Monday, June 19th

Hello everyone!

I can't believe we are into our last full week of school. It has been an incredible year, and there is still lots of fun in store.

Students had a super fun day on our field trip on Friday. We also released our butterflies last Monday! Everyone loved our butterfly project - such amazing learning happened while watching the caterpillars grow and become butterflies.

As we welcome spring, our playgrounds have become extremely muddy. I would encourage students to wear splash pants and rubber boots for the month of April, until the ground dries up.

Hi everyone!

Welcome to the last week of March! It is hard to believe we are soon moving into April. It was wonderful to meet with so many parents and guardians last week. Thank you so much to all who were able to attend. I am extremely proud of all of 1/2Z's accomplishments last term!

Movie Night in 1/2Z

Last week, 1/2Z started writing persuasive letters to Ms. MacLean and Ms. Cameron. They wrote to ask if we can have a pajama movie night in our classroom. We will be submitting our letters to the office on Tuesday. If our class succeeded in persuading our principals, we will be having this movie night on Friday, March 31st, from 6:00 to 8:00 pm. I will send out the results of our persuasion as soon as I hear back from the office - but save the date!

I hope everyone had a restful weekend! Holiday cheer and excitement is abundant in 1/2 Z. This is such a fun time of year.

This week in 1/2Z...

This week, there will not be any formal homework, although I do encourage reading practice whenever possible. I recognize and appreciate how busy households and families are this time of year! I will continue to send home homework books for practice, but the books will be familiar reads.  Students will continue to take their homework bags home each day. They have packed several books to read throughout the week. Only one book needs to be read each evening, if you have time.

Monday, November 28th

Hi everyone,

What a whirlwind of a week! Between raising chicks, parent-teacher conferences, and fitting in all of our regular curriculum, it was a very busy week here in 1/2Z. Thank you all so much for coming to meet with me to talk about your children. It is such a joy to discuss student achievements and set goals for the next term. It is so hard to believe that December begins this week.

This week in 1/2Z...

Grade 2 Math Note from Ms. Hutchings:

Hi families! Through conversations at parent-teacher interviews, there was a lot of interest in more math practice on top of the game being sent home. As a result, in addition to the game, there is also an addition practice sheet that can be completed and returned before next Wednesday. Also, IXL is always an option and encouraged a few times a week for continued practice of different math strategies.

Students need to review nightly these addition strategies. Grade 2 children, by now, are expected to recall them within 3 seconds.

Welcome to November!

It was a busy start to the week in 1/2Z. This week, we are going to begin our Small Moments Unit of Study in writing. We will continue working on our reading strategies and reading stamina. Monday, October 31st

Hi everyone,

It is hard to believe we are already at the end of October. The month of November is going to be an exciting one in 1 / 2 Z!

As you may have heard, 1 / 2 Z is participating in the Egg to Chick program, along with the other grade two and three classes at West Royalty. Our eggs will be arriving on Halloween, and they will be in our class until November 25th. Students will learn all about the growth and development of the chicks, and we will be completing a Science unit based around this experience. Lots of chick updates to come!

Since this week is only three days, with Halloween being one of those days, there will be no Homework Log sent home. Students will still take home a book to practice their reading each night, but there is no formal log or assigned math skill this week.

Hi families!

I hope you all had a lovely Fall weekend - it is so wonderful to be able to continue enjoying the outdoors! Today was a great day in 1 / 2 Z. There is lots of learning and growing happening!

This week, I will be administering our class's first FUNdations assessment. This will give me important information about our strengths as a class, as well as areas I can focus on in FUNdations instruction. Students came home today with a Unit 2's newsletter and optional activities. Students will also begin bringing home "Trick Words" this week, and will continue to add more and more words to their ring. I encourage students to practice reading their Trick Words at home, to reinforce the learning we are doing at school. Thank you all so much for your continued support in homework!

I hope you all had a lovely Thanksgiving weekend! We had such a busy week in 1/2Z, and got into lots of fun Thanksgiving and Autumn-themed activities! This week, we will continue on with our Autumn-themed writing, and get into a couple of fun art projects. I will share pictures once we have them all displayed!

I have switched out homework books and sent home a new Homework Log for the week. Thanks so much for your participation and cooperation with homework. Our motto in 1/2Z is: read, read read! The more students practice their reading skills at both school and home, the bigger gains they will make. Please refer your child to their reading strategies bookmark when they come across a tricky word - we will continue to practice these strategies in Guided Reading as well.
