About

Our History

“To serve as an entertaining, yet informative and useful school-run media outlet in order to promote school spirit and unite the community in an approachable and interesting manner.” That is the mission of this magazine. Over the summer of 2020, while we were all locked down at home, our school faculty and administration spent countless days figuring out how they were going to make distance learning effective for every student and teacher in the Colegio Maya community. To do this, it was necessary for them to achieve some sort of balance between academics and fun; obviously, they couldn’t have us resume our sports seasons so they came up with a different solution. This is when club periods were implemented to allow students to explore some of their other interests, passions, and projects through a less formal schedule and class type. This is where the idea of a school magazine was born.

That is when The Spear was born. Way back in August 2020 a few students and two teacher advisors, Ms. Day and Ms. Rumford began meeting every Wednesday to write, discuss, and envision a concept for our school magazine. We soon came up with the name The Spear, inspired by our school mascot, the Maya Warrior. Since our initial meetings, we have gained and lost members as well as gained and lost teacher advisors. Currently, our team members are myself (Jose), Addie, Teohan, Rodrigo, Grey, and Seung Min.

It was only in February that we had finally decided what type of magazine we wanted to be and what exactly we wanted to do. We want to create content for students that is partially related to our school community, but also content that brings awareness to relevant world issues. Moreover, we want The Spear to serve as a platform for students to share their writing, art, and opinions. Our first issue centered around the theme of change, our second on women, our third on the environment, and our fourth on the Class of 2021.

All of that being said, we at The Spear truly hope you enjoy our publications. Please contact us if you have any questions (about us, the magazine, our future, etc.) or if you are interested in joining or having a piece published in next month’s community features section. Even if you would like to offer some constructive criticism, that would be greatly appreciated. We, as Maya students, have been taught to constantly strive for improvement; after all, this magazine has the purpose of serving the whole Maya community, and hopefully promote school spirit and community engagement.
