KB had such a wonderful time exploring our new dramatic play area! Our little doctors were busy weighing their dollies and teddy bears, measuring how tall they were, and exploring all the different medical instruments. The bandages were definitely a favourite! It was so lovely to see everyone using their imaginations as they cared for their special patients.
Last week, we focused on our social-emotional learning goal of “How to Apologize Like a Fox.” We learned about the importance of giving a sincere apology and will continue to practise this skill throughout the month. We also discussed how to appropriately accept an apology by saying “Thank you” rather than “It’s alright.” We are building our understanding of how our words can help us show kindness, take responsibility, and care for one another! We will continue this all month!

Fundations: We are learning the letters /c/ and /o/. Please review the letter name, keyword, sound, and formation with your child if you can. We first introduce the short vowel sound and will talk about long voewl sounds in the winter.
Literacy: We will continue to learn about using shapes, proper colours, and now we will be adding a setting to our stories.
Trick Words: /the/
Numeracy: Our focus is on the number 5—representing it with tallies, pictures, parts, symbols, and ten frames.
Pictures: I sent home cards from the photographer (Everest Solutions). You can scan the QR code or enter the online code to view your child’s photos. The deadline to order photos with free shipping will be Thursday October 22nd.

KB had such a wonderful week together! One of the highlights was definitely the Teddy Bear Clinic, put on by the nursing students from UPEI. The children absolutely loved the experience, and it inspired us to transform our dramatic play area into our very own clinic for this week!
Dramatic play provides so many opportunities for meaningful learning. As the children take on different roles, they are developing communication and language skills, building relationships, problem-solving, collaborating with one another, and making connections to the world around them.
I can’t wait to see how the children explore the new materials, what roles they choose to take on, and, most importantly, all of the spontaneous learning that will unfold through their play. I have a feeling our clinic is going to be a very busy place! 🧸🩺

Literacy: We enjoyed learning about Mat Man last week and will continue to use these shapes to create different things. We will also be talking about using real life colours in our drawings to help our readers understand our pictures.

Special Helper of the Day
Special Helper of the Day
This week we’ll be starting our Special Helper of the Day routine (please check the calendar sent home for your child’s day). Each day, one student will take on important classroom jobs and enjoy a little extra responsibility (and privilege!)—like going first, passing out papers, or delivering notes to the office.
Best of all, our helpers get to bring one item for Show & Tell. This is always a class favourite and a wonderful way to build speaking and listening skills. To help your child feel prepared, please take a few minutes at home to practice sharing and answering “who, what, when, where, why” questions about their item. If your child feels a little nervous, please reassure them—I’ll be right beside them supporting the process.

This week we’ll also take part in our bus evacuation practice. Students will learn how to ride safely and what to do in case of an emergency.

On Tuesday, September 29th, we’ll recognize Orange Shirt Day by learning about how all children matter. To show our support, students are invited to wear an orange shirt—or something close to orange if that’s easier. We’ll also make something in class to add to our outfits, so no one will miss out.

On Thursday, October 1st, nursing students will host a Teddy Bear Clinic for all kindergarten classes. Each child is invited to bring one teddy bear (or small stuffed animal) to be “checked up” as the nursing students learn about child development.

Literacy: We ran out of time to introduce Mat Man so I will do that this week. Last we was all about using shapes to create pictures!
Trick Words: We’ll introduce our first high-frequency word: see. Trick words can’t be sounded out, so we practice memorizing them.
Numeracy: Our focus is on the number 3—representing it with tallies, pictures, parts, symbols, and ten frames.
Social-Emotional Learning: We’ll practice strategies for dealing with disappointment. It’s okay to feel sad when things don’t go your way, but we’ll explore helpful strategies like five-finger breathing, “squeezing the oranges,” or asking for a hug.

Wow, what a great week we’ve had in KB! Our routines are really starting to come together, and the kids are becoming more and more independent each day. It’s been so exciting to see them packing their own bags, taking care of their belongings, and even opening up their lunch packages all on their own. Way to go, KB!
A big thank you to those who were able to make it to Meet the Teacher Night—it was so lovely to put faces to the names I hear every day. If you weren’t able to join us, that’s okay, I look forward to meeting you soon! One of the thing I forgot to share was how much I love hearing about what’s happening in your family’s life—whether it’s a wedding, a special celebration, a big achievement, or even a tough moment that your little one may need support with. These little glimpses help me make stronger connections with the kids and build the caring, family-like culture we’re trying to achieve in KB.
Fundations: Last week, KB received a very special delivery—our Fundations program materials! Inside, we discovered Mama Echo- a snowy owl, and her little one, Baby Echo. Together, they are helping us learn how to be active listeners and how to “echo” or repeat after the teacher. This week, a sheet will be sent home so you can become familiar with the language and key components of the program. We are excited to begin this new learning adventure! Please use the duatang provided to help your child follow the proper formation for the letters introduce. Reminder that we are working on lower case letters first.
Numeracy: We will be working on the number 2 this week. We will learn how to represent the number in various ways (tally marks, symbols, pictures, 2 parts, 10 frames). We did number 1 last week :)
Literacy: learning all about "mat man" and how to use shapes to draw people!
Social Emotional Learning: We will be focusing on the zones of regulations (red, green, yellow, and blue). It's okay to feel all of the emotions. It is important to feel them and move on (don't get stuck being mad, sad, silly, ect).
Terry Fox Run: On Friday, we will walk/run in honor of Terry Fox. In Kindergarten, we keep this conversation light! We will briefly speak about how Terry Fox is a Canadian hero who raised money for people who were sick. We continue his journey so we can help as many people feel well as we can! You can make a direct donation to this link (at the top of the post) or if your family is able to send in a small donation.

Wow, what a wonderful start to our school year! We’ve had such a fun introduction to what school life is all about, and I am proud of how quickly KB has been picking up our routines. It’s amazing to see their excitement and eagerness to learn shining through already. Way to go, KB. We are going to have a fantastic year together!
Last week we learned about our classroom routines and expectations! We like to refer to the choices we make as green choices (acceptable/ expected/ kind choices) and red choices (unacceptable / not expected / unkind choice). It is adapted from a program called "The Zones of Regulation". Online you can find an abundance of information about this program if you are interested in learning more!
We also practiced our first fire drill last week! We have done our own drill as a class and they rocked it. We will do one more this week and the students will have plenty of notice and reassurance (incase your little one feels uneasy).
Our first unit in Social Studies is "I Am Unique". We will be learning about what makes us all special and unique. We will be talking about birthdays and how we got our names. I will be sending home a sheet for you to fill out telling the class the story of how your child got their name and then we will be sharing these stories with each other. We all love hearing how their names were chosen and how important their names mean to them and you!
Please remember to send back the forms that were sent home to you on the first day as soon as you get them filled out! And thank you to everyone who has already sent them back!
Milk Program: I also just wanted to remind you that all kindergarten classes will be receiving milk for 3 weeks (white milk only). You can place your order on the Hot Lunch site (you will not be charged for white milk).
