JaN. 29- Feb.2

Hi Parents,

Welcome to a new week. It is hard to believe that we are in the last few days of January. Time is flying! I have noticed the students have had a rather challenging time getting back into the routines of school after the Christmas break. Many of them are arriving at school tired and not feeling the best.  Hopefully, everyone will rebound soon so our learning can continue. Thanks for your support at home.

Winter clothing:

Please continue to send your child to school with extra socks and mittens. Many of these items are wet for second recess.

Valentine's Day:

Feb. 14th is Valentine's day. On that day, 2B will be doing a Valentine card exchange. I will send home a list this Wednesday of everyone's names in our class. Please have your child fill out a small valentine for each person. This is such a fun activity for our class!

Writing and Reading:

We are continuing our unit on Non-Fiction books. The students are loving all of the information they are learning from these books and many are paying attention to the text features in their own homework books.

Fundations:

This week we are working on adding suffixes to base words

( -y, -ly,-ty) for example safety , ninety,  grumpy

Please practice this week's trick words that were listed on last Wednesday's homework sheet

night, carry, something, say, says, between, each, eight, large, city, every, family, see

Jan. 22, 2024

January 22- 26, 2024

Hi Parents,

I have been experiencing a lot of issues with this site since before Christmas. I am hoping it will be working from now on and that we won't experience any more issues. My apologies !

Winter clothing:

Please continue to send your child to school with a hat, mittens, extra socks and snow pants. Many of the students try to go outside without snow pants so a little conversation  at home may be helpful.

Homework:

Reading each night is the most important part of your child's homework. Thank you for continuing to make this a valuable routine at home. The expectation is to read 15 minutes each night. If you ever want a book for several nights, just get your child to ask me.

Writing:

We have been working on writing our own Non-Fiction books at school. I have introduced many text " features" that can be found in Non-fiction such as labels, captions, real pictures, headings , etc. The students are really enjoying this form of writing. I will be sharing these books when you come in to see me at PT interviews.

Math:

We have moved into SUBTRACTION strategies. So far, we have introduced doubles subtraction, counting back( 1,2,3) and subtracting Zero. Any extra practice of these strategies, as well as, the addition strategies from first term would be beneficial.

Important Reminders:

Have a wonderful week!

Nov. 27, 2023

Nov.27- December 1, 2023

Hi Parents,

Thank you to everyone who attended Parent-Teacher interviews last week. It was a wonderful chance to chat with you and to share all of the great work your child is doing. I am so proud of the work your child is accomplishing! Keep up the terrific support at home!

Winter clothing:

The cold weather is here so please continue to send your child to school with a warm coat, hat, mittens, extra socks and snowpants. Also, if you could label your child's clothing that would be helpful.

Writing:

We wrapped up our small moment stories at the end of last week. This week we are beginning Fictional writing. We will be teaching the students about generating characters, setting, constructing a problem and a solution. From what we saw today, I think we have some great story writers in this class. We will be working on this type of writing until Christmas break.

Math:

Story problems is one of the newest concepts we are working on in Grade 2. The children are catching on to how to solve the 5 steps to story problems. I will continue to share stories and how to explain their thinking by following the steps I've outlined to them.

Fundations

We completed the Unit 4 test last Wednesday. Unfortunately, our scores did not fair out so well. I will provide some reachback to those students who need a little more time on suffixes. In the meantime, we are moving into multi-syllable words in Unit 5. These concepts can be tricky for children so we will make sure everyone understands the skills we are teaching in spelling. Please continue to review the TRICK WORDS at home.

November 6-10, 2023

Hi Parents,

Wow ! Last week had a lot of highlights for us . . .Halloween, first snowfall and a movie Friday afternoon! The kids were so tired by the end of the week. Hopefully this weekend, with an extra hour of sleep, will reset everyone for a new week. We will be having a Remembrance Day assembly on Nov. 10.

Winter clothing:

Thank you parents for sending your child in warm clothing for recess time. An extra pair of socks and mitts/gloves would be helpful when their other pairs get wet.

Parent Teacher interviews:

You will be able to sign up for a Parent teacher interview with me beginning on Monday, Nov.6. Interviews will be held the week of Nov. 20-24. An email on how to sign up will be sent from the school or you can check the website for West Royalty school to follow the link. I will be offering times after school throughout that week, not just on Thursday and Friday.

I am looking forward to seeing you all and chatting about your child's progress.

Hi Parents,

It was a great week in 2B. The students accomplished a lot of work and I was pleased to see some growth in many of their skills. The beginning of the new school year is all about review from Grade one. Many of the children have now rebounded from where they were when they left Grade one and are starting to settle into the new expectations of Grade two. I will be completing some assessments this week in reading, Fundations and math strategies. Keep up the great work at home by supporting your child with homework. It makes a huge difference in their skills. I can't do it alone!

Halloween Dance:

Tickets will be on sale until Tuesday, Oct 24 for the Halloween Dance on Thursday from 6:00-7:30. If your child would like to attend, you must purchase a ticket for them and yourself. Children need to be in attendance with a parent. Tickets can only be purchased before the dance at school. No tickets will be sold at the door.

Preservice Teacher from UPEI:

Maureen Bungay begins her pre-service teaching tomorrow. She will be with us for the next 8 weeks. She will be doing a lot of observation for the first 2 weeks. After that, she will begin to teach some lessons with me before she tries teaching on her own. I am sure the children will give her a warm welcome on Monday and make her feel at home in our classroom.

Homework:

Please remember to have your child complete and return the assigned homework sheet every Wednesday. Thank you for signing your child's reading log each night after they have read to you. These 2 tasks are so important to build good work habits at home and to help build stronger skills as a reader.

October 10, 2023

October 10-13, 2023

Hi Parents,

I hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving. I heard lots of great stories about everyone's weekend when we arrived this morning!

Homework bag:

Please ensure your child packs their nightly book, duotang and green zippered bag into their school bag EVERYDAY. Also, after your child has read their 10-15 minutes to you, please sign their duotang so I have a sense of how the reading went. Some books that come home may be longer so if you wish to keep a particular book for 2 nights, please just let me know when you add your signature.

New Class Pet:

On Friday, 2B met their new class pet!! We now have a Beta fish named Blueberry to care for in our classroom. The students earned him by filling the "Marble Jar" for all of their great work. The students are so excited about him!

Battery Blitz:

Please send in any used batteries( in a baggie) to school. We will be collecting them over the next few weeks. The class that brings in the most batteries( by weight) will win a pizza party!

Curriculum

In Reader’s Workshop this week, we will continue to talk about setting reading goals to build our stamina as readers.  We will also begin to focus on reading fluency as well.  My guided reading groups are up and running.  As a result, from time to time, your child may bring home an extra book to read at night (from that day’s guided reading lesson).

For spelling( Fundations)  students are to practice these words:  shall, full, pull, both, talk, walk, from, do, does, here over the next 2 weeks.

In Writer’s Workshop, we will launch a new unit of study ‘Lessons from the Masters’.  This unit continues to focus on narrative writing but we will go deeper into this genre and learn how to craft more sophisticated small moment stories.

In Math this week, students are continuing to work on different ways of representing numbers to 100, various ways of counting, Odd & Even numbers, and the Doubles facts.  Students were also introduced to the Doubles plus 1 strategy last week so we will be spending some time practicing this new strategy.  And we will also continue to explore estimating quantities to 100 and ordinal numbers.

October 3, 2023

October 3-6, 2023

Hi Parents,

I hope you had a chance to enjoy this beautiful weekend. As we are now into October, the temperatures are going to start to cool. Please ensure your child is dressed appropriately for the weather in the mornings. It can be chilly outside at recess! Also, we will be doing some activities this week in preparation for Thanksgiving. We have so much to be thankful for!

Homework:

Congratulations on the completion of the first official week of homework!  The only ‘must-do’ on the weeknights is the reading.  Ideally, your child should read for approximately 10 minutes each night.  The books your child takes home are meant to be easy for them, and they shouldn’t be stopping to solve too many words.  If you need a pair of dice or chips for the math games, please let me know and I will send some along with your child.  The pink half scribbler that was sent home can be used for your child to practice their trick words and math facts.  We will have our first Fundations ( spelling) unit quiz this Friday, so please ensure that your child continues to practice their trick words.

Curriculum:

In Reading and Writing Workshop, we are continuing to work on the same things as noted in last week’s update. Our Guided Reading groups will begin this week.

In Math, students are continuing to work on the outcomes previously stated.  New this week, I will introduce Ordinal Numbers to 10 to the students.  We will also begin our next mental math strategy - Doubles plus 1 (e.g. “If I know 7 + 7 = 14, then 7 + 8 = 15, which is 1 more).

Have a lovely week everyone.

September 25, 2023

September 25-29, 2023

Hi Parents,

Last week was another terrific week in 2B! We celebrated " Friday Treat Day" by making Fall art and Sunflower pictures with pastels. The class loved it! What a fun way to wrap up our week together.

Homework:

Homework is up and running. Your child is beginning to get into the routine of signing out a book at school, packing it to take home to read and returning it the next day. Please make time to listen to your child read each night. It builds important reading habits and is a fun way to connect with your child. After they have read to you, you may comment on their sheet to let me know how the book went. This helps me figure out their level of difficulty.

You will notice on Fridays that I send home the file work we have completed for the week. This is a great way for you to see what we have been working on and if your child is experiencing any difficulty in any areas. You keep any work that is sent home.

Please make sure your child's duotang and green zippered bag goes back and forth to school every day.

Reading:

In Reading Workshop, we continue to discuss what independent reading should look/sound like in Grade 2. Our reading

"stamina" is beginning to grow and we are reading for longer periods of time. I am sitting with individual students each day to listen to them read. I am noting how they sound as readers and what books will fit them well for independent reading.

Writing:

In Writing Workshop, we are working on “Revving up Your Writing Muscles”. We are writing " small moment" stories where the students tell me about something that has happened to them or about a place they have been. The stories are amazing! I am enjoying reading their work and getting to know everyone a little bit better. I encourage independence at writing time. Students are expected to "tap" out their words if they need to know how to spell a word. We have word lists and writing aids in our classroom as well.

Math:

In Math, students are working on different ways of representing numbers to 100.  We are doing a lot of work with the 100's chart and practicing their counting in different ways ( 1's, 2's, 5's, 10's).  Students will also continue to practice their doubles facts to 20. We are working on odd/ even numbers and greater/less than concepts.

Health:

In Health, we are discussing friendships, relationships and kindness as part of the Relationship Choices unit.

We will also spend some time this week talking about Terry Fox and Orange Shirt Day for National Truth and Reconciliation Day,

Orange Shirt Day:

On Thursday, September 28th, students are encouraged to wear an orange shirt if they have one at home.  If your child does not have an orange shirt, we will provide them with an ‘Every Child Matters’ badge that they can apply to their shirt.  Throughout this week, we will highlight the message that ‘Every Child Matters’.

September 18, 2023

September 18-22, 2023

Hi Parents,

We had a wonderful first full week of school!

Thank you for attending  our ‘Meet the Teacher’ night on Tuesday. It was wonderful to meet many of you. If you were unable to attend and have any questions, please email me at jlyeo@edu.pe.ca

Homework:

We will begin homework this Wednesday, Sept. 20. Your child will be bringing home a book to read to you. Their book should be relatively easy as we get back into reading. This is to build their confidence and make it enjoyable! You can sign and comment on how it went on their daily log sheet found inside their duotang. A math game on Doubling numbers will also be part of your child's homework this week.

Please make sure your child's duotang and green zippered bag goes back and forth to school every day.

Reading:

In Reading Workshop this week, we will start discussing what independent reading should look like in Grade 2. In the beginning, we can only read on our own for a very brief period of time so we have to start to build our reading " stamina". This will allow us to read for a longer time. I will also be starting my Guided Reading groups in a couple of weeks.  During Guided Reading, I will meet with a small group of students to read a book together. This will allow me an opportunity to see where my readers are in word solving /fluency and I can teach them strategies to strengthen their skills.

Writing:

In our Writing Workshop, we will begin a unit called “Revving up Your Writing Muscles”. This unit reviews some of the expectations from Grade one, as well as refreshes everyone's ideas of what writing time looks like. We will be writing " small moment" stories where the students wiltell about something that has happened to them .. . . A real life experience! These will be so much fun to read!

Math:

In Math, students are working on different ways of representing numbers to 100.  We are doing a lot of work with the 100s chart and practicing their counting in different ways ( 1's, 2's, 5's, 10's).  Students will also continue to practice their doubles facts to 20.  Our Math Workshop involves a great deal of hands-on learning activities to reinforce the concepts.

Peanut Free/Nut Free School:

Please be reminded that we are a nut free school. This includes all nuts such as peanuts, almonds, Brazil nuts, cashews, hazelnuts, pecans, pistachios, walnuts, etc.  In addition, products that imitate peanut butter such as WOW and pea butter are also not permitted.

Breakfast Program:

The breakfast program is up and running at our school.  However, we always need parent volunteers to assist with the running of the program.  If you are able to help out either in the morning or afternoon (between 2:00-2:30), please contact Audrey Llewellyn at aclewellyn@edu.pe.ca.  A criminal record check will need to be completed for all volunteers, but the school is able to provide a letter in order to get the check done for free.

May 8, 2023

May 8-12, 2023

Hi Parents,

It was a lovely weekend. I hope you had a chance to get outdoors to enjoy it.

Medical Leave Rescheduled:

I just found out that my surgery has been rescheduled to this Friday, May 12. Luckily, Karen MacDonald is still available to substitute for me during my 4 week leave. I will be on leave from May 12- June 12.

Weekly Homework:

Students' homework has been steadily declining over the past few weeks. Many are not passing in the quality work they had been doing all year. I realize everyone is beginning to tire of the homework routine but I urge you to please make homework a priority for the month of May. Many valuable skills need to be practiced beyond the school day and I know you will support your child in this worthwhile routine. Thank you for your support!

Reading:

Reading assessments have now been completed. I will be using this data to help prepare my Learning Reports. I am thrilled with the growth my students have shown throughout the year. They have gained so many skills! I am so proud of them and all of their hard work.

Writing:

This will be our last week of procedural writing. Students will complete several more examples before we wrap up on Friday.

Math:

We started looking at 2-digit subtraction equations with regrouping. This is one of the hardest concepts students will encounter in Grade 2 math. I have been doing a lot of hands-on work with base 10 blocks so students can see why they need to regroup in order to subtract. Many are catching onto it but please be patient with them. If they need blocks or to draw the problem, please encourage them to do so.

Students need to be practicing their addition and subtraction facts at home in order to achieve 3-second mastery by June.

Reminders:

Have a fantastic week,

Mrs. Yeo

February 12, 2023

Hello everyone! I hope you had a nice weekend.

Unfortunately mine was not so great. My oldest son Will was injured on Saturday and broke his ankle! He is having surgery today( Sunday) so I will be away from school for Monday and Tuesday with him.

I am hoping to be back to school on Wednesday, Feb. 15. . . fingers-crossed!

Writing:

The class is continuing to work on Procedural writing.  Students were able to complete 3 procedural writing pieces this past week and demonstrate an understanding/ independence for this unit. I will include a couple of science experiments as part of our writing this week.

Math:

In Math Workshop, we will continue to reinforce and practice 2-digit addition and subtraction( without regrouping). I have taught the students they can " build it"   " stack it"   or   " bridge it". The more practice students do on their mental math facts, the easier these equations become. Students will also begin a short unit on Measurement, where they will use non-standard units of measure to determine the length of various objects.

Hi Parents,

I think the class had a great week with Mrs. MacDonald. She had nothing but kind words for the kids and said she enjoyed being in 2B while I was away with family. I am so fortunate to have all of you as my parent community and I appreciate everything you do to offer a helping hand to your child every single day. You are awesome!

Awesome Animals Performance

Reserve May 3 for your child's performance in a musical called " Awesome Animals". Our class will be performing at 1:05-1:35 on that day. If there is anything specific that Mrs. Zinck would like your child to wear that day, I will inform you as the date gets closer.

Sickness in the Classroom

Please continue to closely monitor your child for any symptoms prior to their arrival at school. We are seeing an

increase in sickness and are trying our best to limit the spread of any illness to other students. I realize this can be difficult and children often have symptoms arise quickly and without much warning. We will continue to wash our hands as much as possible, open windows for ventilation and practice good coughing/sneezing hygiene. Thanks for your support.

Reading & Writing:

Persuasive writing is just about complete. We will be having a little publishing party this week to finish things off in proper style!

I am amazed at how much enjoyment writing brings to these young authors. It makes me proud to see the growth they have accomplished throughout this unit. They have a lot to be proud of!

Math:

As I discussed with many of you at Parent Teacher interviews, we are focusing on building our speed with addition and subtraction math facts to 18. As much practice as you can fit in at home is so beneficial for your child. I am seeing improvements in their confidence and time in solving but it requires consistent practice.

We will be beginning 2-digit subtraction.

Reminders:

Have a terrific week everyone!

I hope you had a nice weekend. The kids and I had a great " movie night" on Friday evening. We watched 101 Dalmatians and it was a wonderful way to finish up our week. I think it will be something they will always remember! Thanks for providing transportation to/from school.

I am out this week and Mrs. MacDonald will be substituting for me.

World Autism Day

Monday, April 3 is World Autism Day. Students and staff are encouraged to wear blue on Monday.

Coupon book order forms

On Wednesday, April 5 your child will be taking home the order form for coupon books. This is a school fundraiser we have done the past few years. Please watch for this form in your child's homework bag.

Reading & Writing:

This week should be our wrap-up to our persuasive writing unit. The students have done so well and have been very engaged in this writing form. They have worked very hard at mastering a strong introduction, thinking about their audience, adding proof of their opinions, and a simple conclusion. It has amazed me how much enjoyment they have had with writing letters about their favorite characters and books. It has been a fun unit to teach!

Math:

As I discussed with many of you at Parent Teacher interviews, we are focusing on building our speed with addition and subtraction math facts to 18. As much practice as you can fit in at home is so beneficial for your child. I am seeing improvements in their confidence and time in solving but it requires consistent practice.

We continue to focus on 2 digit addition ( with and without Regrouping). The sheet on the back of your child's homework this Wednesday will be an example of how to solve 2-digit equations. Monitor how they are doing with this concept. It is relatively new and some are still finding it challenging when regrouping is necessary.

Movie/Popcorn fundraiser for Easter Seals

Our final Easter seals fundraiser will be a school-wide movie and popcorn afternoon this Thursday, April 6. Students are asked to bring in a toonie if possible. Thank you for all of your support!

Reminders:

Happy Easter! Have a great week.

March 13-17, 2023

Hi Parents,

What a beautiful weekend it has been. I love to see the sun shining and the days getting a little longer. Spring will be here before we know it!

I hope you all had a chance to enjoy some family time together. Thanks to everyone who has been asking about my son Will. He is recovering well from his ankle surgery and has traded his cast in for a new walking boot !

Parent Teacher Interviews/Learning Reports:

Learning Reports will be sent home on March 21.

Parent Teacher interviews will be held that week after school and all morning on March 24 ( No school). Here is the link to sign up for an online appointment          https://wrelementary.schoolappointments.com/admin/

Online booking is open until Thursday, March 16th at 4pm.

Pancake Breakfast:

Last Friday, our school staff and some parent volunteers hosted our first school-wide pancake breakfast. It was a huge success! The students started their day off with a yogurt tube and freshly made pancakes with syrup. It was such a fun way to begin our day. There were a lot of smiling faces.

Reading & Writing:

Our new unit on persuasive writing has begun. I introduced the students to what persuasive writing or opinion writing is all about. It is writing that tries to convince someone of something. We started the unit off by thinking of some of our favorite characters in our book series we have read. We chose Mercy Watson ( a pig) as one of the best. Then we wrote a letter to KA to try to persuade them to read the book series of Mercy Watson!  We wrote another to KC to read The Magic Tree House series. This week, the students are going to choose their own favorite character and write a letter to someone in our school to see if they can convince them to read that book. The students are so excited!

Now that assessments are completed, Guided reading has resumed.

Math:

In Math Workshop, we are working on building our speed for addition and subtraction facts.  It is crucial that students become fluent in answering these facts to 18. Nightly practice is highly recommended! Students are expected by the end of Grade 2 to recall answers within 3 seconds. Your child can practice on Xtramath.org or by simply using flashcards if you choose.

In addition to math facts, we will continue to look at patterns, calendar concepts, and story problems. For the remainder of the year, 2 digit addition and subtraction equations (with and without regrouping) will be the main areas we will concentrate on. These are major concepts for students at this grade level. I will provide lots of practice and teach how to solve these equations in simplified steps.

Science:

In science, our unit is about solids, liquids and gases. The students have been doing some small experiments to help them understand the different states of matter. We will finish this unit up by the end of March.

March 6-10, 2023

Hello everyone,

I hope you all had a wonderful Winter break. I'm looking forward to getting back to see everyone tomorrow. I spent several days in our classroom rearranging furniture and seats to make it feel like a fresh beginning when we return. I've added new books to our classroom library which I'm sure will add lots of excitement. Tomorrow we will be partnering up with 2C to share our Non fiction books we've completed prior to the break.

It will be a great opportunity to have an audience to read our books to.

Parent Teacher Interviews/Learning Reports:

Learning Reports will be sent home on March 21. Parent Teacher interviews will be held on March 23 and 24. As the date gets closer, I will let you know when online booking for appointments will be open. I always look forward to seeing you for an interview. It's my chance to share all of the incredible work your child is doing at school!

Reading & Writing:

We are beginning a new unit of study in Reader's and Writer's Workshop this week - Persuasive writing.  The students will be immersing themselves into this new genre and will be reading several books with me at read aloud time. The class will have many opportunities throughout the week to answer questions, backing up their responses with facts and opinions.. This will prepare them for persuasive writing at the same time!

January 16, 2023

Welcome to a new ( and hopefully healthier) week! Thank you for all of your support last week when I was out sick. My guest teacher on Thursday couldn't believe how mature and hard working my 2B students were. She was very complimentary and enjoyed her time in our class. They truly are the BEST kids!

The grade 2 students will spend the month of January focusing on ‘Kindness’.  Each of the grade 2 classes will be assigned a specific week in January to collect non-perishable food items for the Charlottetown Community Fridge.  This is our collection week in 2B -January 16-20th.

Please send in any food items you can spare.

Reading:

Reading engagement is very high these days with all of our new book selections!! I love seeing the students excited to get to the bookshelf to try out a new book series or a new Non-fiction title. They are spending any free time after their work is completed  . . READING!

This week I will be constructing a bulletin board in our classroom with the many features on Non-fiction books. This is a great reference for students to begin to learn what these features are called and why they are included.

Guided reading is continuing as usual. Please continue to make reading at home a priority to help support the strategies I'm teaching at school. It takes teamwork and I so appreciate your help!

Writing:

We are working on generating a list of topics we are all experts on. I am beginning this week with lessons on how writers " grab" the readers attention in their introduction. We will examine some mentor texts to show us examples of how writers use a strong" lead sentence" to hook the reader and make them want to learn more. The students will try this out in their own writing.

Math:

In Math, we are now beginning SUBTRACTION strategies. The first one we will discuss is subtraction of Doubles. If I know 7+7=14 then 14-7 = ? This week we have a game to reinforce this strategy.

Many students continue to need additional practice with counting patterns ( 2s and 5s) backwards. This is a skill which sometimes takes a great deal of time and practice to solidify for students. Please review with your child at home .

Have a wonderful week.

January 2, 2023

Happy New Year everyone!

I hope you had a wonderful holiday filled with some relaxation and family time. When we are back on Tuesday, it will be right back into curriculum. We have a lot of work to do prior to the 2 week break in February. I am sure the kids will jump back into our routines quickly! Homework will resume this Wednesday.

The grade 2 students will spend the month of January focusing on ‘Kindness’.  Each of the grade 2 classes will be assigned a specific week in January to collect non-perishable food items for the Charlottetown Community Fridge.  I will send more information on this in the coming days.

Reading:

The students will be thrilled to find many new books on our shelves when they return. I took some time over the holidays to organize many books series to introduce to them. Many of these books are considered " chapter books". These always create excitement! They vary in level of difficulty so there should be something that appeals to everyone. I will continue to teach the students strategies for comprehension in longer books. It is always amazing when you see children fall in love with a particular series/ character. I can't wait to see what they are drawn to!

Along with new chapter books, I will be immersing the students into Non-fiction texts. I will be introducing the text features of Non-fiction( table of contents, glossary, index, labels, captions, etc.) They will begin to notice how experts on many topics " teach" others new information.

Writing:

As the class becomes more aware of the features on Non-fiction books through reading, I will demonstrate that they have expert knowledge on many topics too. They will begin to generate a list of topics they can write about in Writer's Workshop. This is one of my favorite units to teach! The students love sharing what they know.

Math:

In Math, I will be introducing students to their last addition strategy - Almost Neighbors/2-aparts (e.g. 6 + 8).  We will also review all addition strategies and begin to work on increasing the speed of response to their addition facts.  To support students in building speed, they can use xtramth.org. Students will be encouraged to log on at home in order to practice their facts. All login information is found in their homework duotang. Please be reminded that students are expected to respond within 3 seconds by the end of grade 2 so ots of practice is necessary.

Reminders:

Have a wonderful week.

January 30, 2023

I hope everyone enjoyed the sunshine over the weekend. It was a beautiful one!

Pink Shirt Day:

We will be celebrating our Pink Shirt day on Friday, February 10th. This is an important day for schools to acknowledge the importance of standing up against bullying. Because the National Pink Shirt Day falls during the Canada Games break, we have selected February 10th as our day at West Royalty School.

Valentine’s Day:

On Tuesday, February 14th, our class will be exchanging Valentines. If your child participates, I respectfully ask that everyone receives one. A class list will be sent home with this week's homework. Staff and students are also encouraged to dress in red and white for Valentine’s Day on February 14th.

For some children, this may be their first experience exchanging Valentine’s Day cards.  You can purchase class sets of Valentine’s Day cards at stores like Dollarama, Price Mart, Walmart, Great Canadian Dollar Store, Buy Rite, etc.

If you are also planning to send in treats, please let me know.  Keep in mind that this is a peanut/nut free school.  If you have any questions, please send me an email.

Winter Wellness Day:

Winter Wellness Day will be held on Friday, February 17. This is a day for schools to celebrate and promote physical activity and provide Island students with a wide variety of opportunities to be active during the school day!. We are planning a pancake breakfast and a school-wide UFit class outside. We are hoping to do a snow sculpting contest on this day (if we have snow and weather permits), and spend some extra time outside enjoying winter activities.

Reading:

In Reader’s Workshop, we are continuing to learn more about how to read and understand Nonfiction books.  Students are learning to use the context and text features to understand new vocabulary. We are also continuing to talk about summarizing the key information learned in a section of a nonfiction book.

Writing:

The class is continuing to write nonfiction books.  This week, they will focus on trying to make their writing interesting and descriptive, keeping their audience in mind.  They will also learn from expert authors of nonfiction books and try out craft moves they notice in their writing.  Towards the end of the week, students will complete a writing assessment.  They will complete it independently and be marked on a 4-point rubric to inform me of what skills they have strengthened since last term.

Math:

Subtraction strategies continue. Please ensure your child is playing the games I send as part of their homework. These will help strengthen their subtraction strategies as well.  For addition, students should be working on faster recall - 3 seconds is the expectation by the end of grade 2. Xtramath. org is probably the easiest way to have your child practice, but flashcards work too! We are continuing to explore patterns, Place Value up to 100, and story problems with addition and subtraction.

November 21-24, 2022

Hi Parents,

We had a very exciting weekend in 2B. . . our eggs started to hatch on Sunday and continued into today. We now have 22 chicks living in our pen that the students helped set up last Friday. They were very resourceful and made sure there was everything the chicks would need . . food, water and heat!

Everyone will get a chance to hold them over the next few days once they get a little more climatized. The chicks will stay with us until this Friday.

This has been such a great learning experience for the students. We played a Jeopardy game on Friday to test our knowledge and I was so amazed at how much they learned from the project. Well done 2B !

Parent Teacher Interviews:

Thank you Parents for signing up for interviews this week. I am looking forward to sharing your child's work and discussing their progress with you. If you are a parent who requires an interpreter, your interview time will be sent home this week and held next week after school.

Christmas Families

We are collecting any donations you can provide to help support our own families in our school community. Please place your donation in the envelope provided last week. Any donation is graciously accepted. Many thanks!

November 14-18, 2022

Hi Parents,

I hope you enjoyed your long weekend. I am looking forward to this week being a 5-day week with students. We have had so many interruptions

with shortened weeks. It will feel good to be together for a regular week!

Curriculum:

Reading workshop: We will begin to focus on " thinking while reading". Good readers need to ask themselves questions while they read. This helps them to think about what is happening in the story. The "w" questions of who, what, when, where and why will be our focus. Many students at this age can answer most of the " w" questions, with the exception of WHY. This is higher level thinking and requires the students to infer and use clues from their reading to be able to answer. These skills will be modelled at Guided Reading where I can support everyone.

Writing Workshop: Many students are having some difficulty with using lower-case letters consistently with proper letter formation. They are using a mixture of upper and lower-case letters without proper capitalization. I will be doing lessons around this throughout the week. Grade 2 students need to get this under control as soon as possible to develop good printing skills. If you are noticing your child using upper-case letters in their homework, please ask them to correct their work.

Note: I will be completing a 103 no-excuse word spelling quiz this week. Their list of 103 words is in their homework bag. These are the words they are expected to know how to spell correctly by the end of grade two.  I will be doing a preliminary assessment of those words THIS week, so that parents have an idea of which words they know and which words they need to continue working on. If your child works on an adapted word list ( 4 words per week) I will NOT be asking them to complete this assessment until next term.

Math: Story problems are going well. The class is learning to find the missing piece by deciding whether the problem requires addition or subtraction to solve. Rereading problems is necessary when attempting to solve. We will continue to review addition strategies, ways to represent a number, counting patterns, odd/even numbers. Any additional practice your child would like to complete in math, IXL is available to them. All login information is found on the sheet I added to their homework duotang a few weeks ago.

Egg to Chick Program:

Our eggs are doing well. They are requiring a great deal of care over the weekends. They need to be checked on twice a day EVERY day just to ensure they are warm enough. I have started recruiting my own sons to help me check on them! LOL Next weekend should be our hatching day, Nov. 20. I'm sure the excitement in 2B will be high by next Monday!

Book Fair:

2B will be attending the Scholastic Book Fair this week. On Monday, November 14th, students will view the selection of books and then return on Wednesday, November 16th to purchase if interested.  Any child who wants to buy something, is asked to take money into school on Wednesday, Nov. 16.  Parents also have the option to purchase on-line.

Virtual Scholastic Book Fair Site

Christmas Families

West Royalty Elementary has always been very generous in supporting our "Christmas Family" campaign.  Any money donated goes to help families within our community who are struggling with financial responsibilities.  Donated funds have traditionally been used to purchase children's presents, clothes, grocery store gift cards, furnace fuel, etc. Students will be taking home "Christmas family" envelopes on Monday, November 14th.  If you'd like to donate, please place it inside the sealed envelope and ask your child to give it to me in the morning when they arrive.

If your family is struggling and you'd like to possibly be considered as a "Christmas Family" recipient, please reach out confidentially to our school counselor, Kathy Burt.

Hi Parents,

Time is certainly flying by! I am in the midst of finishing up my assessments and beginning report cards for my students. I am really looking forward to seeing you all at Parent Teacher Interviews at the end of this month. Online booking will be opened on November 8th for you to select a time to come for an interview.  https://wrelementary.schoolappointments.com/admin/

Curriculum:

Reading workshop: Students have done an amazing job of building their reading stamina at independent reading time. This group of children really enjoy reading and for many it is an activity of choice once their written work is completed. The amount of time a child can read is so important. Many have built up to 20 minutes of sustained reading. Let's keep it going!!

Writing Workshop: We are zooming in on details in our writing. Many students are beginning to add interesting details to their stories. I ask them to think about their audience. . .paint a picture in the readers' mind about what is happening in your story. Telling events bit by bit makes their writing come to life. I will be sharing a few of your child's writing pieces with you at interviews!

Note: I will be completing a 103 no-excuse word spelling quiz this week. I will supply this list of 103 words and have your child place it in their homework bag to practice. These are the words which they are expected to know how to spell correctly by the end of grade two.  I will be doing a preliminary assessment of those words next week, so that parents have an idea of which words they know and which words they need to continue working on. If your child works on an adapted word list ( 4 words per week) I will NOT be asking them to complete this assessment until next term.

Math: This week we are beginning story problems. I want to teach the class how to read a story problem to find out the missing piece.

This program that we are participating in is incredible! We have 28 eggs to care for over the next few weeks. The students are learning what develops inside each egg each day. We have journals we update daily, making observations and noting any changes we see. Monday will be Day 8 for our eggs. We will be " candling" them where we hold a flashlight to each egg to see the changes that are occurring inside. Please ask your child about this special project. They are excited to share their knowledge!

Book Fair:

The book fair is booked for November 10-18 for students and November 10-20 virtually for parents.  More information to come soon from our librarian, Mrs. Smith.

Remembrance Day:

Our class will be listening to several books, watching videos, and doing some artwork this week to recognize Remembrance Day on Nov. 11.

October 24, 2022

October 24-28, 2022

Hi Parents,

It has been another beautiful weekend. Hopefully you had a chance to get out and enjoy some family time!

Curriculum:

Reading workshop: This week's focus will be monitoring our own reading. If your child makes an error when they read aloud , praise them first ( You are such a great reader) and then ask " Did that make sense? Did that sound right?". We need to make children aware when something doesn't sound right or doesn't make sense. It's their job to fix it. We all make mistakes when reading. . . just stop and fix it or " self- correct". The more we model this, the better they will become at doing it on their own.

Writing Workshop: This week's focus will be about generating ideas. Writers always need to be thinking about events from their own lives that make good small moment stories. I encourage them to think of funny moments, places they have been, even things that have happened in our classroom. Please do the same at home. Say to your child" That would make a great story at school tomorrow".

Math: Students are continuing to work on counting forwards and backwards by 1's,2's,5's,10's- 100  We have introduced addition strategy " Doubles plus 1" strategy. If I know 6+6=12 then 6+7=13. We will be practicing odd/ even numbers, greater than and less than, and representing numbers with tallies, base ten blocks, ten frames, etc.

Egg to Chick Program:

Exciting news in 2B . . .We will be participating in the ‘Egg to Chick’ program, which is funded by Agriculture in the Classroom PEI.  This is a great opportunity for us to observe change, first-hand, as we bring the eggs through their life cycle from egg to chick.  We will be able to integrate this experience with our Science unit on life cycles/animal growth as well as our Social Studies unit on ‘change’.  The incubator has arrived and our eggs will be delivered to us on October 31st! I will keep you posted as we go through this program!!

School Pictures:

2B will have their photos taken on Tuesday, October 25th.

Breakfast Program:

Our breakfast program is up and running.  If students wish to go in the morning, they must go directly into the Multi-Purpose room when they get off the bus, as the program only runs from 8:05-8:15 before classes begin.

October 17-20, 2022

Hi Parents,

I hope you had a great weekend. The weather has been so nice to get outside. My family has been using every moment to continue with yard clean up , as many of you are too!

You may have heard that last week our class filled our Marble Jar!! As a reward, we have a new class pet . . . a beta fish named BUBBLES ! The kids absolutely love having him and have taken a big interest in caring for him. Let's hope Bubbles lives a long happy life in 2B!!

File Work :

Each Friday, I try to send home the past week's file work that your child worked on in class. Most sheets will be completed but occasionally a few things need to be finished. Please take a look through their work and support them to complete those few things remaining. You keep the work at home. It is a great way to stay informed of what skills we are working on through the week.

Curriculum:

Reading workshop: This week's focus will be building fluency when we read aloud. I have been modelling how we should " scoop" our words together to read in phrases. This takes a tremendous amount of practice for the students. Encourage them at home when they read their homework book to you. I explain to the class that our reading should sound like talking. . . it flows!

Writing Workshop: We will be discussing a variety of strategies for spelling unfamiliar words. The children are beginning to learn ways to attempt spelling challenging or tricky words without relying on an adult to spell for them. We use a word list and word wall for high frequency( common words) but the rest needs to be tackled independently. You will be amazed at how independent the children will become as we use these strategies every day.

Math: Students are continuing to work on different ways of representing numbers to 100 and counting in different ways( 1's,2's,5's,10's).  We are moving onto " Doubles plus 1" strategy. If I know 6+6=12 then 6+7=13. Here is a link to a couple of card games you could play at home to reinforce the math facts to 10 as well- https://www.thefirstgraderoundup.com/2018/11/primary-math-card-games.html

Bathroom Behavior:

We have a number of students in our hallway from the grade 1 and 2 classes who are making inappropriate choices while in the bathroom (e.g. yelling, peeking under stall doors, locking doors and then crawling out, throwing wet paper towels on the ceiling, etc.).  Teachers and administrators have talked to all of the classes about expected and appropriate bathroom behavior.  If you could also reinforce this at home, it would be much appreciated.

Battery Blitz:

We are super excited that West Royalty Elementary School will be participating in the Battery Blitz Contest this October in honor of Waste Reduction Week. Our School Mission is to recycle as many used batteries as we can by encouraging students, parents, staff, and community members to bring them into our school and dispose of them in the Call2Recycle collection boxes. The contest kicks off the week of October 3 and participating schools will have 4 weeks (contests end on November 1, 2022) to collect used batteries. The top 3 schools with the highest weight of batteries will win a cash prize ($3000 for first, $2000 for second, and $1000 for third). Two years ago we won the $2000 prize, and last year we won the $1000 prize. Let’s go West Royalty!

Hi Parents,

What a week we had! I hope your families are all doing well and getting through the aftermath of the hurricane. It has been so sad to see the devastation of Fiona but Islanders are strong and we will be ok. My neighborhood was hit hard with many fallen trees but kindness has been everywhere . . . friends helping clear debris, meals being made together and our kids helping each other. Hopefully that is what we will all remember when we look back on this!

I am looking forward to having the children back at school tomorrow.  I have missed them!  It will do us all well to get back to some sense of normal routine.  Many thanks to our custodial staff who worked extra hard to ensure that our school was repaired, cleaned, and safe for staff and students to return to the building.

Tomorrow is our scheduled technology time. Once I have everyone login to confirm passwords are correct and working properly, I will add their sheet of passwords into their homework folder. Please watch for that this week.  Your child will then be able to access everything from home( if necessary) and you will always have this important information in their folder.

Homework:

Thank you for helping your child with their homework.  One of the reasons we have homework Wednesday to Wednesday is to give families the freedom to complete homework on the weekend if the weeknights are too hectic.  The only ‘must-do’ on the weeknights is  reading.  Your child should read for approximately 10 minutes each night.  The books your child takes home are meant to be easy for them, and they shouldn’t be stopping to solve too many words.

I was really pleased with the students’ first attempt with the word choice activities in their homework scribbler.  Here are some ways you can support your child at home with their word study homework:

Curriculum:

Reading workshop: This week's focus will be building our reading stamina for independent reading. We are working our way up to 15 minutes. Each student has a reading bucket  filled with " just right" books for them. This is where they choose their homework book from. Students have a chance to read on their own each day. This daily practice is critical to strengthen their reading skills. Hopefully, Guided reading will also be up and running this week!

Writing Workshop: This week students will work to apply the strategies of bringing their stories to life by telling their stories bit by bit and including the character’s thoughts and feelings.  We are also going to look at a couple of mentor texts to notice what those authors are doing in their books.  Students will then be encouraged to try one or more of the craft moves we’ve noticed from the mentor authors.

Math: Students are continuing to work on different ways of representing numbers to 100 and counting in different ways( 1's,2's,5's,10's).  We are also continuing to review the mental math strategy of ‘doubles’ facts. I will send home a small Doubles booklet for you to keep at home to practice with your child.

Terry Fox Walk/Run:

Our Terry Fox Run/Walk will now be held on Tuesday, October 4. Students are asked to please bring in a donation of a toonie or more to support this cause. We are hoping to raise at least $1000. If every student brings in at least $2, we will definitely achieve this goal.

September 19-23, 2022

Hello Parents,

I  hope you are enjoying your weekend. . . . this beautiful weather is amazing!

Thank you for attending  our ‘Meet the Staff’ night on Tuesday. It was wonderful to meet many of you. If you were unable to attend and have any questions, please email me.

Homework:

We started our homework routine last Wednesday. The children seemed excited about taking home a book to read to you. Their books should be relatively easy as we get back into reading. This is to build their confidence and make it enjoyable!

We will have their first spelling quiz on Wednesday on the words from this past week’s homework.  Your child should complete 4 different word work activities from the blue choice board sheet in their folders. All spelling practice can be completed in their red scribblers.

A new homework sheet will go home this Wednesday, Sept. 21 , along with a new math game.  Your ziplock bag of math materials was sent home with students to use when playing the homework math games.  Please put this bag in a safe place so that the materials can be returned at the end of the school year.

Thank you for making sure your child's homework bag / green folder goes back and forth to school every day.

Reading:

In Reading Workshop, we have started discussing what independent reading should look like in Grade 2. In the beginning, we can only read on our own for a very brief period of time so we have to start to build our reading " stamina". This will allow us to read for a longer time. I will also be starting my Guided Reading groups next week.  During Guided Reading, I will meet with a small group of students to read a book together. This allows me an opportunity to see where my readers are in word solving / fluency and I can teach them strategies to strengthen their skills.

Writing:

In our Writing Workshop, we have started a unit called “Revving up the Writing Muscles”. This unit reviews some of the expectations from Grade one, as well as refreshes everyone's ideas of what writing time looks like. We are writing " small moment" stories where the students tell about something that happened to them .. . . A real life experience! These have been so much fun to read!

Math:

In Math, students are working on different ways of representing numbers to 100.  We are doing a lot of work with the 100s chart and practicing our counting in different ways ( 1's, 2's, 5's, 10's).

The breakfast program will soon be starting at our school.  However, we do need parent volunteers to assist with the running of the program.  If you are able to help out either in the morning or afternoon (between 2:00-2:30), please contact Audrey Llewellyn at aclewellyn@edu.pe.ca.  A criminal record check will need to be completed for all volunteers, but the school is able to provide a letter in order to get the check done for free.

Important Dates to Remember:

Have a terrific week!
