre-kindergarten through fifth grade. We also have a media center, cafeteria, gymnasium, art class, music class, career readiness class, a speech classroom, 2 CDC (Comprehensive Development Class), Hearing Impaired services, 2 ESL teacher, 5 resource teachers, 2 School Counselor offices, a Centerstone office, and an Academic Coach.
At the start of the 2024-2025 school year, through the Military's "Adopt-a-School" program, Norman Smith Elementary School was adopted by Fort Campbell's Sabalauski Air Assault School.
Throughout our year together, soldiers have come into the school to grow relationships with our students during the school day. They have helped greet students and help them out of their cars in the morning, spoken with them during their lunch time, played with students during their recess times and participated in classroom events.
Norman Smith Elementary School is highly dedicated to our students. We routinely schedule fun events for our students both during school and after school.
We have several academic supports in place for our students including built in small group times throughout our day, Response To Intervention (RTI), before and after school tutoring, Special Education teachers who push-in to classrooms throughout the day to meet the needs of our students, and English Language Learners' teachers who pull students out to provide additional supports and lessons for them as they learn the English language and build proficiency.
