High School Basics
The school year is divided in to 2 semesters of 18 weeks each.
Each semester is composed of 2 quarters, or terms, of 9 weeks each.
Progress reports will be distributed after the 9th week of the semester and final grades will be distributed after the 18th week of the semester.
One credit (1) is awarded upon the satisfactory completion of each course during a semester.
A student must meet all graduation requirements, which include earning 43 credits and the minimum number of credits in each content area identified in the Graduation Pathway Requirements page.
Students must meet state pathway requirements for graduation.
Grading Scale
95-100 = A 90-94 = A- 87-89 = B+ 84-86 = B 80-83 = B- 77-79 = C+
74-76 = C 70-73 = C- 67-69 = D+ 64-66 = D 60-63 = D- 59-0 = F
Incompletes
Occasionally, because of illness, accidents, family issues or other hardships, it becomes necessary to receive an incomplete on the report card. For a student to receive an incomplete, the school counselor and teacher must be informed of the reason before the grades are due, and then all missed work shall be completed within 5 SCHOOL DAYS after the student returns to school. Failure of a student to report a reason for not completing course requirements or not completing requirements in the allotted five school days shall result in a grade of “zero” on the incomplete work. There shall be no incompletes given at the end of the school year except through the approval of the principal. It is the students’ responsibility to complete requirements and to keep teachers informed of their current status. With rare exceptions, final exams are compulsory and an integral part of the class requirements.
REPEATING A COURSE/CREDIT RECOVERY POLICY
Any failed course that is a diploma requirement must be retaken in person or online through Edmentu. Courses will be scheduled during summer school and/or built into students’ schedules during the following semester/school year. Students may choose to repeat any course in which they have received a D+, D, D-, F. See the Edmentum Handbook for the complete online course policy.
Class of 2025-2026 – When retaking a course, the original failed course will remain on the student’s transcript and be averaged with the new passing course.
Class of 2027 and beyond – When retaking a course, once the course is repeated, the initial grade will be changed to “R” (which designates a repeated course) on the transcript and will not count in the cumulative GPA. Only the second grade will count in the cumulative GPA because the initial credit will have been removed. Should the grade for the repeated course be lower than the initial grade, that grade will be changed to an “R”.
A student may repeat a lower level of the same course (providing the academic standards are the same for the two courses). For example, a student who earns a D+ in English 10 Honors may opt to take English 10 for a higher grade and replace the D+ with an R.
PRE-HIGH SCHOOL CREDIT
It is the policy of the Cloverdale Community School Corporation to issue high school credit for high school courses successfully completed at pre-high school grade levels provided:
The instructional materials used are those required by Indiana Textbook Code (IC 20-10. 1-9-7).
For each credit issued, the amount of teacher contact time will be equivalent to that of the equivalent high school course(s).
The course(s) is taught by a teacher with documented competency to teach the course(s).
It is indicated on the student’s transcript that the course(s) was completed prior to grade nine.
The student’s participation in the course(s) is evaluated under the same criteria as equivalent course(s) is evaluated at the high school level.
PE CREDITS – WAIVERS AND CREDIT LIMITS
Two physical education credits, PE I and PE II, are required for diploma completion and must be completed by the end of the sophomore year. PE I and PE II can be taken through the classroom at CHS, through Edmentum, and/or through a PE waiver. The waiver can be earned through active completion in an entire season of designated CHS sports and physical extracurricular activities found on the PE waiver form. If a student is going to earn a credit through a waiver, the completed PE waiver form must be turned in to the guidance office no later than two weeks following the end of the season. Beginning with the class of 2023, the same sport or activity can be used twice (one per season) to earn either a PE I or PE II credit. A student may earn an additional PE I or II credit by completing a different sport or activity (i.e. PE I credit earned through football and PE II credit earned through baseball). Elective PE credits are limited to a total of eight credits during the four years of high school. Elective PE credits do not substitute for PE I or PE II.
GPA SCALE
Cloverdale’s grading periods are nine weeks long. The two grading periods represent 80% of the final semester grade. The semester exam equals 20% of the final semester grade. Points for grades are:
A = 4.00 A- = 3.667 B+ = 3.334 B = 3.00 B- = 2.667 C+ = 2.334
C = 2.00 C- = 1.667 D+ = 1.334 D = 1.00 D- = .667 F = 0
Weighted Grades
Class of 2024-2026 – Advanced Placement and Dual Credit courses are weighted on a 5.0 GPA scale. Advanced Placement and Dual Credit courses are noted in the course descriptions section of this document.
Class of 2027 and beyond – Cloverdale High School has adopted a cumulative GPA weighting system. In this system of weighting courses, points are added to the cumulative GPA. The weighted cumulative GPA is then used to determine class rank. Because Dual Credit, and Advanced Placement courses do not have the same level of difficulty, it was determined there would be multiple levels of weighted courses. Any dual credit class (Ivy Tech level) will be weighted at .5 point towards GPA. Any AP or ACP course is weighted at 1 point. Students must earn a C- or higher in the course in order for it to be weighted.
Testing Information
ILEARN Biology
All Biology students take the ILEARN assessment at the completion of the course. Learn more on Indiana's ILEARN website here.
PSAT/NMSQT
All Sophomores take the PSAT during the fall semester. Juniors have the option to take it for the chance to qualify for national merit scholarships. Learn more on College Board's website for the PSAT here.
SAT
All Juniors participate in the SAT School Day administration during the Spring semester. The SAT is a graduation qualifying option for the postsecondary readiness competencies requirement. Free SAT Bootcamp for Students -- Schoolhouse.world from Khan Academy is offering free online tutoring for students taking the SAT in November and December.
What are the SAT Bootcamps? The Schoolhouse.world SAT Bootcamps are a four-week long tutoring series and research study to help students prepare for the upcoming SAT. Sessions take place twice a week (75 minutes per session) and students have the flexibility to select the dates and times that best fit their schedule based on the bootcamps available.
What is covered? Students will learn from a certified peer tutor in a cohort of up to 10 other students throughout the bootcamp. During sessions, students will practice multiple full length SAT practice tests and get personalized support for the most challenging questions and concepts.
When will they be held? Bootcamps consist of two sessions per week.
Why should students participate? This free tutoring opportunity has proven highly effective, and students who participated experienced a 90+ average score across both sections. Students have reported an increase in content understanding and testing confidence (hear directly from participants, Setareh and Kavish).
