Hi families!
The weather last week was sunny and hot at school! It looks like things will be a little cooler this week. Please keep in mind that the classrooms do get very warm this time of year, so it’s best if your child dresses in layers. I encourage outdoor play and lots of fresh air, but reading is important too! Reading outside is always fun too - see if they can find a new place each night to do their reading! Hi families!
We had beautiful weather last week to release our butterflies! We really loved this project and watching the life cycle of butterflies. With the warmer weather, it’s really important that your child brings a water bottle and hat to school every day.
Sunscreen: I encourage your child’s sunscreen to be applied in the morning, as it generally lasts through the school day. If you’d like to send sunscreen to school, your child can apply it before lunch recess. They need to be able to apply their sunscreen independently. Please don’t send any aerosol/spray sunscreen to school, it has strong scents and the residue makes the floors very slippery.

Hi families!
It was a very exciting week in the Grade 1 hallway as our butterflies began to emerge from their chrysalises! We will enjoy a couple more days with our butterfly friends before releasing them into nature.
This Week in 1A:
Phys. Ed - Monday, Wednesday, Friday
Music - Tuesday and Thursday
Library - Tuesday
Playground - Back Playground this week
Sight Words - R-controlled vowel review. Students will be spending more time reviewing how “bossy R” changes vowel sounds in words. We will also review all the trick/sight words we learned throughout the year, especially some trickier ones (want, were, what, where, there etc)
Homework: Your child will have 2-4 books for reading this week. They can also practice our sight words (reading and writing these words), skip counting (2s to 20, 5s and 10s to 100) and counting backward (especially decade transitions (40-39, 80-79 etc). Any extra with addition would also be helpful!
Fundations: We will continue working in Unit 11. In this unit, we are focusing on the syllable pattern vowel-consonant-e (which may also be referred to as “Magic e” or “Sneaky e”). Rules to remember:
the e at the end of the word is silent.
The first vowel in the word makes the long vowel sound.
Ex: make, hope, bike, cute
Math: We will continue on with subtraction and exploring the relationship between addition and subtraction. Students will keep practicing applying these operations to solve one-step story problems.
Writing: This week we will continue with our persuasive writing unit.

Hi families!
I apologize for the lack of weekly update last week - unfortunately I was sick the beginning of the week.
There has been lots of excitement in 1A as our caterpillars have cocooned themselves into their chrysalises! We are anxiously awaiting to see if any of them will hatch this week.
This Week in 1A:
Music - Monday, Wednesday, Friday
Phys. Ed - Tuesday and Thursday
Library - Monday
Playground - Front Playground this week
Sight Words - This week, we will spend more time with the spelling rule “vowel-consonant-e” AKA “Magic e/Sneaky e”. We are focusing on this in Fundations as well. Knowing this rule, will help the kids decode (solve new words) when they are reading new words that follow this spelling pattern. The kids will also try to apply this when they are writing. If they hear the vowel say it’s long vowel sound, it may follow this spelling rule.
Math: We’ve introduced fact families which is connecting part/part/whole using addition and subtraction. For example: using the numbers 3, 7 and 10 we can make the following facts: 3+7= 10, 7+3=10; 10-7=3 and 10-3=7. Also, we’ve been mixing addition and subtraction facts so the kids pay attention to the symbol and understand which operation they need to use. Story problem are also being used so the kids can apply the appropriate operation to solve problems.
Writing: This week we will continue with our persuasive writing unit.

It was so nice to meet with many of you and discuss your child’s progress. Report cards will be going home on Wednesday. Please let me know if you have any questions once you’ve had a chance to review them. I’m so proud of the children - they deserve to be celebrated for all their hard work this year!

The cost for the trip is $2 which will cover bussing to Orwell.
Our bus will be leaving the school at 8:45am and we will be returning around 2:00pm.
We will be spending some time outside, so please make sure your child is dressed appropriately for the weather - snowpants, hat, gloves/mitts and jacket.
Students will bring their own lunch (no microwave), snack and water bottle. Please remember there will be NO hot lunches on the day of the field trip!
Our day will consist of a variety of fun and interactive activities for the children! Depending on the weather, some of these activities may include: making bread and butter from scratch, seeing and interacting with the farm animals, making apple cider, a horse and sleigh ride, making snow candy, square dancing/yard games and sledding.

Hi families!
We had lots of fun celebrating the 100th day of school on Friday! We did stations again with all 5 classes and the grade one team was so impressed with how the kids responded to working with peers and teachers from all the other classes- they were respectful and great listeners! We (teachers) have been busy with assessments and report card writing the past couple of weeks and we are so proud of how much progress each child has made both academically and socially over the past 100 days in school. It really is incredible- big round of applause to all!

Hi families!
I hope everyone had a wonderful long weekend! Last week was lots of fun in Grade 1, with Valentine’s Day and Winter Wellness Day! On Valentine’s Day, students moved through stations set up in our hallway with the rest of the Grade 1 students. They had lots of fun making new friends and celebrating kindness! On Winter Wellness Day, students participated in many fun indoor winter activities as well as some extra play time outside in the afternoon.
During this short week, we will celebrate the 100th day of Grade 1! On Friday, everyone is invited to dress up like they are 100 years old. If your child would rather not do that (or if it's easier for parents) they're also welcome to wear some jammies that day! I am so proud of all of the learning students have done over the past 100 days. It will be a great day to celebrate their accomplishments!

Hi families!
I hope you enjoyed the beautiful weather this weekend! Last week, our class learned about Chinese (Lunar) New Year. The children had lots of questions and were very interested in learning more. We made a large dragon in the hallway out of our handprints and we created paper lanterns. We have so much fun ahead this week! We love to celebrate special occasions and integrate them into our curriculum. This week, we will have our valentine exchange and will participate in Winter Wellness Day.

Valentine’s Day
We will exchange valentines in our classroom on Wednesday (Valentine’s Day). I emailed out a class list last week, and I also sent home a paper copy in the homework bags. If your child is bringing any treats (lollipops, etc) with their valentines, please remember that everything must be nut free.
Winter Wellness Day
On Friday, we will participate in some winter wellness activities outside. It wouldn’t be a bad idea to send extra socks and mittens on that day, as well as a change of clothes in case they get wet. Winter Wellness Day is a government initiative that ensure that all students in the public school system participate in a minimum of 20 minutes of physical activity on this day (besides their regular Phys Ed classes).
Homework: Your child will have 4 books for reading this week. They can also practice our sight words (reading and writing these words), skip counting (2s to 20, 5s and 10s to 100) and addition with sums to 12.

Hi families!
I hope you all stayed safe and warm in the winter storm! We had lots of fun playing in the snow last week and we even got outside sledding on Friday. There were lots of smiles and it was a great way to wrap up another week in grade one! I’ve added some photos in the Our Classroom tab. Please visit the Monthly Learning Goals page to see what we're up to this month in grade one!
Reminders:
I’ve been noticing a few friends not having gloves last week. Please remember to send gloves so your child can enjoy playing in the snow.

Reading/Writing: We will continue working on our Non-Fiction Animal books this week and continue to explore fiction and non-fiction books.
Math: We are building a “tool box” of strategies we can use when adding. It’s our hope that by exposing students to different ways of thinking about addition, they will find the strategies that work best for them. It can also support them in thinking flexibly about addition.
Fundations: We are starting Unit 8 this week. Unit 8 is about 2 letter consonant blends. We learn to identity the vowel, and look for consonant blends before or after the vowel. A consonant blend is when 2 or more consonants go together quickly (for example - stop, trick)
Valentine's Day: We will be celebrating Valentine's Day on Wednesday, February 14th. We'll do some fun activities and we'll also be exchanging valentines in the classroom. We have 14 students. I'll email a list of our first names and send home a paper copy too.

Hi families!
The snow was certainly welcomed last week. The kids had lots of fun playing in it at recess! We enjoyed celebrating Famiy Literacy day on Friday and the grade one English classes got together for hallway book buddies. The kids got to choose a friend from another class and read in their classroom of choice. It was a huge hit and our grade 1 team is already planning another hallway buddy reading time! Check out some pictures of the kiddos who chose 1A as their reading spot under the "Our Classroom" tab.

Fundations: We will finish Unit 7 this week. We will be consolidating our learning of the -ng and -nk glued sounds through practice, as well as learning how to add suffix -s to a word with an -ng or -nk glued sound. Example: songs, banks
Groundhog Day: On Friday we will have some fun talking about the tradition of Groundhog Day which occurs every February 2nd. I wonder if an Early Spring will be predicted!

Hi families!
It was a cold and icy week which resulted in lots of indoor play time! The 1A kiddos really enjoyed our unit on “The Mitten” by Jan Brett. I am so impressed by the great writing everyone worked hard on! There were lots of great discussions about fiction books to be heard last week. This week we will extend our learning by beginning to compare and contrast fiction and non-fiction books. In math, we will dive deeper into understandings of equality and addition, before adding new addition strategies to our math toolboxes.
Reminders:
Please remember to send appropriate outdoor clothing. We go outside twice a day as long as it isn’t colder than -20. Extra mittens and socks are never a bad idea this time of year!
We get new homework books on Monday. If your child doesn't have their homework bag, I can’t give them new books. We need the books from home to circulate throughout the classroom. Please ensure your child has their homework bag every day!
Family Literacy Day - Friday, January 26, 2024
Friday January 26, we will be celebrating Family Literacy Day at Glen Stewart Primary. Ms. Amy, our school librarian, has some things planned for the students in and around the library. Our school also encourages parents to take a picture of their family celebrating literacy together and email a copy of the picture to our email account: GSPliteracy@gmail.com. The office would like to print the pictures and make a collage of all of the pictures of our families. Please have pictures submitted by Sunday, January 28th so we can get things organized.
*If students wish, they can come to school on Friday (January 26th) dressed as their favourite character from a book or movie.
*Also, if your child could take in a favorite book from home, we will have a read-a-thon time where they can share reading and looking at their books with one another in class.

Hi families!
We have had a wonderful start to December! It’s always an exciting time of year to be in a grade one classroom! It looks like we are going to get some snow tomorrow which will make things even more festive. Please ensure that your child has appropriate outdoor clothing for the weather. This week is concert week, so the excitement level will be very high! The children can’t wait to show you their performances on Wednesday.
Concert reminders:
Our class will perform on Wednesday, Dec. 6th at 1:10 and 6:00.
Doors will open at 12:45 for the afternoon concert and 5:30 for the evening concert.
If you have extra tickets that you will not be using, please send them back in your child’s homework bag tomorrow.
You must have a ticket to get into the concert. This is due to the large number of students in our school and fire regulations.
For the evening concert, students will go directly to their classrooms when they arrive (I’ll be there waiting) and you will head to the gym. When the show is over (it’s only 30 mins or so), you will come to the classroom to pick your child up.
Our class will be wearing Elf headbands. The children can wear whatever you/they want for the concert.
Breakfast with Santa
Our Home and School is hosting a Breakfast with Santa that will take place on Saturday, Dec. 9th. Tickets can be purchased through our online Hot Lunch website. Some tickets will also be available at the door.

Hi families!
We had a beautiful Remembrance Day ceremony on Friday. I was so proud of 1A for the respect they showed throughout the entire assembly. To the left you can see a photo of the Remembrance Day art project we completed. It will be a short week this week, with only two instructional days!
This week in 1A:

Homework: No books sent home this week. Please review sight words! It would be helpful for your child to practice counting forwards and backwards from numbers 0-20, and start at any number between 0-20 and 'count on'. The class is doing great with counting forward, but more practice is needed with counting backward. :)
Fundations: Continuing Unit 4 this week. The glued sound 'all' was recently introduced (sounds like /ol/). We will read and write words with all (ex: call, ball, fall). We will continue learning about bonus letters. If there is an f, l or s at the end of a one syllable word after a short vowel, we add a 'bonus' letter to double the consonant. We will learn how to read and write words with "bonus letters". We'll also learn that /z/ will sometimes be a bonus letter at the end of a one syllable word after a short vowel.
For example: hiss, fell, sniff, buzz

Hi Families!
We had such a fun time celebrating Halloween together! It's hard to believe we are in November! The weather is becoming quite chilly, so it's a good idea to keep a hat/mitts in your child's backpack and send a jacket every day. There are discussions every recess about what they need to wear as some are keen to wear sweaters or t-shirts. It would be helpful if you could discuss with your child what they should wear when we go outside!

Fundations: We just finished Unit 3 on Friday, and had our assessment today. This week, we will be starting Unit 4 which is all about bonus letters. We will learn that if there is an f, l or s at the end of a one syllable word after a short vowel, we add a 'bonus' letter to double the consonant. We will learn how to read and write words with "bonus letters". We'll also learn that /z/ will sometimes be a bonus letter at the end of a one syllable word after a short vowel.
For example: hiss, fell, sniff, buzz
Math: We will begin learning numbers to 50 and solidify our skip-counting by 2s. We will also learn how to count by 10s!
Art: Last week we did a cute directed drawing of an Autumn bird. This week, we will create a piece of art including poppies, to honour Remembrance Day.
Monthly Learning Goals: I will share our November/December learning goals next week, stay tuned!

Hi families!
We had a wonderful 5 day week in grade one! The children really enjoyed our Fall Walk to Cotton Park! We had a great time exploring nature and all of the fall changes. One of the highlights was definitely the walk through the wooded trail where we could see the Hillsborough Bridge and a cruise ship! I’m proud of the children for their excellent behaviour on the walk. We also had a very fun assembly with a presentation from Earth Rangers. The children even got to see some live animals! A card went home in their homework bags with more information on Earth Rangers.
