Hello Parent(s),


We will have a small Valentine celebration on Monday. Children can hand out Valentines and any treats that are prepackaged. They are always so excited to look and read their valentine cards…great literacy activity!


Here is a list of our students: Marshall, Kyaira, Dante, Makaeda, Charlotte, Jack, Paisley, Callie, Brady, Mason, Nicolas, Jaxon, Renee, Jackson, May, Emma, Brinley, Diego, James, Micah, Blake, Sadie and L.J.


I would like each student over the weekend to work on zippering up their jackets and getting ready independently. Currently, it is taking us 15 minutes to get fully ready for recess with half the class needing help to zip up their zippers. I would like to cut this time by half to get ready for recess time. Thank you for your help!


This week, we spent a lot of time reviewing and working on sounding out words and then taking an ending and rhyming with it independently. At, it, an, etc…. This is a great activity to review at home. I’ve noticed that students need more support with recognizing their short vowel sounds. I also worked on testing as many as I could, on their sight words this week. I will finish the rest next week. Please review the sight words that were sent home in their homework bags.


In math we are working on counting on from the higher number. An example is 3+5= put 5 in your mind “click” ( take a picture) and then count up 6, 7, 8.

We are also learning the making 10 strategy which is all the ways to make the number ten when adding: 0+10 =10, 1+9=10. 2+8=10, 3+7=10, 4+6=10, 5+5=10, 6+4=10, 7+3=10. 8+2=10, 9+1=10, 10+0=10

It is important that students automatically know all the ways to make 10 quickly as this will support them in grade 2 math next year. So when I say 3 +? =10. They should be able to say 7 quickly.

A huge thank you to you all who supported your children with online learning! I know it was not easy and definitely had challenges, especially for families with multiple children in different grades or younger children at home. I had a very high engagement of students completing their work and joining our Google Meets when they could. I’m very proud of this class! Thank you:)


A reminder to pick up your test kits at school today from 8 - 5pm if you didn't already and you can drop off Chrome Books at your earliest convenience.


Google Meet at 10 today for a game of Bingo. You will need paper and pencil or white board, marker and eraser.


Your child can pick and choose a few activities to do today from the following:

Reading 20 Minutes

  • You can read homework books, books from home or try reading some online books.

  • Read for 15 minutes

  • When you are finished reading, practise retelling the story…if you get stuck look back at the book to help you and flip through the pages.

  • Read to someone older


Writing 20 Minutes

  • Con’t finishing your Procedural writing from yesterday

  • If Procedural writing is more difficult for your child they can just pick a topic and write. Any type of writing:)


Math 20 minutes

  • Review counting backwards from any number between 100 - 0. An example 79, 78, 77, 76, 75 , 74 etc..

  • Get someone to call out any number between 0 and 100 and write the number down.

  • Skip count by 2’s to 20

  • Skip count by 5’s to 100

  • Skip count by 10’s to 100

  • Review any double facts that are hard for you to remember

  • Continue on with 10 monkeys if you have time.


Heading back to school, please look for and pack the following items:

  • Indoor sneakers, if your child took them home

  • Please write your child’s name on their new mask they got from the school. Everyone has the same colour/style.

  • Please pack a few extra masks in a bag since they will be wearing them all day now. So we can get a new one if it breaks or gets wet.

  • If you have a few small present bags( that just fit a mask), please send in a couple so your child can store their mask when in Phys. Ed class or going outside for recess.

  • Pack Writer’s Notebook

  • Duotang for calendar/reading log

  • Please have a look all around your house to find as many homework books to take back to school. Everyone got extras so they should have around 10 homework books to take back to school.

Today is Family Literacy Day. We will have a P.J. Google Meet and they can build a fort/ go into a little pop up tent etc… for cozy reading time. They can show their creations during our Google Meet at 10 and send me a picture of their fort. Today on our Google Meet we will focus on reading. They can read to me and show their forts. If time, I will do a read aloud with them.

  • Have a list of ingredients/materials needed at the top of your page.

  • Introduce your topic in your very first sentence ( I am writing about how to brush my teeth.)

  • Give the exact directions/steps of how to do this in the correct order.

  • Use words like first, second, third, next, and, then, finally

  • Your last sentence should include an ending to encourage the reader to try doing/making this.

  • Watch our Procedural video/ Read aloud book “ Paint a Mouse Face” posted under writing on our Google Site for extra help/tips if you are stuck or need more help.

  • If Procedural writing is to hard, they can write about anything they choose today, just like last week.


Math 20 minutes

  • Build a Fort today

  • Take a picture of you reading in your fort and send it to me

  • Practise adding one or two to any number from 0 - 20

  • Practise take awaying one or two from any number 0 - 20

10 am Google Meet - Today I will be reading a Procedural story book and then we will continue on with our Procedural Writing. I will record the reading and any tips we have for Procedural Writing for anyone who can’t make our Google Meet.


Just a reminder that the link for our Google Meets is on the home page of our Google Site. Your child will need to be admitted into the Google Meet by me. If you are doing small group or individual meets with me, just click the Google Meet on time or a few minutes beforehand.


We are having a great start to doing Procedural Writing. I just want to remind parents that I’m not expecting their writing to be perfect! It is okay to have spelling mistakes and to be sounding out words the best that they can independently. That is what we do in grade 1 and that is how we learn:) They make mistakes and I will do lessons from those mistakes.

I now have a direct link to our Google Meets from our home page ( main page) of our Google Site. I won’t be sending out any more links/ emails for our meetings. Please have your child bookmark our Google Site page on their device they use. When your child has a Google Meet they can just click on the link and I will admit them to join our meeting. I must be on the Google Meet for them to be allowed on. If I’m working with someone, please try again in a few minutes or just a couple of minutes before our meet. There is an icon of a video/Google meet, click on that icon and it will take you to our Google Meet ( from home page of our Google Site).

This week we will do a new unit in writing called Procedural. Procedural writing is when students get to be the teacher and the writer at the same time to explain How To do Something. This is what we’ll be working on during our Google Meet at 10 am after our Show and Tell. For our Google Meet today your child will need something to show us for Show and Tell and then students will need paper (Writer’s Notebook), pencil and an eraser. Just to get started with an idea for Procedural writing.


Reading 20 Minutes

  • Pick 2 new books to read either online, from home or homework books.

  • Read your books independently a few times or just a chapter or 2 in a chapter book.

  • Make sure you are blending those consonant cluster sounds: sh, ch, th, wh, sp sm, bl, pl, cl etc… when they are in your words.

  • Don’t sound out our sight words… say them in a snap

  • Read to someone older than you.


Writing 20 Minutes

  • Join our Google Meet or watch the video afterwards on our Google Site

  • Today we are learning what Procedural Writing is and getting some ideas

  • They can try to start a Procedural Writing piece today or continue picking a topic and then writing 5 things/sentences about that topic.

  • Get someone to call out different double facts and you say then answer.

  • Practise any unknown Double Facts

  • Also practise taking your objects and practicing adding one or adding 2 ( 1 more and 2 more) to those objects and say how many.

  • Write the number sentence for this an example 5+2=7 10+1 = 11

  • Try the same thing with your objects except take away or minus ( one less or two less 15 - 1 = 14, 20 - 2 = 18 don’t go over sums of 20.

  • Write some number sentences with take away one and take away 2 with sums 20 or less.

  • If time, continue on 10 Monkeys

  • What does it look like

  • What can it do? Does it make sounds? Can it move?

  • Practise saying your doubles

  • Use objects to show the doubles…

  • example : 6 legos + 6 legos = 12 legos go up to 10 + 10

  • Write your numbers to show skip counting by 2’s to 10 and 5’s to 100

  • Work on 10 monkey activities 0-10. Keep working in order so you don’t skip any activities

Please email me with a time/day that works for small group or individual instruction. It is okay, if you need a late afternoon or evening time because of work, I will make it work:) Also, let me know if there is a specific area you would like your child to work on reading, writing or math. I would like to make a plan for this by tomorrow…My first small group will start on Monday.


Google Meet at 10. Students can read to me today and I will review the double fact posters with them.


We are now on the updated 10 Monkeys which gives us access to all of the programs they offer, nothing is locked anymore. Please continue working 0 - 10… I’m hearing that your children are enjoying 10 Monkeys and breezing through the 0 - 10 activities. That’s what we want to see! 0 -10 is a review of early grade 1 outcomes ( September) for the most part and it should be easy starting off but still a great review and check in to see if they are missing/need reviewing of any of those concepts.


Reading 20 Minutes

  • Choose any 2 books or a couple of chapters to read

  • Make sure you are chunking the words to sound out, breaking the words into syllables, consonant clusters, finding sight words inside the word, will help them to solve the unknown word.

  • Read for 15 Minutes independently

  • Read to someone older when the book has been practised a few times.


Writing 20 Minutes

  • Con’t from yesterday if you didn’t finish your story

  • Choose a topic

  • Make sure your beginning sentence introduces your topic to the reader…watch the video from yesterday if you weren’t able to be at our Google Meet. It is posted under writing on our Google Site.

  • Make sure you are including a couple descriptive words, Pop out words and Speech Bubbles

  • Reread your work and fix up anything that needs to be corrected or add anything you missed.

  • Email me your writing

I have assigned everyone levelled reading books on our online reading site. This is an extra support for you at home. Please feel free to continue reading books that you have at home or continue to reach out to me if you would prefer to pick up some new homework books from school. If you are reading books online, let me know how that assigned reading level is…too easy, too hard or just right?


Our Google Meet will start at 10 am today. We will be doing a lesson on making sure we are introducing our topic in the first sentence that we write. A video will be posted for students who can’t make our Google Meet today.


Reading 20 minutes

  • Pick 2 books to read or a chapter/or two if reading a chapter book.

  • Read independently for 15 minutes

  • Choose a book/chapter and read to someone older than you

  • Are you reading with expression and having correct pauses after punctuation? One second after a comma, 2 second pause for periods, exclamation and question marks.

  • Check out the read aloud on our Google site, we have a new one posted from yesterday.


Writing 20 minutes

  • Today we will focus on making sure we are introducing our topic in our first sentence that we write.

  • Reviewing to stay on topic when we are writing

  • Writing at least 4 to 5 sentences…can be more for our story

  • Writing for at least 15 minutes without interruptions

  • Going back and rereading our writing for the last 5 minutes and adding or fixing up any mistakes.


Math 20 minutes

  • Review anything that you are still working on learning from our last couple of days.

  • Counting backwards from 100 to 0, skip counting by 2’s to 20, 5’s to 100 and 10’s to 100.

  • How did you do subitizing? Can you answer them quickly within 3 seconds?

  • You can practise going and doing these things with our videos on Google site.

  • Continue working on 10 monkeys


Please email me with times/days of the week that work best for you and your child to do an additional Google Meet(s). Also, let me know how they are doing in each area so far with online learning…what do they need some extra support in so far? I will be doing small group or individual meetings with your child to support them in reading, writing and math.

Because of the Power Outage at Vernon River School online learning is now cancelled this morning. I will do a Google Meet at 1:00 pm today for those who would like to join…it will be a read aloud today. If you can’t make it, no worries! I will post it under read alouds on our Google Site afterwards.


Thank you for taking the time to try and figure out how to use some of the online resources. Your child will have favourite stories they can read and will enjoy doing some of the extra math activities and games on 10 monkeys. Today, I’m going to try making groups and assigning books for reading. This way, I can see the book while they can read to me later this week. I will try and do our Guided Reading groups or individual for students who can’t make a specific meet.




Reading 20 Minutes

  • Choose a book from your homework, home or online to read.

  • Do a Sneak Peek.. look at the book before reading and make predictions of what you think might happen.

  • Practise reading it… are you using your strategies to figure out unknown words.


Writing 20 Minutes

  • Choose a topic

  • Write 5 things about that topic… What happened? How it happened? Where did it happen? Who were you with?

  • Can you use a couple of descriptive words


Math 20 Minutes

  • 10 Monkeys keep going with 0-10 number recognition…I love that they need to read and follow directions with this program. If your child doesn’t understand get them to read it again before telling them. It is great to build up comprehension and applying those skills. Make sure you have 3 yellow stars in each activity before moving onto 0-20 number recognition.

  • For students who can’t do 10 monkeys please try these activities today: give them a number (0-10) and ask them what the number would be if we add 2 more, 5 more or 1 more to that number.

  • Give a handful of objects and get them to tell you how many?

  • Now take 2 separate handfuls of objects, get your child to tell you which one has more? How many more does it have? What is the fastest way to count those objects? Do this a few different times.

All of our online extra supports are available now. I’m still needing to go in and choose levelled books for each of them to read but students can go online today and read anything they would like. I may need to assign some kids to a harder reading level and some to an easier level…let me know how they are doing with the level they are reading online. I can adjust the level at anytime. Everyone is doing a great job sending me work, thank you. There was a couple of videos that I couldn’t view so I’m going to try them out on my home computer today. If you didn’t get a comment from me, that’s why:)


I am now working on getting more online resources for the class especially since the announcement yesterday with at least one more week of online learning. I didn’t send out the info for 10 monkeys yesterday. I’m going to wait and give you everything at the same time ( one email each) as I work on getting online levelled books for each student to practise reading.


Our Google Meet today at 10 will focus on math and we will focus on everything we did this week for home learning and play a game of bingo. Students will need paper, pencil, eraser or a white board and marker to do this today.

I will be emailing everyone later today with details of the new math account ( username and password) I set up for each student. The program is called 10 Monkeys where it reviews and keeps track of how they are doing in different math outcomes. If you have a son or daughter in the older grades they may be using the program now, mostly grades 1, 2 and 3 at our school. I have an account where I can see how each student is doing. Each student needs to receive 4 stars before moving onto the next section. If they don’t, get them to go back, redo for practise/ more skill development in that area. This program is accessible only during school hours Monday to Friday 7:30 am until 2:00 pm and you must be logged on into their account to keep track. Otherwise, the program will try to get you to buy it!


We will have a Google Meet at 10. Students can pick a book to read, if they wish to read to us. I know this takes more time listening to everyone read which makes this Google Meet go longer. Please feel free to pop on and off as you wish while waiting to read or they are welcome to stay and listen. If you are unable to join the Google Meet, just record the reading and email it to me.


Reading 20 Minutes

  • Keep picking and practising books that are not easy to read.

  • Practise your consonant clusters…sp, sn, cl, dr, etc..( while reading) and breaking a word into syllables to help you sound it out.

  • Reread a book from yesterday or the day before to get better at it!

  • Read to someone older than you


Writing 20 Minutes

  • Today I would like you to write about one of your friends.

  • Tell me who they are? What you like to do with them? What makes them a good friend? Anything else you would like to share about this person?


Math 20 Minutes

  • Review the videos on doubles

  • Draw me a picture of doubles and their answers

  • Practise saying the double and its answer

  • If you have dice at home roll them and try to get a double, add them together and say the answer.

Today, we will have a Google Meet at 10. Students will read their stories they wrote yesterday to the class ( Google Meet today). If you can not make the Google Meet just send me a video of your child reading their story.


Reading 20 Minutes

  • Pick 2 books that are not easy to read yet…you still don’t know all the words without trying to sound them out.

  • Practise reading those books over and over again to build up reading smoothly and recognizing those words without having to sound them out.

  • Read to someone older than you

  • If you have time listen to one of our read aloud stories recorded on our Google Site.


Writing 20 Minutes

  • If you didn’t finish your writing from yesterday. Review the videos under writing I posted on our Google Site. Watch the first video and then write. Watch the second video before you go back to check your writing for any mistakes or anything else you can add like more descriptive words.

  • Today, I would like you to write about one of your favourite homework books that you have been reading. What is the name of the book? What happened at the beginning, middle and ending of this story. What is your favourite part of the story?


Math 20 Minutes

  • Practise counting backwards from 100 to 0

  • Everyone should be getting comfortable skip counting by 2’s and 5’s…if not watch those videos, skip count with the videos, try skip counting using your objects.

  • Build something using your objects and or make a picture using your objects and then count how many objects you used to build it. Was it close to 100? Did you count by 1’s or a faster way of skip counting by 5’s or 10’s.

I really appreciate your feedback, thank you! It is really different teaching and not being able to see at a glance who needs help with what. I will now start emailing both the students and parents emails for our Google Meets so the grade ones who are logged on in their accounts on Chrome books can get onto the Google Meet without having to forward the link to them.


Today we will have a Google Meet and do our writing together starting at 10 and the link will be emailed to students and parent(s) emails. For this they will need paper (Writer’s Notebook or any other type they are using for writing), pencil and an eraser.


Reading 20 Minutes

  • Pick your 2 homework books or books from home and practise reading them independently.

  • Today, I would like you to talk about your book(s) to someone older than you. What happened at the beginning, middle and end. What was your favourite part of the story or why did you not like this book?

  • Pick one of your books to read to someone older than you.


Writing 20 Minutes

  • Join us for the Google Meet or you can write independently

  • Pick a topic

  • Think of some things 4 to 5 that you can write about with this topic..making a fort, snowman, sledding, jumping in the snow was a lot of stories I heard from yesterday

  • Pick a few descriptive words that you could use to describe your topic: cold, heavy, wet, huge, fast, little, big, etc…

  • Can we use some speech bubbles

  • And write

  • When finished we always reread to check that is sounds write ( correct any words where letters maybe missing) and make sure we have punctuation to start and end each sentence ( capital letter, period, exclamation mark or a question mark if asking a question)

  • Remember, you may need more than one day to finish any piece of writing that we do…that’s okay! We just continue the next day like in school.


Math 20 Minutes

  • Today use your objects you have for counting..touch, move the object and count it. Can you count to 100 by doing this and not making any mistakes?

  • Is there a faster way to do this using the objects instead of counting by 1’s? Can you try a faster way either by 5’s grouping the objects or by 10’s?

  • Practise skip counting by 2’s to 20 without using any objects and write it down as you say it. Do you see the pattern? We are always just adding 2 to the number before

  • If you have time, you can watch the video on doubles and practise your double facts.

We will have a Google Meet at 10 for a Talk and Share about our weekend. I will also review word syllables at the end. I will send out the link around 9:45. If your child has any questions or needs some help with anything please let me know and I can spend some extra time with them on a Google Meet.


Please email me if your child needs some new books and I will make arrangements to gather some up for them.


Reading 20 minutes

  • Go to word study on our Google Site and watch the video on syllables

  • Get one of your homework books and find 1 syllable, 2 syllable and maybe 3 or 4 syllable words.

  • Say the word, tap the word on your arm and count how many syllables.

  • While sounding out unknown words today try to break the word into syllable parts and that will help you.

  • Practise reading 2 of your homework books independently

  • Read to someone older than you while trying to read with good fluency and expression



Writing 20 minutes

  • Think of one of the things you did this weekend

  • Pick your topic

  • Tell me at least 4 to 5 sentences about what happened. How you did it? What did it feel like? Where were you? Who was with you?

  • Remember to try and use some descriptive words like : cold, windy, huge, hard, dark, bright, big, small, and fluffy.

  • Write independently for 15 minutes

  • Reread your work over to check and see if it sounds right and if you forgot any letters while spelling your words or capital letters and periods to end your sentences.


Math 20 minutes

  • Please keep the 100 things you used on Friday in a bag so we can use them again this week.

  • Practise counting backwards from 100 to 0

  • Group your objects into groups of 2 and skip count by 2’s to 20

  • Group your objects into groups of 5 and skip count by 5’s to 100

  • Watch the video on double facts

  • Doubles is a number plus the same number

  • Group your objects into pairs like 1+1, 2+2, 3+3, 4+4, 5+5

I’m so impressed with the awesome Google Meet and the great printing of your numbers that everyone emailed me! Thank you for your great home learning yesterday.


My apologies to people who are using a Chrome book. I did not know that YouTube is blocked to all users on the Chrome book and just found out yesterday. If you have a different device, it should play the videos.


Today, I will have a Google Meet where students can read to me one of their homework books or a book from home. I will send the link out at 9:45 and start the meet by 10 am. Students can go on and off this meet after they read their story or stay on and listen. I will stay on the link for until 11 or later if students are lined up to read today:)


Reading 20 minutes - You can pick any of your homework books or books from home to read. Today, I will listen to you read at a Google Meet or you can read by yourself for 15 minutes practising proper pausing after the punctuation marks and changing your voice to use expressions. You can also pick one of these stories ( or both if you like) and listen to a read aloud.

Writing 20 minutes

  1. Reread your writing from yesterday. Does it sound right? Check to see if you added a capital letter to start each sentence and have end punctuation marks. If you didn’t finish your writing from yesterday continue working on it today. If you're finished, start a new writing idea today.


When you are finished email me a copy so I can read what you are writing about!


Math 20 minutes

  1. You can listen and practise counting backwards with our videos on Google Site 100 to 0.

  2. Find 100 of something that you can use to practise grouping and counting. Legos, macaroni, cereal etc…

  3. Listen to the videos on Google Site and practise skip counting by 2’s to 20, 5’s to 100 and 10’s to 100.

  4. Group your objects you found by 2’s to 20… practise skip counting by 2’s. Next, put each into groups of five and practise counting. Lastly, put the objects into groups of 10 and skip count by 10’s to 100.

Dear Parents/Guardians,


We are going to ease our way back into our school work just like we would at school! We will be reviewing previous skills for the first 2 days. I also want you and your child to become familiar with our Google Site. The Google Site is where you will find everything you need except the links for our Google Meets which I will just email beforehand. I’m trying to set up the Google Site with information/videos the students can listen independently too…There is a lot of Jack Hartman under math!

  1. Reading 20 minutes - Pick and choose from your homework books or books you have from home to read. You can read by yourself for the first 15 minutes and practise reading with fluency and good expression. For the last 5 minutes, please read to a grown up, babysitter or a big brother or sister!


  1. Writing 20 minutes - Everyone should have their Writer’s Notebook with them at home. Go under our Google Site and click writing. Watch the punctuation video. Then think of something to write about… skating outside, talk about your Christmas, what did you do over Christmas break? Sleepover with grandparents? Etc… Students should write for 15 minutes and then reread their writing and check to see if they remembered those punctuation marks.


  1. Math 20 Minutes -

  • Click on math in our Google site. Watch the Jack Hartmann videos of counting Forward from 0 -100, counting backwards from 100 to 0.

  • Practise independently counting forwards starting at 0 and count to 100.

  • Practise counting backwards starting at 100 to 0.. If you need help doing this, count backwards with Jack Hartmann

  • Get a sheet of paper and write your numbers from 0 to 100.


Google Meet at 10, for those that can attend.

We will meet on Google Meet for a classroom Show and Share… They can

talk about their Xmas and share something they got with the class at 10 am. I will send the link out by 9:45 am.


Remember each day there is 1 hour for health, music or Phys.Ed activities. Today we have music and make sure you get them outside for some recess time!

I need to keep attendance and keep a record of their work completed for home learning. I will be able to do some of this with our Google Meets. I will also need you to send me a picture or keep me up to date by emails with how things are going. Today, I ask you to email me a picture of their numbers they printed from 0 - 100. You can go under notes on your phone, camera and take a PDF copy so it is easier to read…if you have that on your phone. I need to have Thursday’s attendance in on Friday. I know some parents are working and will be trying to get this completed in the evenings, that’s no problem!


Lastly, I need you to please email me with questions, issues the kids are having etc… so I can add or make changes with our work. I’m not sure how kids did with the extra homework books I sent home? Do we need something more here or are we good with what we have? I can add or delete as needed to try and accommodate everyone.
