Math
Expectations: Every week there will be a specific math strategy or concept to practice at home.
Strategy of the Week
September 8 -12
Counting to 100 by 1's 2's 5's & 10's
September 15 - 19 (Addition Strategies begin -See green sheet in Homework folder for further explanation & addition facts)
Count on 1,2,3 - 4 + 2= start at the biggest number and count on 2 more numbers......4, 5, 6. The answer 4 + 2= 6.
September 22 - 26
Count on 1,2,3 & 0 - Review last week strategy and now add 0 - 4 + 0 = the number does not change. 4 + 0 =4
September 29 - October 4 - Remembering your Doubles is essential, as they are important to all addition & subtraction strategies.
Doubles - For example, 1+1=2, 2+2=4
October 6 - 10
DOUBLES + 1 - Remember your doubles and add 1 more
For example , 8+7= think 7+7 is 14 and add
1 more.
5 + 6= think 5 + 5 = 10 and add 1 more
October 14-17
Almost Neighbors - Think about your doubles and numbers that are almost neighbors. For example, 5 & 7, 6 & 8, 1 & 3.
5+7= think about the number which comes between 5 and 7 - 6. Then double it for your answer. 12
5+7=12 (think 6 and double it)
4+6=10 (think 5 and double it)
October 20 -24
Turnarounds - If you know all previous facts, like 6+8=14 then you know 8+6=14. Turn the addends around and same answer.
October 27 -30
Making 10 - 7 + 5 =, take 7 thik about how many more to make 10 - 3 so 7+3 =10 then add 2 more.
7+5=12
November 3rd-14th
Review all addition facts
November 17th-21st
Subtraction
Counting Back- When subtracting 1,2,or 3, start with the bigger number and count back.
For example, 12-3=____ (12....11, 10, 9) so 12-3=9
November 24th - 28th
Subtracting 0 - When subtracting 0 the number stays the same.
For example, 7-0=7
December 1st - 5th
Subtracting Doubles - Knowing your addition doubles is very important to subtracting doubles.
For example, 4-2=2, 6-3=3
Also subtracting when you see double numbers.
For example, 8-8=0
December 8th - 12th
Counting Up - When subtracting, start at the small number (say the number) then count up to the biggest number for your answer.
For example, 15-9=say 9 count on 10 11 12 13 14 15 so the answer is 6.
15-9=6
January 26th - February 13th - All Addition and Subtraction facts
Practice mixed signs
For example : 4 + 3 = 6 - 5 = 12 + 5 = 7 - 2 =
