Helper of the Day:
Each day we have a "Helper of the Day" who does jobs for the teacher, sits on the bench with a friend at carpet time, leads our class line, and helps to make some choices through the day (movement break song, book for a read aloud, etc).
Homework:
Your children work very hard during the school day! With our curricular expectations, there is less time for play-based learning than there was in kindergarten. Aside from reading, we won’t be assigning specific homework for your child this school year. We hope they use their time at home to play, develop their oral language, social skills and fine/gross motor skills!
Our “Homework Bags” are more of a “Communication Bag”. Please send this bag to school each day. If you have a note for me, please send it in your child’s homework bag and tell your child to let me know! Any work or information sheets will be sent home in this bag.
Reading Homework: Each Monday, your child will bring home four books for the week. Some of these books will be familiar and others may be new. Reading homework shouldn’t take more than 10-15 minutes. We encourage you to develop a nightly reading routine that works for your family. Here are some suggestions:
Have your child read you one book each day of the week
You read a page, they read a page
Read together
You read and make mistakes for your child to find
You read a page (or a chunk) and they echo read
Read to your child each day - ask your child to find specific letters/words on the page, discuss what’s happening in the story (problem/solution/characters)
We won’t begin homework until the first week of October. This will give us time to practice books, learn good reading habits, begin guided reading lessons and develop our independent reading skills.
Lunches:
Help your child identify what parts of their lunch are for snack and what items are for lunch so they aren’t eating all of their food at snack time!
A microwave is available for reheating (30 seconds max)
NO peanuts/nuts/seafood
We have already had students asking for extra food because they are still hungry, so it’s a good idea to add a couple extra snacks!
As of right now, there is no breakfast program running at the school
Food Programs:
Students will have the choice of ordering lunches from the provincial program and our school vendors. Both of these programs are up and running. Visit the following links to sign up:
Both websites will require you to identify your child's class - we are class 1A
Provincial Healthy Lunch Program: https://www.peischoolfood.org
School vendor: https://glenstewartprimary.hotlunches.net/admin/?action=register-form
If your child is absent, there will be no reimbursement for food orders
HotLunches can be added or changed up until 9:00pm on Sunday nights
Additional Information:
Masking: Students are required to wear a mask on the bus, in the hallways, and where social distancing is not possible - please ensure your child has a clean mask every day for school.
I recommend you keep a bag in your child’s backpack with a change of clothes including socks and underwear. This can be helpful for spills, rainy days and accidents.
Your child should have a pair of indoor shoes that stay at school. Please don’t send your child in shoes with laces if they are unable to tie them independently :)
Make sure your child is dressed appropriately for the weather asg it can be so unpredictable and change drastically throughout the day.
We are asking that no toys come to school until further notice. I know this can be difficult for our students but personal items often get lost or broken and can be a distraction during work time.
Please send a water bottle each day with your child (there are no water fountains this year)
Early Student Pick Ups and Late Drop Offs – For early student pick ups or late drop offs, parents are asked to contact me by phone or email in advance. If your child's plans change last minute, contact the main office as I likely won't check my email until the end of each school day.
Pick up after school - Parents, who are picking up their children after school must do so in the designated area outside by the staff parking lot fence. Parents are not permitted in the bus loop.
