Pam Whitfield and CHS Softball

Coach Pam Whitfield started the CHS Softball program in 1980 and the first official games were recorded in 1981.   During her 30 year tenure, she led CHS to 5 district titles, and 8 regional bids.   CHS became just the second team from Montgomery County to win a regional game, which happened in 1990.   1988 was a huge year for the program as the team went through the regular season undefeated, and won its first 17 games in a row.

In just the 2nd year of district play, in 1982 CHS won its first district title by beating Northwest 17-10.   The season ended 4 days later in a regional loss to Gallatin.

1986 marked the beginning of 5 years of dominance by CHS Softball.   Coach Whitfield guided the program during this time to 4 consecutive district titles and 5 consecutive regional berths.   1986 brought a 2nd place finish and a trip to regionals. More success came in 1987 with a Regular Season Championship and another trip to Regionals. 1988 proved to be something special,  CHS won their first 17 games in a row, not losing until they faced Dickson County in the Championship finals of the winners bracket.    Undaunted, Pam's squad played the "if" game immediately after the loss and crushed Dickson 18-7 to win the district title.   1989 brought another district title and another regional berth.   1990 would be the last year of the 5 year dominance.   A fourth consecutive district title would bring the CHS total to 5 District Championships, and a 5th consecutive regional bid would bring the CHS total to 6.   But this regional trip would be historical.   The 3-2 first round victory over Hendersonville would be the Wildcats' first regional win, and only the 2nd for a Montgomery County team.   The season would end in a 2nd round loss to defending State Champion Brentwood.

A return to regionals would come in 2005 and 2006 with 2nd place finishes in the district and first round losses to Beech and Mount Juliet. Pam retired after the 2008 season having led her program to 5 district titles and 8 regional berths.

Brian Rush and CHS Softball

After assisting Coach Whitfield for 3 seasons, Brian Rush took over the program beginning in 2009. In 2012 the Lady Wildcats won the District 10AAA Championship for the first time since 1990. The team outscored their opponents 16 to 1 capture the tournament. Their season ended the following week with a loss to Mt. Juliet in the regional playoffs.

The program reached new heights in 2013, earning a trip to the state tournament. In a record setting year, the Wildcats won 38 games and repeated as District Champions. They advanced to substates for the 1st time and defeated Ravenwood 4-1 in a 10 inning game. Competing for the 1st time in the state tournament, the team won 3 games to finish 3rd in the state.

In 2014 the team won a 3rd straight district title, fighting back to beat Northeast in the "if" game. At regionals, the team beat Beech 6-0 to earn a return trip to sectionals where the team fell to Dickson Co. The following year, in 2015, the Wildcats again advanced to the regionals with a 2nd place finish in the district.

New milestones were reached in 2016 as the Wildcats captured the District, Region, and Sectional Championships on their way to a 2nd trip to the State Championships. The team finished 4th in the state and tied the school wins record with 38 wins. In 2017 the team earned a share of the Regular Season Title and in 2018 the team won the Regular Season Title outright, advancing both years into tournament play. 2019 proved to be a record breaking year. The team won the District Regular Season and Tournament Titles on their way to a school record 39 wins and just 2 losses. Team records we set for runs scored per game (9.9), runs allowed per game (1.4) and home runs in a season (44).

The team began the 2020 season with high expectations, but the season was cancelled after the first week of games due to the coronavirus.  In 2021, the team was led by 8 seniors and went on a remarkable run, going 39-3-1 while winning the District Regular Season and Tournament Titles.  After finishing as the Region Runner ups, the team fell at Sectionals to end the season 1 game short of reaching States.

It was in 2022 where the team made history.  After winning the Queen City Classic and spending most of the season ranked #1 in the midstate, the team finished 2nd in the district and 2nd in the region.  A 2-1 win over Arlington sent the Wildcats to the State Tournament for the 3rd time in school history.  At States, the team defeated both Daniel Boone and Wilson Central to advance to the winners bracket final.  A loss to Farragut set up a rematch with Daniel Boone which Clarksville won 7-2 to advance to the Championship Game.  Defending State Champion Farragut won the game 4-0 and the Clarksville Wildcats finished the season as State Runner-ups.
