Management of homework materials is an important skill for students to learn. All students are given specific instructions each day when it is time to pack our homework, but I am often finding homework bags or books left behind at school. It is important that students bring their homework bag, and all of its contents, back and forth to school each day. Please have a conversation reinforcing this idea with your child, to help facilitate personal responsibility.

Hi families! Through conversations at parent-teacher interviews, there was a lot of interest in more math practice on top of the game being sent home. As a result, in addition to the game, there is also an addition practice sheet that can be completed and returned before next Wednesday. Also, IXL is always an option and encouraged a few times a week for continued practice of different math strategies.

Hi families!
I hope you all had a lovely Fall weekend - it is so wonderful to be able to continue enjoying the outdoors! Today was a great day in 1 / 2 Z. There is lots of learning and growing happening!
This week, I will be administering our class's first FUNdations assessment. This will give me important information about our strengths as a class, as well as areas I can focus on in FUNdations instruction. Students came home today with a Unit 2's newsletter and optional activities. Students will also begin bringing home "Trick Words" this week, and will continue to add more and more words to their ring. I encourage students to practice reading their Trick Words at home, to reinforce the learning we are doing at school. Thank you all so much for your continued support in homework!
Reminders
Battery Blitz is ongoing - please send used batteries in to be recycled. The winning class gets a prize.
Please ensure your child comes to school with all of the tools they need to succeed. A good night's sleep and breakfast go a long way. We are also dealing with a lot of students who are not bringing a water bottle to school. There are water bottle filling stations located throughout the school, but the school cannot provide water bottles. Please send one with your child.
LifeTouch School Pictures for Grade 1/2Z will be taken on October 26th.

Hi families,
It has been a busy start to the week in 1/2Z! There are so many fun things happening and students are beginning to get excited for Halloween. This week we are continuing to build our reading stamina as guiding reading happens, and we are settling into our writing routine with some opinion writing. We are also discussing growth mindset and the Power of Yet.
In Grade 1 math, we are continuing to practice our skip-counting. We are also working on representing numbers to 20 with some crafts and activities.
Reminders
This Friday is a Professional Development day for teachers. There will be no school for students.

Hi families,
I hope you all had a lovely Thanksgiving weekend! We had such a busy week in 1/2Z, and got into lots of fun Thanksgiving and Autumn-themed activities! This week, we will continue on with our Autumn-themed writing, and get into a couple of fun art projects. I will share pictures once we have them all displayed!
I have switched out homework books and sent home a new Homework Log for the week. Thanks so much for your participation and cooperation with homework. Our motto in 1/2Z is: read, read read! The more students practice their reading skills at both school and home, the bigger gains they will make. Please refer your child to their reading strategies bookmark when they come across a tricky word - we will continue to practice these strategies in Guided Reading as well.
Reminders
This Friday is a school-wide Pajama Day. If students choose to, they can wear their PJ's all day!

Hi everyone!
Well, that was certainly not the ending to September we expected! It was wonderful to see everyone's faces today, and relieving to know so many families have had their power restored. I hope none of you suffered too much damage from Hurricane Fiona!
Homework Beginning This Week
Today students will bring home their homework bag. In the homework bag, you will find a red folder that contains a newsletter regarding the homework expectations for 1/2Z. Students will also have a book and a homework log. On the homework log, you will be able to track the homework completed as well as use the communication column to make notes on your child's progress. Please note that I will be checking homework weekly, so time sensitive notes may be better sent in an email. Thanks so much for your support and cooperation!
Reminders
Please send utensils to school
Students need to bring a reusable water bottle with them each day
Please send headphones in for your child to use for Chromebook time
The P.D. day originally scheduled for this coming Friday, Oct. 7th, has been cancelled. It will be a regular instructional day.

Hi everyone!
It was great to put some faces to names at Meet the Teacher last week. Thanks to everyone who was able to attend! I have uploaded our slideshow on the "About 1 / 2 Z" page for anyone who couldn't make it.
This week is a busy one in 1/2Z! I have sent home a parent orientation letter to Fundations, our new literacy program. Grade 1 parents may be familiar with this program as students completed the first level in Kindergarten. For Grade 2 students it will be new.
Please send utensils to school
Our hot lunch program has started, and the office would like parents to be reminded that students must bring their own utensils to school. We do not have any extra to provide to students who order their lunch.

Hi everyone!
Thanks so much for such a great start to the school year. I am just loving getting to know each and every one of my little learners. They are such a sweet group!
These first few days have been lots of introductory activities as we settle into our class routines. We are focused on creating a classroom where every student feels included and welcome.
I have a few key reminders for this week as we set off into the new school year:
Meet the Teacher
Meet the teacher night will be held on Tuesday, September 13th. There will be two sessions, one from 6:00 to 6:20 and one from 6:30 to 6:50. This will be an opportunity to pop in and see our classroom and learn about our class schedule.
