February Newsletter

Happy February, 3C Families!

This month will be short but busy!

In math, we are finishing up our unit on addition and subtraction of 3 digit numbers to 1000.  We will begin our measurement unit next week.  This is a fun one with lots of hands on activities as the students use nonstandard units of measurement and rulers to explore this concept.

In writing the students are working on nonfiction writing.  The students have finished an “All About Me” piece of writing and are now researching an animal and writing a nonfiction piece all about their chosen animal.  The students have been enjoying the research process and I am excited to read what they have learned.  We are relating our knowledge of writing nonfiction texts to reading nonfiction texts.  The students have been learning about the various text features and have been so excited to point them out in the different books they are reading. If your child is looking for something different to read in the evenings “National Geographic Kids” has many different articles.  It is on our class site under the Student Portal in Language Arts.  The students have been using this site a bit for their research so they should know how to navigate to it.

We are into our final unit in Social Studies and will hopefully finish it up this month.  We will then spend the rest of the year focusing on the last units of science.

As this month has Valentine’s Day and Pink Shirt Day, we are doing some more work around sharing kindness and showing empathy.  The student well-being team will be visiting our class on February 15th to do a presentation around this topic with them.

On Valentine’s Day, the students are invited to bring in valentine’s to exchange with their classmates.  I will send a list of the students’ names in an email. I have had a couple of 3C families sign up to send in treats.  The treats will be store bought, nut free, and kiwi free.  If you would prefer your child does not participate in eating the treats please let me know.

Parent Teacher Conferences are in early March but the online scheduler opens on February 23rd.  Please make sure that you sign up for a time that suits you.  An email should be sent to you all in the coming weeks with the link and information.

Dates to Remember:

February 14th - Valentine’s Day celebrations in our classroom

February 19th - Family Day: No school

February 23rd - Parent Teacher Conference Online Scheduler opens

February 28th - Pink Shirt Day: students are invited to wear pink shirts

Have a wonderful month!

January Newsletter

Happy New Year!  I hope you all had a chance to spend time with family and friends and find some time to relax over the holidays.  I am excited to hear all about it from the students!  I can't thank you enough for all of the thoughtful presents and treats that were sent in before the break.  You sure know how to make a teacher feel special!

This month we will be jumping into addition and subtraction of 3 digit numbers.  It is really important that students continue to work on their basic addition and subtraction facts to 20 at home.  This way they can focus on the process/steps for adding and subtracting these bigger numbers.  The students all have xtramath accounts (their login and information is on the card glued inside their homework duotangs).  This is a great and quick way for students to practice their facts independently if you wish.

We are moving into a nonfiction unit in reading and writing.  In this unit the students will learn about the various nonfiction text features and what they are used for/how they help the reader.  The students will be writing some nonfiction pieces of their own and incorporating these text features into their own writing.  This is a unit the students usually really enjoy!

Word Work words will start back up the first week back so be sure to check your child's homework bags for their weekly list words.

We finally have snow! Hopefully it will stick around for a little bit so the students get a chance to enjoy it on the playground.  Please make sure that your child has all of the appropriate clothing they need to stay warm and dry outside.  It's always a great idea to have extra mittens/gloves as these can get wet during the first recess.  Also having a change of clothes (especially socks) is nice to have in bags as well.

Dates to Remember:

January 4th - PD Day: No school

January 5th - PD Day: No school

January 8th - First day back to classes for students

January 11th - Mrs. Emily out for the day for PD.  Guest teacher will be with the class.

December Newsletter

Hi 3C Families!

It is going to be a busy and fun month! The students have been working so hard on their Christmas concert and are so excited to share it with you all.  They have been doing such a great job!

This month in writing we are focusing on punctuation.  The students are learning about the different types of punctuation and working on adding them properly into their writing.  We are doing some free writing, prompt writing, and writing about reading.  It is a nice change as they have been working on narrative/small moment writing for the past couple of months.

In math we are working on rounding numbers, estimating sums/differences, and 2 digit addition and subtraction.  We will move into 3 digit addition and subtraction in the new year.  Continued practice of the students' basic math facts to 20 and skip counting at home is really helpful to get these skills solid.

Spelling words will only be sent home for the first week in December (4th-8th).  We will continue to work on different principles in class but the students will not be quizzed at the end of the week. December can be a very busy time for families so if you can continue to do some reading and a practice some math a couple of times a week that would be great!

Ms. Sally will be finishing up her time with 3C and we will be very sad to see her go.  The students have all enjoyed having her in our room.  We hope she will be back to visit sometime!  Her last day with us will be December 14th.  We're wishing her all the best as she continues with her course work and then moves onto another preservice teacher placement in the the spring.

The 12 Days of Christmas for our class will start on Thursday, December 7th with a PJ day.  Students are invited to come dress in their comfy pjs and can bring one stuffy that fits in their backpack if they would like.  The students are also welcome to dress in holiday attire or their pjs on December 22nd.

Happy Holidays to you all!  I hope you get to enjoy time with your family over the break and I can't wait to hear all about it from the students in the new year. If the holidays are a difficult time for you and your family, please don't hesitate to reach out to the school and we will support you as best we can.

Dates to Remember:

December 6th - Christmas Concert (1pm & 7pm) Doors open at 6:30.

December 7th  - Snow date for Christmas Concert - PJ Day - Report Cards go home

December 14th - Ms. Sally's last day with 3C

December 22nd - Last Day of Classes 2023 - students can wear holiday sweaters or PJs

November Newsletter

Hi 3C families!

It has been so great to hear the students’ stories about Halloween! A huge thank you to parents who signed up and sent in pumpkins and treats for Halloween.  The children really enjoyed everything and had a fun day at Fall Frolic.

Our pre-service teacher from UPEI, Ms. Sally, has been with us for just over a week and the students are enjoying having her in our class. As her time in our room progresses she will be doing more activities and teaching various lessons to the class. She will be with us until December 14th.

This month in writing we are going to continue to work on personal narrative stories along with some other writing activities. Students are being encouraged to write several sentences on one topic and to add uppercase letters at the beginning of sentences and end punctuation. The students have been working on building their stamina as readers and choosing “just right” books that interest them. I have begun some reading assessments and hope to finish them up soon. Please continue to have your child read at home.

In math, we continue to practice counting by 1s, 2s, 5s, 10s, 25s, and 100s forward and backward. We will be adding counting by 3s and 4s this month. We are also working on time (hour and ½ hour) and elapsed time. We will be working on our addition and subtraction facts this month and talking about different strategies we can use to solve these quickly.

Parent Teacher Conferences are being held this month. Please make sure to sign up for a time when the online scheduler opens on November 12th. I’m looking forward to chatting with you all about your child’s progress.

Hi 3C Families!

It has been so lovely getting to know your children over these past few weeks. I can already tell I have a wonderful group of caring and fun students! If you have not already filled out the "Getting to Know Your Child" survery, please take a minute to fill it out.  I have loved reading all of the responses so far.  It is so helpful!

This month in math we will continue to work on our Number Sense outcomes.  The students will be working on counting forward and backward up to 1000 and skip counting.  We will also be comparing and ordering numbers.

In writing, the students will continue to write small moment stories.  We are talking about the things that great writers add to their writing to make it interesting and I am already seeing them try things like adding sound words, talking, and descriptive words.

We have been doing some work in Social Studies about the people of Prince Edward Island and Canada.  We will be continuing to learn about PEI in the coming month.

Other notes:

If you have signed up to send in plastic untensils for the class and you have not sent them in with your child yet, it would be great if they could be sent in soon.  I have had a few students looking for utensils.

Please send in a pair of headphones to be used with the Chrome Books and a clean sock or rag to use as a whiteboard eraser.  Thank you to all of you that have sent these things in already!

September Newsletter

Welcome to 3C!

Hi!  My name is Emily Farquharson and I will be your child’s teacher for the year. I am very excited and looking forward to working with each and every student in this class!  I just know that we are going to have a great school year together! This first month of school will be all about getting to know your child and getting them comfortable with our classroom routines and expectations.  As the students get more comfortable with our daily tasks we will really begin to dive into Grade 3.

We have lots of learning to do this year and I will do my best to update this site regularly to keep you up to date on what we have been doing in the classroom and what the week or month ahead will look like.  Though we may not start homework right away it is important for students to bring their Homework Folders back and forth to school each day.  This folder will have different notices from myself or the school or other important information you may need.  If you need to send in a note for any reason you can also send this along in the Homework Folder.  Once we do get started into doing daily homework I will be sending all of this information in this folder as well.  I will be checking these folders daily and it is important that you do the same.

Please note that the school is sending home information sheets that we require you to fill out.  Please return these to the school as quickly as possible so we can update all of the important information regarding your child(ren).

It is very important to me that the students feel like they have a safe and welcoming environment when they come to our classroom.  We will be spending lots of time together and it will be expected that we all treat each other with kindness and respect.  Students are always encouraged to try their best and to ask questions if they are having difficulty with any task.  I am here to support your child in any way that I can!

Please contact me at any time if you have any questions or concerns.  You can reach me by calling the school at 902-368-6855  or by emailing me at evfarquharson@edu.pe.ca (note that if I am teaching I will not be able to respond until I have a break and on days I have outdoor supervision this may not be until the end of the day).  Again, I am greatly looking forward to this school year.  I can’t wait to get to know all of the students in our class and to help make their school year a positive one!
