October 13th - October 16th
Hi Families!
We had another wonderful week in grade one! Thank you to everyone who took part in the International Walk To School Day. We started Guided Reading, where I read with small groups of students and do specific instructional lessons based on their reading needs. They did fantastic at guided reading and the rest of the class is either doing individual reading or reading with a partner while I’m working with our Guided Reading group. We also spent time talking about gratitude and sharing the things we feel thankful for.
The students had their photos taken on Thursday. I sent home cards today from the photographer (Everest Solutions). You can scan the QR code or enter the online code to view your child’s photos. The deadline to order photos with free shipping will be Thursday, October 22nd.
I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving weekend spent with family and friends!
Here's what's happening in 1C this week:

Monday: No School ( Happy Thanksgiving)
Tuesday: Day 6 Phys. Ed
Wednesday: Day 1 Music, Library( bring back your library books)

Words of the week - as/has, we/he/she/be/me **We will practice reading and writing these words**
Highlights of this week:
We completed Unit 2 of Fundations. We will begin Unit 3 of Fundations this week. In class, I am working on consonant digraphs. A consonant digraph is two consonants together that make one sound such as “s” and “h” together make the sound of /sh/. We will be working on learning the following consonant digraphs:
wh - whistle - /w/ ch - chin - /ch/ sh - ship - /sh/
th - thumb - /th/ ck - sock - /ck/
In class we will be working on tapping and blending to read and write words containing these consonant digraphs. We will also be working on “qu” which is referred to as the “buddy letter” because “q” always has its buddy “u” right beside it in words in the English language.
Reading Homework: Your child will have 2- 3 practice books that they can read throughout the week. Please return these books every Friday. Some students did not get homework books today because they have books home they forgot to return on Friday. Please return them tomorrow and I’ll get them some new books to read for homework.

We had so much fun during our field trip last Friday to Cotton Park. The weather cooperated nicely and the children had so much fun playing and exploring!
We will be kicking off our homework reading routine this week. Your child will come home with 3 books on Monday. These books may be a variety of levels. Your child will also have a Fundations review sheet that you can use to reinforce the skills that are being taught in class. Our goal in Grade 1 is for homework to be a calm and easy activity each evening.
Next week, we will be going on our field trip to Orwell Corner! Our class will be going on Friday, October 16th. This is always a highlight of the year and lots of memories will be made! Please make sure that you do not order hot lunches for our field trip day. Please keep an eye out for the permission slip coming home this week!

Hi Everyone,
Just a quick overview of the week ahead. We are now adding more of a work load to our day in grade 1. We started writing about things we know…our weekend, something we like etc… We are trying to stay away from imagination things for now. We are going to be printing the letters a, g, d, s, e, r, p, j, l, h, k, v, w, y, x . We are going to be working more on expectations of what it looks like and what are the rules in our line ups, outside at recess, how to be a good friend. We will also be reviewing proper hand washing.
In math, we are working on counting to 20 forwards and backwards. I will start using some ten frames and have students model the number I call out. They will also be working on counting sets of objects or filling dishes with the correct amount of objects that matches a number. We started subitizing objects today from 1-10. Here is some links to practice at home:
