Each year in Florida, thousands of acres of wild land (and many homes) are destroyed by fires that can start from a variety of causes - at any time of the year. Adding to the fire hazard is the growing number of people living in new communities built in areas that were once wild. I photographed the emergence of the new growing with the old.

A plastic bag is caught on the upper branches, brought in by the high tide. Poor recycling facilities lead to plastics being dumped into the rivers which leads to their accumulation in the sea and oceans – affecting the wildlife when ingested or trapped, littering river banks and coastal areas, and breaking down into microplastics and plastic leachates.

Fires are frequent where this photo was taken, but the fire-blackened trees photographed here are well-adapted to survive fire. They regenerate by regrowing from epicormic buds and lignotubers after bushfire – as seen in the foreground with these native red bloodwood trees (Corymbia gummifera).

The black and white tones match the melancholy mood of this lone tree and heavy clouds. The stones on the shore and the exposed roots of the tree in this frame, gave me a new perspective of this tree – barely, yet strongly surviving in its environment.

Deadvlei translates as 'dead marsh' and is a clay pan characterized by eerie, dead Vachellia erioloba (camel thorn) trees contrasted against the red hues of the dunes. The pan was formed when the Tsauchab River flooded and the abundance of water allowed the trees to grow. However, the climate changed and the sand dunes encroached on the pan, blocking the river from reaching the area.

In late October 2019, heavy rainfall led to dramatic flooding at the Shugborough Estate in Staffordshire; leaving a beautiful but submerged paradise. Although the flooding created pretty pictures; the real-life impact in the surrounding area and the country at the time, isolated people and damaged homes and businesses due to the ever-increasing effects of climate change.
