March 11th-15th:
Hi families!
Thank you so much for your cooperation with the re-scheduling of Parent Teacher Interviews due to the storm.
It was so nice to meet with many of you and discuss your child’s progress. Report cards will be going home on Wednesday. Please let me know if you have any questions once you’ve had a chance to review them. I’m so proud of the children - they deserve to be celebrated for all their hard work this year!
Field trip to Orwell Corner
Our field trip is on Monday, March 13th.
The cost for the trip is $2 which will cover bussing to Orwell.
If you have not yet returned your child’s permission slip, they will not be able to come on the field trip. Also, many children did not bring in the $2, so please send that in as well. Thanks!
Our bus will be leaving the school at 8:45am and we will be returning around 2:00pm. Please make sure that your child is not late getting dropped off on that day, as we will be loading the buses and getting ready to go by 8:45.
We will be spending some time outside, so please make sure your child is dressed appropriately for the weather - snowpants, hat, gloves/mitts and jacket.
Students will bring their own lunch (no microwave), snack and water bottle. Please remember there will be NO hot lunches on the day of the field trip!
Our day will consist of a variety of fun and interactive activities for the children! Depending on the weather, some of these activities may include: making bread and butter from scratch, seeing and interacting with the farm animals, making apple cider, a horse and sleigh ride, making snow candy, square dancing/yard games and sledding.

February 26th-March 1st:
Hi families!
We had lots of fun celebrating the 100th day of school on Friday! We did stations again with all 5 classes and the grade one team was so impressed with how the kids responded to working with peers and teachers from all the other classes- they were respectful and great listeners! We (teachers) have been busy with assessments and report card writing the past couple of weeks and we are so proud of how much progress each child has made both academically and socially over the past 100 days in school. It really is incredible- big round of applause to all!
Here's what's happening in grade one this week:
Music- Tuesday and Thursday
Phys.Ed - Monday, Wednesday and Friday
Playground - Back Playground this week
Sight Words - each, between, three, sleep This week we will be focusing on "Vowel teams". Knowing these letter patterns will help the children decode new words with vowel teams in them. Rule: first vowel says its' long vowel sound, the other vowel doesn't make a sound.
Homework: Your child will have 4 books for reading this week. They can also practice our sight words (reading and writing these words), skip counting (2s to 20, 5s and 10s to 100) and counting backward (especially between decades; I'm noticing this is a challenge).
Pink Shirt day: We will celebrate on Wednesday, February 28th. If possible, wear pink anything to promote kindness, friendship and inclusiveness.

February 12th-16th
Hi families!
I hope you enjoyed the beautiful weather this weekend! Last week, our class learned about Chinese (Lunar) New Year. The children had lots of questions and were very interested in learning more. We made a large dragon in the hallway out of our handprints and we created paper lanterns.
We have so much fun ahead this week! We love to celebrate special occasions and integrate them into our curriculum. This week, we will have our valentine exchange and will participate in Winter Wellness Day.
Valentine’s Day:
We will exchange valentines in our classroom on Wednesday (Valentine’s Day). I emailed out a class list last week, and I also sent home a paper copy in the homework bags. If your child is bringing any treats (lollipops, etc) with their valentines, please remember that everything must be nut free.
Winter Wellness Day:
On Friday, we will participate in some winter wellness activities outside. It wouldn’t be a bad idea to send extra socks and mittens on that day, as well as a change of clothes in case they get wet. Winter Wellness Day is a government initiative that ensure that all students in the public school system participate in a minimum of 20 minutes of physical activity on this day (besides their regular Phys Ed classes).
Here's what's happening in grade one this week:
Music - Monday and Wednesday
Phys.Ed - Tuesday & Thursday
Library - Thursday (Bring back any books you may have at home)
Playground - Back Playground this week
Sight Words - This week we will continue to work on the sight words from last week since the storm caused us to only have two days of school. We will keep practicing the words: could, would, should, some.
Homework: Your child will have 4 books for reading this week. They can also practice our sight words (reading and writing these words), skip counting (2s to 20, 5s and 10s to 100) and addition with sums to 12.

February 5th - 9th
Hi families!
I hope you’re all safe and warm in this winter storm! We had lots of fun playing in the snow last week and we even got to sneak in an extra recess. There were lots of smiles and it was a great way to wrap up another week in grade one!
Reminders:
Snowpants, hat, gloves/mitts every day! Gloves get quite wet at recess and socks get wet from walking in the hallway, so packing extra gloves and socks can be very helpful!
spoons, forks and water bottles
Here's what's happening in grade one this week:
Phys. Ed - Tuesday and Thursday
Music - Wednesday and Friday
Playground - Front Playground this week
Sight Words - could, would, should, some
Homework: Your child will have 4 books for reading this week. They can also practice our sight words (reading and writing these words) skip counting and addition with sums to 12.
Reading/Writing: We will continue working on our Non-Fiction Animal books this week and continue to explore fiction and non-fiction books.
Math: We are building a “tool box” of strategies we can use when adding. It’s our hope that by exposing students to different ways of thinking about addition, they will find the strategies that work best for them. It can also support them in thinking flexibly about addition. Last week was all about counting on and this week we'll take about doubles and doubles plus one.
Fundations: We started unit 8 last week. Unit 8 is about 2 letter consonant blends. We learn to identity the vowel, and look for consonant blends before or after the vowel. A consonant blend is when 2 or more consonants go together quickly (for example - stop, trick)
Valentines day: We will be celebrating Valentine's Day on Wednesday, February 14th. We'll do some fun activities and we'll also be exchanging valentines in the classroom. We have 15 students. I'll email a list of our first names!

Wednesday, February 14th - Valentine's day celebration
Wednesday, February 21st - 100th day of school celebration
Monday, February 19th - Statutory Holiday (no school)

Friday- Monday, March 22-28 - March Break (no school)
Friday, March 29 - Statutory Holiday (no School)
Monday, April 1st - Statutory Holiday (no School)
Have a great week!
Hi families!
It was a cold and icy week which resulted in lots of indoor play time! The 1C kiddos really enjoyed our unit on Penguins. I am so impressed by the great writing everyone worked hard on! There were lots of great discussions about non-fiction books. This week we will extend our learning by beginning to write non-fiction books. In math, we will dive deeper into understandings of equality and addition and adding the "counting on" strategy to our math toolboxes.
Reminders:
Please remember to send appropriate outdoor clothing. We go outside twice a day as long as it isn’t colder than -20. Extra mittens and socks are never a bad idea this time of year!
We get new homework books on Wednesdays If your child doesn't have their homework bag, I can’t give them new books. We need the books from home to circulate throughout the classroom. Please ensure your child has their homework bag every day!
Family Literacy Day - Friday, January 26, 2024
Friday January 26, we will be celebrating Family Literacy Day at Glen Stewart Primary. Ms. Amy, our school librarian, has some things planned for the students in and around the library. Our school also encourages parents to take a picture of their family celebrating literacy together and email a copy of the picture to our email account: GSPliteracy@gmail.com. The office would like to print the pictures and make a collage of all of the pictures of our families. Please have pictures submitted by Sunday, January 28th so we can get things organized.
*If students wish, they can come to school on Friday (January 26th) dressed as their favourite character from a book or movie.
*Also, if your child could take in a favorite book from home, we will have a read-a-thon time where they can share reading and looking at their books with one another in class.

January 8-26TH
January is a busy month in grade one. We reviewed routines and expectations, sight words, reading and writing strategies and counting in a variety of ways. It's time to move on learning new strategies for reading and writing. Homework is VERY important because it gives your child an opportunity to practice skills and sight words.
Here’s what is happening with our learning in January:
Reading: January’s unit is Non-fiction reading. Non-fiction Reading and writing go hand in hand. We read about topics, collect facts and then we can write non-fiction books.
Writing: Our unit is Non-Fiction writing! We will include facts from books, youtube videos and actual events that have happened in real life. The purpose for writing non-fiction is to “teach” or explain a real-life topic to the reader.
Our Non-fiction learning: We will focus on Penguins for the next couple of weeks. After that, they will write about what they want to "teach" us!
Math: We will review part part whole, skip counting (2s-20, 5s and 10s to 100) and numbers to 50. This month we will take what we learned and start adding numbers to 12. Students will focus on what equal means and learn new vocabulary around addition.
Fundations: We will start Unit 7 this month.
Unit 7- more glued sounds, or welded sounds (groups of letters where the individual sound of each letter cannot be clearly heard). “NG” and “NK” are two examples of glued sounds: ang, ing, ong, ung, ank, ink, onk, and unk.
Sight words for the month:
Her, after, over, other
saw, were, away
I’m, can’t, don’t, I’ll
Our, out, about, around,

Hi Families!
We have had a wonderful start to December! It’s always an exciting time of year to be in a grade one classroom! It looks like we are going to get some snow today which will make things even more festive. Please ensure that your child has appropriate outdoor clothing for the weather. This week is concert week, so the excitement level will be very high! The children can’t wait to show you their performances on Wednesday.
Concert reminders:
Our class will perform on Wednesday, Dec. 6th at 1:10 and 6:00.
Doors will open at 12:45 for the afternoon concert and 5:30 for the evening concert.
If you have extra tickets that you will not be using, please send them back in your child’s homework bag tomorrow.
You must have a ticket to get into the concert. This is due to the large number of students in our school and fire regulations.
For the evening concert, students will go directly to their classrooms when they arrive (I’ll be there waiting) and you will head to the gym. When the show is over (it’s only 30 mins or so), you will come to the classroom to pick your child up.
Our class will be wearing penguin headbands. The children can wear whatever you/they want for the concert.
Breakfast with Santa
Our Home and School is hosting a Breakfast with Santa that will take place on Saturday, Dec. 9th. Tickets can be purchased through our online Hot Lunch website. Some tickets will also be available at the door.

It has been a challenge getting the books back on Fridays and then our supply of books is limited. Also, I'm going to focus on decodable “books” and not the traditional books. It’s important for us to practice the reading skills that we’re learning.
What does this mean to you?? I’m hoping things will be easier and you get to see your child decode books! It’s pretty cool! :)

The class is doing great with counting forward, but more practice is needed with counting backward. :)
Fundations: Continuing Unit 4 this week. The glued sound 'all' was recently introduced (sounds like /ol/). We will read and write words with all (ex: call, ball, fall). We will continue learning about bonus letters. If there is an f, l or s at the end of a one syllable word after a short vowel, we add a 'bonus' letter to double the consonant. We will learn how to read and write words with "bonus letters". We'll also learn that /z/ will sometimes be a bonus letter at the end of a one syllable word after a short vowel.
For example: hiss, fell, sniff, buzz
Math: We will be learning numbers to 30 and begin skip counting by 2s to 20 and 10s to 100 over the next couple of weeks!

Hi Families!
We had such a fun time celebrating halloween together! It's hard to believe we are in November! The weather is becoming quite chilly, so it's a good idea to keep a hat/mitts in your child's backpack and send a jacket every day. There are discussions every recess about what they need to wear as some are keen to wear sweaters or t-shirts. It would be helpful if you could discuss with your child what they should wear when we go outside!

Update- October 30th-Nov 3rd
Hi families!
Things are moving quickly in Grade One and I’m very impressed with everyone’s personal progress. Our first term is almost over so that means…assessments for each student. I’ll be sending a quick email (within two weeks) letting you know if your child is meeting or not expectations for grade one in reading, writing and math. The report cards are very different from Kindergarten and I don’t want any surprises for you. We will have an opportunity to discuss any concerns at the Parent Teacher Interviews November 23rd and 24th.

Halloween: Students should wear their Halloween costumes to school Tuesday!! We will be doing a costume parade in our grade one hallway, and will have some fun Halloween themed activities throughout the day! No masks or pretend weapons are allowed at school. Also, teachers will not be applying face paint or make-up, so students will have to do that at home beforehand. Thanks for your cooperation! Hi families!
We had a wonderful 5 day week in grade one! The children really enjoyed our Fall Walk to Cotton Park! We had a great time exploring nature and all of the fall changes. One of the highlights was definitely the walk through the wooded trail where we could see the Hillsborough Bridge and a cruise ship! I’m proud of the children for their excellent behaviour on the walk. We also had a very fun assembly with a presentation from Earth Rangers. The children even got to see some live animals! A card went home in their homework bags with more information on Earth Rangers.
A reminder that there is no school on Friday of this week.

It is always helpful for parents to review the weekly sight words at home as well.
Homework: Read each night (Mon-Wed) and review sight words! It would be helpful for your child to practice counting forwards and backwards from numbers 0-20, and start at any number between 0-20 and 'count on'.
School Photos: Picture proofs were sent home last week. Please check for them in the homework bags if you didn’t see them already!
Fundations: We completed Unit 2 last week. Some children will continue to practice the skills from that unit with Ms.McGuigan in small groups. We started Unit 3 and sheets went home for homework and information. In this unit, the children learn digraphs (wh, ch, sh, th, ck).
Halloween: Looking ahead to next week, students will be allowed to wear their Halloween costumes at school for part of the day (On Halloween Day). We look forward to a spooky day together in grade one! :) Also, our class will be having a PAJAMA DAY the day after Halloween (Nov. 1st)!
