Class overview
We are a wonderful group of well rounded learners who are curious about the world around us. We delight in asking questions and wondering why things unfold as they do! We are polite, empathetic, and supportive of one another. Our classroom is our home away from home! Check in on us every month and see what we are learning! Here's what we are up to now!
In Language Arts this month ( October ) we are reading lots of things especially Kevin Henkes books. He uses thought bubbles, repetition, and bold print. As writers we are writing Memorable Moments stories and trying out these craft moves in our own writing just like Kevin Henkes!! We study sight words, write sentences and have mini quizzes every Friday.
In Math, we are representing numbers to 100. We are representing them concretely with blocks and minuplitives, pictorially with pictures and drawings, and symbolically with numerals and charts. We are practicing our estimating, counting and adding skills. My students should be able to tell you if a number is odd or even and be able to use ordinal numbers (up to tenth place). That's a lot of math for little brains but they are doing it!!
In Science we are studying Life Science - Animal Growth and Changes. We have studied life cycles of a plant, a butterfly, a frog, and will be doing humans and talking about ourselves soon. Have a peek at our study of the life cycle of a plant!
For Social Studies we are completing a unit on Change and its effects on individuals, the lives of individuals, groups, communities, and the future. This month we have discussed how our lives have changed just since we have started school. We have looked at how to make good decisions, and how some decisions are individual, some are made by a group, an organization, a school, the law, and the government. We brainstormed how we can be instruments of change and how we could start a letter writing campaign.
As we study Health, we are concerned with Relationship Choices. We are studying how to make good decisions, how to express feelings, how to deal with friendships, how to express needs and ask for support in a healthy way. We are reading mentor texts, drawing and writing about our feelings.
In Art we are talking about creating artwork using the elements of line, shape, form, space, texture and colors. So far we have been exploring many types of lines and drew pictures that included at least three kinds of lines. Each student has created a portfolio. We have produced some Thanksgiving and Fall themed art recently with great results. The children are very creative and express themselves well artistically!
Computer time is in the schedule and we are getting familiar with signing in and using our username and password. We are playing math games and soon will be logging on to google classroom checking how to navigate it well.
DEAR time is a time of day the children really love. It stands for Drop Everything And Read. It gives the children some uninterrupted tme to sit with books and read, to practice their skills or just for the love and enjoyment of books. It is in our daily schedule for at least 30 minutes.
Take a look at our study of the life cycle of a plant. First the seed, then the sprout, next the slightly bigger sprout, then an itty bitty plant! No flower or fruit stage yet! Stay tuned!
They grew...!!!
...and grew!!!! Now they are all plants but two!
Flower and fruit are coming!
This is us, 2B on a sunny morning in October, 2020!
About me
I only thought about being a teacher after my father died when I was seventeen. Before he passed, I was planning on becoming an investigative journalist! Funny how life turns out! I stayed on PEI to help my Mom after my father died and never regretted my teaching career. I've met wonderful people, made fantastic memories and enjoy my job. Most importantly, I've helped many, many young people every year set the foundation for the rest of their lives. What investigative journalist could do that?

EBLIreads.com is really worth signing up for! You receive free lessons to help your child read and spell. It is research based, makes sense and works! Children can work at their own pace and because the lessons are recorded you can pause them and carry on when your child is ready again. You can watch them over and over! Lalilo.com is wonderful as well with great graphics and colors, kids will be engaged for hours. IXL.com is great for math and can help students with topics such as ten frames and base ten blocks that we are currently studying. It is set up like a game and students can "play" on their own with lots of feedback from the site. Really worth checking out! Storyonline.net has many story books listed and read by professional actors. This site will not only entertain children with a great story but it will help them with their fluency and expression to hear reading done well. Great site! That's all for now but more sites next time!
