We had a fantastic field trip to Cotton Park last Wednesday! Our morning was filled with lots of exercise and we enjoyed the fresh air and nice weather. We made patterns using items in nature, listened to a story, enjoyed a walk through the trail in the woods, did a Spring scavenger hunt, did imaginative play in the Wild Child area, played field games and games with the large parachute. I was really proud of the kids for displaying respect, listening attentively to directions, and for getting along well with one another.
Our butterflies began to emerge on Friday! We have fruit in their nets so they can eat once they are ready. We will have them for the week and will release them some day next week.
We have been working through the Kids in the Know program. The kids understand the importance of safety rules, are aware of safety practices and how to make responsible choices.
We have our final field trip this Thursday to Camp Triumph. If you have not signed and returned your child’s permission slip yet, please do so by Wednesday, June 10th. $17 payment can be made by cash or on the hot lunch program. Please make sure your child comes to school wearing comfortable walking shoes and appropriate clothing that day. The forecasted weather looks really nice! Please check the letter that went home last week with specifics for the day. They should have a water bottle, snack and lunch. Please apply sunscreen in the morning before school, and send it with your child on the trip. Thanks!

This past week we kicked off caring for and observing our caterpillars. They have already more than doubled in size and each of them was lovingly given a name by the children. We were sure to clean out the caterpillar’s cups so that they have lots of room to eat and grow before they enter the pupa stage. The children also made their first entry in their Butterfly Observation Journals to record what the changes they have already seen in their caterpillars.
We will be doing a walking field trip to Cotton Park on Wednesday, June 3 (Rain Date: Thursday, June 4) so that we can enjoy the beautiful spring weather. A permission slip to be going home this week!
REMINDER: If students require sunscreen we ask that it be applied at home in the morning if possible, and then students can re-apply before lunchtime recess if needed. Please do not send spray sunscreen (the fumes are strong and it makes the floor slippery). Also, just a reminder that teachers cannot apply sunscreen, so the students should be able to do so on their own if they are bringing it to school. Thanks for your cooperation!

Hi Families!
The excitement with the chicks last week was absolutely magical! We were sad to say goodbye to them, but I’m so glad we got to enjoy the experience together. Our classroom will be a lot quieter this week without their chirps. However, we are now going to be doing another project! We have received caterpillars. Over the coming weeks we will watch as they grow and change. We will watch them transition from the larval stage (caterpillar) to the pupal stage (chrysalis). Then we will see them emerge as butterflies! Each child has a Butterfly Observation Journal, which they will write in every few days about what they are observing/thinking/feeling. This is another exciting project for the students and ties in well with our science curriculum.
We will be doing a walking field trip to Cotton Park soon so that we can enjoy the beautiful spring weather. Keep your eyes peeled for a permission slip to be going home this week! Our end of year field trip will be to Camp Triumph this year! We went there with our classes last year and had so much fun! We will do rock climbing, mini golf, archery, water games and more! Stay tuned for more information to come.
With warmer days ahead, some students have started to bring sunscreen to school. We ask that sunscreen be applied at home in the morning if possible, and then students can re-apply before lunchtime recess if needed. Caterpillar to Butterfly Program: We like to keep things busy in grade one! :) We have received our caterpillars and will be watching them transform into a chrysalis and eventually into beautiful Painted Lady Butterflies! This is another wonderful project that the children always enjoy and it fits in nicely with our Science unit on the Characteristics and Needs of Living Things.
Fundations: This week we will finish week 3 of Unit 11 and will complete our unit 11 check in. In Unit 11, students have learned about a new syllable type, vowel-consonant-e.
We will also be starting Unit 12 where students will learn to read and write multisyllabic words. They will also practice adding -s, -ed, and -ing suffixes to multisyllabic words. Hi Families!
We had another amazing week in grade one! We kicked off a new writing focus, Opinion Writing, learning about the difference between facts and opinions. The children then got to write about which playground at our school is their favourite and they are working to include three reasons why. We will continue this focus and also continue writing in our Chick Journals, which have documented their observations and understanding of taking care of our eggs/chicks.
The class used their subtraction skills to think through and make predictions about how many of our eggs they think will hatch. Then the children created cute art pieces showcasing the number of chicks they think we will have.
The “Cool Kids Care Club” are planning their last fundraiser of the year; a COOL treat!
We will have an ice cream sandwich sale with all our proceeds going to the QEH Big Day of Giving event. We will raise money to help purchase life saving equipment for our Charlottetown hospital.
Here is how you can help: You can purchase your ice cream sandwich for $2 (gluten & dairy free options available) from Monday May 11th – Wednesday May 13th from your classroom teacher.
WE WILL NOT BE ACCEPTING SALES AFTER WEDNESDAY MAY 13th.
Ice cream will be delivered on Friday, May 15th.

Words of the week- Review of words with r-controlled vowels - ar, or, er, ir, ur. (Ex: car, horn, her, bird, burn)
Highlights for this week:
Egg to Chick Program: Our eggs are in ‘lockdown mode’ and we have two chicks that are hatched! There are also several more that have pipped. The chicks will continue to hatch tonight and tomorrow. Once chicks have hatched and their feathers have dried we transfer them from the incubator to our very own classroom pen. Very exciting! See pictures here!
RCMP and dog visit: Tuesday morning 9:40.
Chick Visit: Wednesday, May 13th, pop in between 3:00-4:00 to see our baby chicks. Please refer to my email on Friday.
Monthly learning goals: Click HERE to see May Learning goals.
Fundations: This week we will work through week 3 of Unit 11. In Unit 11, students will learn about a new syllable type, vowel-consonant-e. This is a concept that they have been introduced to (we often call it “magic e”), and they will now get three weeks to practice it and extend their learning in Fundations. With “vowel-consonant-e”, the “e” at the end of the word is silent, but it changes the sound of the vowel in the word to the long vowel sound. For example: If we add an “e” to the word “hop”, it becomes “hope”. Students will learn the keywords and practice the long vowel sounds for each vowel.
Reading Homework: Your child will have 3 practice books along with Unit 11 Week 2 Fundations fluency sheet. Thanks for sending back your child’s books. Please send back any you may have at home.
Dates to Remember

Hi families!
We candled all/most of our eggs last week. We did get to see some movement in the eggs, eyes, air sac, and blood vessels. It can be a bit stressful candling the eggs in a small, dark room with 15 kids, haha, but the kids handled it really well! Despite their excitement, they tried their best to be patient and to stay back a distance to ensure the safety of our eggs.
We enjoyed the Easter Seals tour visit last week. Rowan is an impressive dancer and I saw lots of smiles on the kids faces as they watched Rowan’s dance moves. I was very impressed with the kids’ behavior during this visit. They were a terrific audience and listened with respect.

Words of the week- Compound words: afternoon, anyway, anyone, sometimes
Highlights for this week:
Egg to Chick Program: We are in for the final week of chick rearing this week. We won’t be candling the eggs anymore as they are now taking up too much space within the egg to see any movement. We will continue Chick Checks, and on Wednedsday, the incubator will be in ‘lock down mode’ which means it can no longer be opened. We are hoping we will get to see some chicks hatch on Monday, May 11th!
Fundations: This week we will work through week 2 of Unit 11. In Unit 11, students will learn about a new syllable type, vowel-consonant-e. This is a concept that they have been introduced to (we often call it “magic e”), and they will now get three weeks to practice it and extend their learning in Fundations. Hi families!
We had a great first week with our chick eggs! Each day we have two friends who get to do “Chick Checks” in the morning, at snack, at lunch, and at the end of the day. On a clipboard and sheet, they record the temperature and humidity of the incubator. The humidity has to be in the range of 45-55 degrees, and if it isn’t, we need to add water inside the incubator. The kids are taking this job very seriously. They are learning a lot and having fun at the same time! On Monday, we plan to ‘candle’ our eggs which is when you look at the eggs in a dark room with a flashlight to see the development inside the egg. This is really cool!
We also enjoyed recognizing Earth day last week and we did Art on Wednesday where the kids made Earth on a template using q-tips to dot on blue and green paint. They turned out really nice!

Easter Seals Tour: The Easter Seals Ambassador and their tour will come visit our school on Wednesday, April 29th.
Fundations
We finished up Unit 10 last week. The kids continue to do their best in each unit. There are a couple of things we will continue to work on as we move in to unit 11 (remembering to tap base words before we add the suffix to ensure we have the blend at the end of the baseword).
This week we will work through week 1 of Unit 11. In Unit 11, students will learn about a new syllable type, vowel-consonant-e. This is a concept that they have been introduced to (we often call it “magic e”), and they will now get three weeks to practice it and extend their learning in Fundations. Hi families!
It was a fun-filled full week in Grade 1! Check out our “Our Classoom” page for some pictures from The Music Man’s fun performance on Thursday. We loved looking through our Egg to Chick kits and getting our incubators all set up for our eggs, which are due to arrive tomorrow. It is a very exciting time in Grade 1!
Looking ahead to this week, there are still some cooler temperatures in the forecast. We are all looking forward to the warmer weather, but many of our morning recesses are still quite chilly. If you could please make sure your child is coming to school in seasonally appropriate clothing it would be greatly appreciated!

Highlights for this week:
Fundations: This week we will be continuing Unit 10 of Fundations. In Unit 10 we will be working on closed syllables with five sounds. These are words that usually have a blend (two consonants each with their own sound) at the beginning of the word and a blend at the end of the word. The word “s l u m p” is an example. The sl is a blend and the mp is a blend.
We will be adding the suffixes s, ed and ing to these five sound words as well. Students need to remember to spell the baseword first, then add the suffix ending,
We will also introduce keywords and sounds for vowel teams: oa, oe, ow, ou, oo, ue, ew, au and aw. We are introducing these vowel teams to help the students read words with them in it. Words with vowel teams are open syllable words because the first vowel is a long vowel sound, not short. The students will learn spelling rules for these vowel teams in Grade 2.
Reading Homework: Your child will not have any practice books this week as it is Book Inventory time. Please send any books back that you may have at home. Your child does have their Unit 10 Week 2 Fundations fluency sheet in their homework bags for practice, as well as another Reading Sheet for practice that will be sent home on Monday.

Hi Families!
I hope you all had a lovely long weekend. 1A kicked off April by starting a Non-Fiction Reading Workshop. The children are learning various strategies to intentionally make their way through non-fiction texts and think about all that they are learning. We also started a new non-fiction writing project where each student chose an animal to write about. In Math, 1A continued to work on addition, extending their learning to numbers with sums up to 20. The children learned and practiced various strategies to help them with these larger numbers and that will support their understanding as we move into subtraction.
We have another short week ahead, as there is no school on Friday, April 10.
