“Keep your face to the sunshine and you cannot see a shadow.” ― Helen Keller
Dear Parents/Carers,
We hope you had a lovely weekend!
Doves and Kingfishers started the week off with an exciting PE lesson where they were practising jumping from gym equipment and landing on a mat with two feet. The children started from a lower platform and progressed onto jumping off of a higher platform. They even used their phonic skills to sound out and blend as they jumped!
On Tuesday, Kestrels class were using their senses to support them in describing a setting. They focused on the jungle setting from the film 'Up' and worked in pairs and groups to describe what they could see. After participating discussions with their friends, they constructed their own noun phrases to describe what they could see. What amazing young writers you are becoming!
On Wednesday, we celebrated our Stars of the Week in our weekly celebration assembly for their hard work in lessons and demonstrating our school values. This is always the favourite assembly each week and the staff love celebrating the many successes from the children. Eagles also used the computers to plan a newspaper report. It was wonderful for them to demonstrate their computing skills.
On Thursday, Finches continued with their orienteering sessions and learnt how to use a key on a map. They all concentrated really well and used their improved communication skills to collect the correct equipment. Year 6 worked on their inference skills in reading and developed their answers by adding evidence from the text to back up their answers. Also, a letter was sent out to all parents regarding staffing updates at Maundene - please ensure you take time to read it and let the school office know if you did not get it so that we can send it to you again.
Year 1 welcomed parents in to read with them on Friday - the children especially enjoy these activities and it is lovely to see so many parents joining us for these events. Building up relationships with our Maundene family is so important and we are pleased to be able to still offer these events.
Have a wonderful weekend,
Miss Capes, Mrs Jackson and the Maundene Team
Learning Snapshots
Year 3 - French lesson
Woodpeckers loved participating in 'Madame Cornell's Test Rapide'. Miss Cornell tested their vocabulary knowledge of classroom objects and the children had so much fun!
Ospreys - Science lesson
Ospreys are loving science this term. They are investigating how light reflects off of objects into our eyes, which allows us to see.
Stars of the Week
Every week we celebrate our stars of the week who have worked extremely hard and applied our values or character skills consistently. We are so proud of them and know you will be too!

Key Messages
Earrings
A gentle reminder that children should only be wearing small studs for school and not wearing hooped earrings. On PE days, your child's earrings must be taken out or covered up.
Cold Weather
Due to the weather turning cold and wet, please ensure your child has appropriate clothing and make sure everything is named/labelled.
'Sensory Fiddle Toys'
Please could you ensure that your children are not bringing poppets into school. If your child needs a ‘sensory fiddle toy’ then it will be provided by their class teacher or SENCo – Mrs Jackson. Sensory Fiddle Toys are used to improve children’s focus and the use of them is monitored to ensure they are not a distraction.
Masks and Lateral Flows
Currently we have minimal Covid-19 cases across the school, therefore to continue to protect our Maundene Community as much as possible, please can you ensure when attending school events you are doing lateral flows and wearing masks as you enter the school. (Unless you are exempt) The school is unable to provide masks so please ensure you bring your own.
We are monitoring cases in school very closely and putting in place any extra measures, such as virtual assemblies, virtual staff meetings, etc to continue to keep everyone as safe as possible.
Baby Congratulations
Huge congratulations to Miss Shannon on the safe arrival of baby Logan - we all look forward to meeting him very soon.
Attendance
Thank you to everyone for ensuring children attend school as much as possible despite being in covid times. Please can we ask that you inform the school via phone or email if they are unwell and also let us know the reason why. The government have set a target of 96% attendance and this is what we are still aiming for.
Office Staffing News
Congratulations to Mrs Hartnup in our office on her promotion to Medway Administration Manager and she will be working across all three Medway schools. Mrs Osment has also gained promotion to Adminstration Officer and will be taking on some of the roles Mrs Hartnup currently completes.
Further congratulations go to Mrs Hartnup who is pregnant and will become a mummy in May! We look forward to welcoming Baby Hartnup very soon.

Tweet of the week!
Year 3 & 4
This week, the 'tweet of the week' is celebrating the poetry workshop that Year 3 and 4 had. The children thoroughly enjoyed this experience and even had the opportunity to write their own poems!
