How Do I Refer My Child?

How do I find out if my child is eligible?

Parents may request an evaluation under the Individuals with Disabilities Act (IDEA) by contacting the school. The school may also be concerned about how your child is learning and developing. If the school refers your child for an evaluation, they will request a meeting to discuss the areas in need of assessment. The school will request your consent before to evaluate your child. Once you provide that consent, the evaluation timeline is 60 calendar days.

The school is not required to evaluate your child because your request only. The school may not determine the need for an evaluation based on available data and/or progress. In this case, the school may decline to evaluate your child by notifying you through a Prior Written Notice (PWN). They will also provide a copy of the Procedural Safeguards, which describe the steps parents can take to appeal a school system’s decision. (See Useful Documents to access a copy of the Procedural Safeguards).
