Hi Parents/Guardians,
This site will continue to be a work in progress throughout the year. I will add and delete as we go along. Please be sure to check the site often as I will provide updates about what we are doing in class. Any newsletters or updates will be added to the "Parent Portal" page and I will often send an email to everyone letting you know when it has been updated.
Please contact me with any questions or concerns! evfarquharson@edu.pe.ca
Welcome to 3C!
Hi! My name is Emily Farquharson and I will be your child’s teacher for the year. I am very excited and looking forward to working with each and every student in this class! I just know that we are going to have a great school year together! This first month of school will be all about getting to know your child and getting them comfortable with our classroom routines and expectations. As the students get more comfortable with our daily tasks we will really begin to dive into Grade 3.
We have lots of learning to do this year and I will do my best to update our site regularly to keep you up to date on what we have been doing in the classroom and what the month ahead will look like. Though we may not start homework right away it is important for students to bring their Homework Folders back and forth to school each day. This folder will have different notices from myself or the school or other important information you may need. If you need to send in a note for any reason you can also send this along in the Homework Folder. Once we do get started into doing daily homework I will be sending all of this information in this folder as well. I will be checking these folders daily and it is important that you do the same.
Please note that the school is sending home information sheets that we require you to fill out. Please return these to the school as quickly as possible so we can update all of the important information regarding your child(ren).
It is very important to me that the students feel like they have a safe and welcoming environment when they come to our classroom. We will be spending lots of time together and it will be expected that we all treat each other with kindness and respect. Students are always encouraged to try their best and to ask questions if they are having difficulty with any task. I am here to support your child in any way that I can!
Please contact me at any time if you have any questions or concerns. You can reach me by calling the school at 902-368-6855 or by emailing me at evfarquharson@edu.pe.ca (note that if I am teaching I will not be able to respond until I have a break and on days I have outdoor supervision this may not be until the end of the day). Again, I am greatly looking forward to this school year. I can’t wait to get to know all of the students in our class and to help make their school year a positive one!
Hi 3C Families,
September was such a wonderful month filled with getting to know each other and settling back into school routines. What an amazing group we have in 3C!
This month in math we will continue to work on our Number Sense Unit. The students have been working on representing numbers up to 1000 in a variety of ways. This month we will be counting forwards and backwards up to 1000 and skip counting by 2s, 5s, 10s, 25s, and 100s. The students will also be comparing and ordering numbers. Closer to the end of the month we will be working on addition and subtraction with missing numerals.
The students have begun to write "Small Moment" stories. We are working in on really zeroing in on a small story and stretching it out bit by bit. The students have started adding in some sound words and talking in their stories. We will continue to work on these personal narratives throughout October.
We have started Fundations! This first unit focuses on the various types of syllables. We also will be learning proper cursive letter formation for a number of letters. This has a number of students excited!
In health, we will continue to work on our unit on Relationship Choices (What makes a good friend? How do we show kindness and respect?) and self-regulation by considering the size of the problem. In Social Studies, we are working on "Place" with a focus on Prince Edward Island. The students are able to describe where our Island is located in Canada. We will be talking about the people of Prince Edward Island this month.
This month there will also be some talk about Thanksgiving and Halloween. It will be a busy one!
Dates to Remember:
Monday, Oct. 14th: Thanksgiving-no school
Friday, Nov. 1st: PD Day-no school
Looking forward to a great month!
Hello 3C Families!
It's hard to believe that we're into November already! With the weather getting colder, please ensure that your child is dressed appropriately each day. We head outside twice everyday for recess. Students should have jackets, boots, and splash pants for rainy days. Warm jackets, hats, gloves and splash pants or snow pants for colder days.
Parent-teacher conference scheduler will open on November 8th. The link will be posted on our school website. You will have until November 15 to book your conference time. Parent-teacher conferences will be in the afternoon/evening of November 21, and during the day on November 22. I look forward to meeting with you to discuss your child's progress.
This month in writing we will be wrapping up our small moment writing unit. Students have been working hard to tell their stories bit by bit using a storytellers voice.
We have completed Unit 1 in Fundations and have been working on Unit 2. This unit is focusing on suffixes.
In math we have been working on skip counting by 2s, 3s, 4s, 5s, 10s, 25s, and 100s. We have been skip counting forwards and backwards up to 1000. We have started working on mental math strategies such as doubles, doubles +1 and doubles +2 as well as making 10. We will continue to work on these strategies, and move on to addition and subtraction with missing numerals, followed by mental math strategies for adding and subtracting 2 digit numbers.
Ms. Ryan has been taking on some of the lessons each day. The students are enjoying learning from her. This month she will be working with them on their Science Unit on Invisible Forces. This is a fun one. I know the students will love all of the hands on activities!

Hi 3C Families!
It was so nice to chat with you all last week! I really appreciate all the support you are providing at home!
I can't believe that December is just around the corner, and it will be a busy one. The students have started working on their winter concert and those practices will increase over the next couple of weeks. They are going to be so excited to show you all of their hard work on concert day. More information on when students will need to arrive for the evening performance and on tickets will be sent home closer to the date. Ms. Dahn updates her site with any concert news, so it is important to take a look regularly. https://sites.google.com/cloud.edu.pe.ca/westwoodmusicroom/home
Every year in 3C I do a 12 Days Countdown. Each day we do something fun in our room. It ranges from extra buddy reading time to crafts and games. I will send home a calendar next week with your child. Most of these activities are things we do in the classroom and don't require anything from home. There are only a couple of days that the students may need to dress up or bring something. I have written those dates below. I will provide the students with hot chocolate on one of the days and a treat (chips or popcorn) for our movie day. I will always try to give you notice when food is being shared in the classroom. Please let me know if you would prefer if your child did not participate. Students are also welcome to bring an alternative treat for themselves on movie day if they do not want what is being offered (as always this must be nut and kiwi free).
This month we are really focusing on punctuation in our writing while giving the students a little more freedom when it comes to choosing their genre and topic. In math, we are working on mental math, estimating, and we are getting into addition and subtraction. We will be working our way up to 3-digit numbers. In Social Studies and Health, we will be looking at various ways families celebrate holidays and their traditions. We continue to talk about friendships, respect, and kindness.
This Friday, will be Mrs. Donna's last day with 3C. She has been such a wonderful support to in our classroom and we are sure to miss her. We are very excited to have Ms. Kim will us for the remainder of the year. She has been so happy to meet the students over the last few weeks and has quickly realized what a lovely group we have!
Wild Child is coming to our class to do two presentations with us. These sessions will be teaching the students about nature and their environment. They will be given hands-on experience outside. Please make sure your child is dressed appropriately. My understanding is that we will be going outside rain or shine during these sessions. We have one session in December and one in February.
Dates to Remember:
Dec. 4th - Wild Child presentation (dress to be outside for an extended period of time)
Dec. 6th - PJ Day in 3C (students may bring one stuffie that fits in their school bag)
Dec. 9th - Report Cards go home
Dec. 18th - Winter Concert (1:00pm & 7:00pm)
Dec. 16th - Hot Chocolate will be provided
Dec. 19th - Storm date for the concert - Ms. Ryan's last day with 3C
Dec. 20th - Movie Day & treat provided - Last Day of School before winter break
I understand that the holiday season can sometimes be a difficult time for families, if you or your child are struggling, please reach out to the school. We are here to help as best we can.
I hope I am not forgetting to include anything. I know this is a lot of information!
Hi 3C Families!
I hope you are all staying warm and enjoying some of the snow we have been getting throughout the month of January. I know that February is going to fly by!
We have wrapped up our unit on addition and subtraction to 1000. The students have worked hard on this one and there are a lot of components and things they need to remember. We will be revisiting the concepts covered throughout the remainder of the year to make sure these learnings are solid. We are beginning our unit on multiplication and division this month. This is a fun unit and the students are always excited because it is something new. In Grade 3 we focus a lot on the understanding of what multiplication and division are and we use many strategies to solve the problems. Please note that the students will not be expected to memorize or have their facts on a quick recall. Instead they will work on demonstrating their understanding.
In writing we are learning about nonfiction text features and how to write a nonfiction text. We started this unit by writing “All About Me” nonfiction books and the students are presently researching an animal of their choosing and are creating slideshows with this information. This also leads to strengthening our ability to read nonfiction texts and use all of the text features to gain important information.
We have Thumbody coming to our class on Thursday of this week and next week. This is a program offered only to Grade 3 students by the Canadian Mental Health Association that focuses on celebrating the fact that we are all unique and special. They also talk a bit about feelings and some strategies we can use to help us when we are sad, angry, etc. This ties into our health outcomes as well.
I sent an email last week with the class list of names for Valentine’s.The students are invited to bring in valentines to pass out to their classmates on February 14th. I know that some valentines come with small treats such as suckers or smarties. If this is the case for your child, please make sure that the treat is nut and kiwi free in order to keep everyone safe. As we have students with other food sensitivities, the students will take these treats home and can enjoy them there. I do have some suckers that I have shared with the class earlier in the year that I will let them enjoy on the day.
Dates to Remember:
February 6th - Thumbody
February 13th - Thumbody
February 14th - Valentine’s Day
February 17th - Islander Day: No School
February 21st - Parent Teacher Conference Scheduler opens
February 25th - Wild Child (second and final session)
February 26th - Pink Shirt Day
February 28th - Parent Teacher Conference Scheduler closes
I hope I haven’t forgotten anything! Looking forward to another great month!
Hi 3C Families,
This month in writing the students are working on persuasive texts. The students already seem to be excited about this unit. Each student will write a number of persuasive pieces trying to convince someone to agree with their point of view. I am excited to see what they come up with!
In math, we have started our unit on measurement and perimeter. We will be doing a lot of review work this month as well. The students will complete a school-based math assessment on April 8th. The students have an hour and a half to complete the assessment, and it is based only on what we have covered so far. I have chatted with the students about this and have assured them that there is nothing to be worried about. The results of the assessment are only used to guide my teaching for the remainder of the year and help us to focus on the areas where we need more practice. It will be very important that students are in attendance for that day. If they miss the assessment we will have to find an alternate time for them to write it and that would mean that the student would be missing regular instruction time.
We will be completing our science unit on materials and structures in the next couple of weeks. Please send in your child's supplies for their tower project this week. I am hoping we will do our build day in the afternoon of April 8th. This will make a fun afternoon after completing their math assessment in the morning.
We have started to get some Spring like weather and with that comes a messy playground. Please be sure to send along splash pants and an extra change of clothes with your child.
Dates to Remember:
April 2nd - Materials for science project due
April 4th - Dress as a Teacher Day: fundraiser for Easter Seals
April 8th - Math assessment
April 11th - PD Day: no school
April 16th - Spring photos: you must send a note if you want your child's photo taken
April 18th - Good Friday: no school
April 21st - Easter Monday: no school
